PS2 Shooters that are 480p

Post by New Age of Aces »

I know the PS2 does not have very many games that are progresive scan but there are some out there.

SNK Playmore has been getting there act together and alot of they're newer ports are progresive, MOTW, Kof neowave and Last Blade 1-2 most likely will be too. I have not picked up Twinkle Star Sprites: La Petite Princesse so I don't know if that is or not.

Are any import PS2 shooters out right now that run in 480p?

My current import PS2 collection.

R-type Final >480i
Gradius V >480i
ESPGaluda >480i
DMC 1-3 >480i
MGS 2-3 >480i
Ace Combat 4-5 >480i
Shin Contra >480i
Naruto Narultimate Hero 1-2 >480i
Jojo's Bizzare Adventure >480i
Energy Airforce >480i only
Energy Airforce: Aimstrike>480i
Gran Turismo 3 >480i
ZOE >480i
Anubis ZOE >480i

Mark Of The Wolves >480p
Soul Caliber 2 >480p
Gran Turismo 4 >480p/1080i=wtf
Guilty Gear XX >480p

<prays> I hope that RAIDEN III will run in 480p.

then again TAITO is involved.

Well, TAITO is capable in doing real good. :) TAITO PS2 version of Shikigami no Shiro 2 even got 525p mode. :D

This is just a matter of how much efforts they want to spend on the port. :o

If I remember correctly, TAITO have just done a X-type board port (GWG right) to PS2 early this year. So don't worry, Raiden III would be just as good as that. :D

A Progressive Scan is an improved scanning format for television systems. Where a standard television uses an interlacing format (alternating lines 60 times a second, creating a full image 30 times a second) higher market televisions and digital television systems use progressive scanning in which the television scans all the lines on the television in succession, and does a full screen 60 times a second. The result is a doubling of the frame rate and drastically improved picture quality.

480p is the same as 525p. That is, the player converts the 480 interlaced into progressive through deinterlacing and possibly filtering. However, the analog signal is 525 lines progressive.

How bad of a port was GWG????

Or to put it in other terms: VGA...(high-res 31kHz RGB) with the proper equipment.

For PS2 you will need the Sony Linux VGA cable with the console set to output RGB instead of Component. Hardly worth tracking down the cable though, since so few games worth playing are supporting 480p mode.

Is that what they call in Europe

100 Hz tv's then?
normal tv's are 50 hz and more expensive models have 100 hz. They claim it's better for your eyes. Or so they say.
what differences do you see then? with prgressive scan 480p?
What's the difference between my DC Guilty Gear X and the 480p GGXX.
Resolution is the same right? so what you are saying is that with GGXX 480p mode the image is sent 120 times a second, but the framerate of the game is still 60 FPS.

*confused with all this new high tech stuff that has been here forever allready*

Talking about HDTV's I get told that in Europe few actually own one of these sets. In States? In Japan? friends, relatives?

No. the 100hz systems display the same interlaced signal as a 50hz display. However updating at 100hz (essentially repainting the image) reduces visible flicker to most users. The system connected up still outputs the 50hz interlaced image (i.e. 25 full frames per second).

Less visible flicker, possibly a sharper image. flicker is particularly noticable in interlaced modes when reading text. the 100hz models aim to reduce flicker cheaply via the route of refreshing the image.

No, both run at 60fps, however one will output 60 half frames (even lines, odd lines, even, odd etc etc, essentially totalling 30 whole frames), whilst the outher outputs 60 whole frames per second, it will probably look sharper and smoother.

You're right it's been here forever - all your computer equipment outputs a progressive signal, TVs have traditionally used interlaced because, well, I guess it's much cheaper. Especially to broadcast.

Heh. Playing Marvel vs. Capcom 2 over at UD's place on a 50" samsung using VGA certainly was a sight to see. The chunky lo res 2D sprites clash horribly with the gorgeous background graphics... Giga Wing 2 certainly was nice though and I would love to see how Guilty Gear would look. :)

I just picked up a new copy of Shikigami no Shiro II from a local Import shop. Very sweet game and looks amazing in progresive scan.

Too bad I can't tate my TV

Also picked up Vampire: Darkstalkers Collection which did not say on the case that it had a progresive scan mode but it does.
