Ocean Commander - DS?
I recently picked up a copy PS2 Shmup Ocean Commander, I've been looking for the DS version for years and have never even seen the cover let alone found a copy.
There were quite a few articles about the game around 2008.
Can anyone please confirm if this game exists?

Re: Ocean Commander - DS?
Lol- I had the opposite problem. I couldn't find the PS2 version anywhere but got hold of the DS version which is for sure real. I see it's being ported to the Wii now as well.
What do you think of it? IIRC it I found it to be astonishingly shallow, dull and simplistic but I havn't looked at it for years and maybe I missed something

Woah thanks for the confirmation, you're the first person I've spoken to that's actually got a copy!! Any chance of a photo please you'd make my day!mjclark wrote:Lol- I had the opposite problem. Yep the game had a US only Wii port, the PS2 version is ok but I can see how the game mechanics would suit the Wii and the DS. The tageting system and ship movement work quite poorly on the PS2 - these are mapped to the analogue sticks.
The PS2 PAL port only got an Italian release so it's quite rare.

Re: Ocean Commander - DS?
It incarnated here on DS as Underwater Attack

Thanks boss this was the connection I was missing, it was renamed Underwater Attack in the US!! You've solved a bit of a puzzler for me, scored a copy for £6!!mjclark wrote:It incarnated here on DS as Underwater Attack

I can confirm the existence of an UK-Version for PS2. In this Video at 2:57 i'm holding it in my own hands:Gmintyfresh wrote:mjclark wrote:The PS2 PAL port only got an Italian release so it's quite rare.

And here is a photo which shows the back of the cover with the story in english language:
I think the UK version is rarer then the italian version....
Re: Ocean Commander - DS?
amazing! where did you find it ? I was once told by Phoenix games that the UK version did not hit stores, but some might have distributed to members of the press as review samples. Would be interesting to see if the UK version is a silver colored CD as well. According to Sony such a thing should not exist (silver = DVD, blue = CD), but I see yours is sealed and you will probably keep it this way.
quite an understatement you might say...I think the UK version is rarer then the italian version....

Stunning, I think you've got something very rare there - of interest to shmup collectors and also to Phoenix completists!armalyte wrote:I can confirm the existence of an UK-Version for PS2. Could you please answer a quick question? Does it have the same product code as the Italian version - SLES55047? Thank You

Re: Ocean Commander - DS?
Sorry but i think it's not possible to check the code without unsealing it... And actually i do not want to open it.Gmintyfresh wrote:Could you please answer a quick question? Does it have the same product code as the Italian version - SLES55047? Thank You

The product code is on the spine, the Italian version's code is clearly visible in the photos, for example.armalyte wrote:Sorry but i think it's not possible to check the code without unsealing it... No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.

My copy has some sort of anti-theft alarms (i'm sorry, but i don't how they called correct in english language) on the back. That indicates that it was officially sold by a store, right?Fudoh wrote:amazing! where did you find it ? I found it at ebay.co.uk some months ago and never saw another one.

This would be known as an "anti-theft sticker" in the USA...a typical thin piece of electronic circuitry disguised as a typical white colored sticker & if passed a certain & noticeble anti-theft barrier checkpoint setup, the alarms go off. These anti-theft stickers are place inside the DVD & Blu-Ray disc packaging, indeed, at the manufacturing plant/factory. In some department stores, they use what's known as plains-clothes security (folks dressed up like an average customer but used to chase down/pursue shoplifters if they're caught in the act in person or on the store's CC camera system. Some kleptomaniacs have been known to get into some heated fistfights/physical altercations with store security (especially if dealing with more than one shoplifter or a small theft ring). Whatever force necessary it takes to bring down the bad guys/gals (especially with them gangbangers).
Some brazen punks use stolen anti-theft devices to turn "off" such security tags placed on said merchandise to try to defeat the store's anti-theft barrier/system in place but they can't outwit the store's CC camera system. The store's many internal and hidden pinhole-based CC cameras see everything and don't lie...perfect for crooks to be convicted of theft if caught. Not to mention for the USA market, many merchandise items are sealed with some heavy duty blister-packaging plastic clamshells to deter theft but with enough strength, it can be overcome/ripped off in a flash (especially if using an utility blade cutter device). Many big ticket/expensive items are kept behind locked doors/locked glass shelving nowdays. It wasn't like that back in the early 1980s though. Times have changed since then.
Not to mention, some stores used to place video games within arm's reach on retail shelving during the Great Video Game Crash of 1983-84...nowdays, such games are enclosed in those anti-theft plastic outer ring shells that require a good pair scissors to cut them off (like in the self-service video game department at Costco).
Ocean Commander/Underwater Attack was never released in the USA for the PS2 console platform though. I bought such a copy of Ocean Commander for the USA region Wii console.

Thanks very much, still amazed that this has surfaced - it's created quite a stir with one of my mates that collects Phoenix games.armalyte wrote:Oh, ok...... left is the italian, right is UK:

Re: Ocean Commander - DS?
Wow! That's a game I never heard before. I have tried it for few minutes and it doesn't look bad. However, I see that it has poor review scores:

http://www.gamefaqs.com/ds/951990-underwater-attack
Is it because it's very simplistic and unimpressive even for a DS game?

Re: Ocean Commander - DS?
It's certainly better on the DS than the PS2 but the stylus gets in the way of your line of sight sometimes!! The GBA could have handled this game easily so it really does give you an indication of how it stands up graphically!!Vetus wrote:Wow! That's a game I never heard before. I tried the DS version for a few minutes but it was kinda boring at the beginning. And just like you said the stylus gets in the way of my line of sight often. Should I give it a second chance? Which version is the best: PC or Wii? And why the heck was the PS2 version released by Phoenix Games?

Re: Ocean Commander - DS?
Personally I'm not sure if it is giving another go! I definitely think the DS version is the most fun but the game is so samey and average in my opinion.Vetus wrote:I tried the DS version for a few minutes but it was kinda boring at the beginning. Not awful but not great either, I'd rather play tons of other shooters.
