How big is your backlog?

With all the good games soon to be released, I just took a peek at all the games sitting here that I still need to beat:

Holy crap I got careless. I'm gonna focus on all this stuff now and forget about buying more games. By the time I'm done with them, the games I want will either be dirt cheap or I won't want them anymore. But I need to deal with this pile in my hands.

I presume most gamers have some sort of backlog in their hands too. Is your situation as bad as mine?

I usually wait for games to drop to bargin price before I buy them, so buying too many games and having a backlog is the norm for me. But since I joined here ive mostly been playing doujin and emulation while I still buy the occational AAA PC game. With steam sales, humble indie bundie etc and buying a 360 and picking up the best exclusives my backlog has reached epic proportions.

At a rough guess ild put my backlog at around 60-80 games

And thats not even counting all the roms and doujin games on my HD. I must be insane

I'm with TVR on this, I've been waiting for the price to drop on a few games before I get them. So, I don't have anything that I haven't played. I'm slowly going through Loco Roco at the moment, and my friend has my copy of Portal 2 that I would like to play through again. The game I really want is Child of Eden, and I'm sure there may be a couple more I could find cheap at the store (is Dantes Inferno $5 yet?) I might sport the cost and get Rage new since I just scored a second job today and can justify the purchase.
Bad on you for buying too much stuff without playing it, give some of it to the needy children!
Of course I could always consider some of the games I have from over the years that I say I'll play again as some kind of backlog, but I try and make good and play a couple each year.
edit - I have yet to find the Williamson collection for the 360 in the wild yet, I would really like a copy of that as well.

I'm pretty up to date with the games I buy. Only major backlog is the US titles that are region locked.

I started a list of games I want to complete last week and stopped when I reached 108. And that's not counting certain genres like shooters, fighters, and RPGs.

Finishing Bayonetta has been on my backlog for freaking ever. It's like my personal gamer-side DNF. I tend to start games when I'm kinda burnt out on shmups, and then when I'm 25% through them, I return to shmups and totally forget about them.

At least with arcade games you don't get the guilt. I haven't really gotten proficient at SFIV or MvC3, but somehow that's ok. I feel a sting whenever I notice the continual expansion of XBLIG games I try, get impressed with, play for a few hours and never touch again.

If I listed every game that I would eventually like to play, the list would stretch into infinity. Of the games I actually own, though, I have very little backlog. I've completed most of my games - I tend to purchase a game, play it until I get absolutely sick of it, then move on to the next one. I also periodically revisit older games to see if I can do better at them (particularly games that I put down for whatever reason). The Advance Wars series is a personal favorite; I come back to it every couple years and I never get tired of it, just burnt out for a time.

Darius Gaiden, DonPachi, and Crimzon Clover are on the list right now.

While my backlog is big, Im kinda buying games for the future as well, Just incase the industry goes in some direction that im not intrested.

But with whats coming out atm and is lined up for TGS, games seem to be getting better not worse. Im not talking about the industry as a whole rather than what intrests me.

EDIT what has me worried though is that much of my backlog is digital format on steam and probably soon to be Xbla

My backlog is EASILY several hundred titles (several generally meaning 3-5, so 300-500 games) In fact I still have SNES games in my backlog that I bought when they were still available new...Genesis too...

i've went through my collection and boxed up anything where there is zero/limited chance of me playing that game again.

These will be sold/shipped to aki for selling etc. Arcade boards, retro stuff, new stuff.

My aim is to cull the collection from around 3800 to around 500 - i simply don't have the time: wife, kid, my more creative hobbies and career are all taking up more and more time so it's better i sell the backlog on to people who actually have the time to enjoy them.

Not a biggie really - i just don't care any more. Priorities have shifted drastically in the last 3-4 years.

Stand out that i bought and was excited for yet haven't finished is Child Of Eden - that's borderline criminal.

I don't have a backlog, I play one 'big' console game at a time and finish it, sell it on and then move onto the next.

Years ago I used to have 3 things at once going on, and never used to finish any games. Plus I don't waste money buying titles new at launch prices if 'I have a backlog' and they are just going to sit on a shelf for months, to the point where they are 1/4 the price.

I just operate under the assumption that there is a shitload of games I would like to play, and I will probably never get around to playing all of the games that I own. After I finish a game, I usually just browse my collection for something that sounds appealing - there's no prioritized list involved.

When I was young I had plenty of time to play games, but lacked the money to afford all of the games I wanted.

Now that I'm old, I can afford to buy (most) of the games I want, but I don't have the time to get to them due to a career, house, girlfriend, social life, etc etc.

I've got a couple of hundred in my backlog as well. I rarely buy things new, though, and am always on the look out for good deals. If it's cheap as shit and you know you're going to play it at some point, why not. I'm the type of person who doesn't really go outside anyway, so I consider it kind of an investment for the long run when I'm decrepit and all of my friends and family are dead.

Backlogs are evil! NEVER DO THAT! It will frustrate you and burn you out...
I always compare it to my warhammer/warhammer 40k miniatures. These take a shitload of time to paint until you have a decent little army. My rule is very simple:

I am only allowed to buy a new miniature/box when i have fully painted the last one.

Only get what you can handle, devote yourself only to that and finish it. That doesn't mean that you cannot diversify a little bit. I build up 2 armies at the same time so i can decide whether to paint one of the first amry or the other army. While i am assembling/ painting i image what i will get next and how cool the new miniature will be. This ensures that i don't have 4861 boxed miniatures laying around in my house that start to give you the feeling that you won't paint them anyways because it is too much. And you remain all excited about what you will get next a little bit like christmas. Same behaviour goes for videogames/ shmups. Big part of the frustration from such lists arises from the thought that "after this game you have to play that first before you play that" because you bought it like 3 months ago and haven't even touched it... theses little stingy thoughts.

Oh please. Just because we like one genre doesn't mean we can't like another. Variety is the spice of life, you know? If you only stick to shmups, you're missing out a ton of good stuff.

Also, news flash: mainstream games can also be fun. It's cool to hate them but some can be rather entertaining. Battlefield 3 looks really promising.

My backlog mainly consists of stuff I want to play through before I die, whenever that might be.

95% of current gen releases don't factor into this equation at all. I've given most of my collection a good seeing to, but there are still plenty still needing attention.

And a million others that will take too long to list and think through. I'm sort of happy they make very few games I want to commit to these days, as it lets me focus on the catalogue I'm most interested in.
