PVM scart questions

Post by Deca »

So I've been roaming around the net for months on and off, reading up where I can, and I just can't get stuff sorted well enough to commit to spending money on anything. I'm really sick of looking at Garegga via composite, so I'm hoping I can just get some basic questions answered and be good to go. I'm not really savvy to the tech side of things at all, I just like playing my games and want them to look nice :(

I was looking at the PVM scart adapter on retrogamingcables.co.uk, and it's offered in both European and Japanese versions. Most of the Saturn scart cables I see on ebay don't list whether they are EU or JP, so I'm not sure which I should get. Also I'm not entirely clear on whether the version is specific to the cable or the PVM itself. (If it's incredibly easy/inexpensive to make this adapter myself, I'd really appreciate some information regarding that.)

Beyond that, I'm not sure what cable to pick up. I was under the impression scart carried audio, but I've seen cables with RCA leads coming off of them for audio.

Japanese RGB cables are rare and hardly available on ebay. So, basically everything you see is EURO Scart, unless it explicitely states that it's japanese.

Scart carries stereo audio, but not all monitors have speakers, so RCAs breakouts are usually used to route the audio signal someplace else.

it's not that hard to build. I just bought femal scart lead, checked the pinouts to my consoles, and soldered to a DB25.

Each console pinout has the R,G,B,CSync,GND,+5v. It's just a matter of finding where they all share these connections since sometimes you'll have several different grounds and +5V connections. I never kept a pinout unfortunately.

Is there any reason a BNC adapter would be any more desirable? Is either one really going to have much practical utility beyond a PVM?

Well first thing to suggest is that you get your pvm first, if you haven't yet? - Sounds like you have but just checking.

Some have different rgb setups. I think a few even had a scart...

That being said; I believe rgbs via 4 bnc connectors was the most common solution. Simply because scart only came along relatively late in the day for the euro zone.

Back in the day BNC connections were common and straight forward ways to connect [and lock in] specific lines. The scart cable has lots of pins designed for various functions; however for your purposes the adapter simply takes 4 of them - the r,g,b,s for the picture. By comparision other connectors can be brittle, easily dislodged and hard to troubleshoot [think working in a big studio etc].

As mentioned an audio break out if also useful to to then pipe into your pvm[if possible]/stereo/headphones/speakers.

You can readily get hold of BNC <-> standard phono plug adapters for each plug... probably for cents/pence - meaning you can always use this to quite easily connect the rgbs signal to nearly any equipment that wants an rgbs signal - recording equipment/scalers/arcade monitor etc.

Personally for my various setups I use this little device to save me the labour/mess of chopping up a scart cable. Not sure how easy to find an rgbs version is elsewhere [beware not the same as some other 4 output scart adapters which basically connect different pins]:

note with the above type adapter, you'd want a female<->female adapter and you'd need to break out the audio some way yourself...

Thanks for the info! Yeah I've had my PVM for a while now, it has the BNC rgb inputs and the Computer pin input.

For the time being I'm only planning to have the Saturn connected to it. For the sake of convenience I'm thinking the way to go is one of those scart->pvm Computer input adapters and a Saturn cable with the audio breakouts, unless I'm overlooking something.

Which particular PVM do you have (model number)? If you have RGB inputs on both BNCs and a DSub, the dsub input is likely only for digital RGB, and not analog.

Ahh... ok. I have the PVM-2030... effectively the same video monitor. The RGB input on these is the DB25F connector. If you're only going to be using it for the Saturn, you might as well get a Saturn RGB cable for the PVM. PM me if you'd like me to build you one. :)

I use this for my SuperGun and Consoles; works like a charm.
