Ha ha, "basic"!

You obviously have a comprehensive understanding of the game, so we'll consider the argument closed.
I'm still waiting for DTP to share with us what shmups he really likes and finds to have a good balance of difficulty, while not being "impossible or luck-based"

I think this would be a good basis to see why he judges all other shmups so harshly.

I think he should full chain Stage 5A on training mode for great justice

I just picked it because it was first and the chains were lot easier to learn. I'll go do stage 4 after I get a clear this way, the stages there seem more fun from what little I have practiced.

Simple: save a hyper sword. If you feel like you can do it without, it's still useful to have in case you screw up something else there.

Playing this and having a blast! Totally addicted. Now I understand all the hype and legend surrounding the game. I should have invested in a Saturn back in the day...

To me seems like Radiant Silvergun paved a way that nobody else dared to follow as to how a "high budgeted", "AAA", "console" shooter should be done.

I'm going up to the 3E boss with 2.5-2.8M right now. But soon I'll be going to Stage 2.

Same advice here. It seems to me that this part with the yellows to be chained in small corridors is way harder than the almost same passage in Ikaruga (stage 3, right before miniboss.)

Now I use the following method which works almost 90% of the time :
- keep a charged sword, shoot with vulcan
- align your ship with the first hole (easy)
- from now, let go off the stick and look at the immediate next hole.
-> if it is right, slap your stick right
-> if is left, slap your stick left
-> quickly look at next hole and repeat
- Slaps must be brief, but not too mcuh, let go off the stick between each or you'll get stuck in some continuous motion you certainly dont want
- If you lose your count, SWORD IMMEDIATLY.

Weirdly enough, the thing that annoys me the most with this passage, is the vulcan shot. It horribly breaks my concentration. However, I just cant get those yellows out of the way fast enough with any other weapon... any help ?

Einhänder and Thunder Force V went there a year before Radiant Silvergun came along, although it would be debatable whether or not they are quite as stylish (TFV looks particulary shitty on YouTube; not too bad on a CRT).
Actually I believe Silpheed for the Sega/Mega CD should be mentioned on this occasion. I don't like to play it, but it's as bombastic as shmups get.

The first thing that came to mind was "Einhander". That was a real slick shmup. Definitely the AAA PS1 shmup, of the time.
Radiant did take it to another level with that whole animated intro, and ending. How many times do we get THAT, in a shmup?!

I'm going to track down DTP's IP address so I can find where he lives and steal his shmups. Seriosuly, thinking of the privations his Futari disc has been subjected to... :(

His games need to be in better hands.

That's a really good way to tackle (at least parts of chaining) that long section, can't believe I never thought of that! I'd always save a hyper just for breaking down the boss quicker.

The chaining through the narrow gaps just takes getting used to the ship's hitbox, as it's not that bad to maneuver through. Always use the vulcan shot, and focus your eyes slightly ahead of the pattern to know how to dodge. It's a tap-heavy section as mentioned above. Only thing that sucks on those sections is if you get a pattern at the end that kicks you either far right or far left, as you have very little room to get the ship quickly to the center if you're sloppy.

You know, the more I play this, the more I'm thinking...why doesn't SE redo Einhander for XBLA or PSN? That would rock, considering it was kind of the big shmup that kick started a bit of the genre's popularity in the mid-late nineties.

Also, it's not that long, and it can easily be redone for 16:9(without stretching), so it could be on both systems.

I'd rather have G-Darius HD :p Though Einhander actually looks great on emulators because of how high poly the models are. I don't mind the look of it that way. Also means they wouldnt need to do much for a port.

What was that multi-directional downloadable shooter published by Square Enix called? They seem busy publishing this kind of stuff rather than remakes these days, whereas their PSX games - including Einhänder - can be purchased via PSN.
Astonishing how none of those old shmups received a fully accomplished reissue this gen. Ikaruga - lacking enemies at some point, RayStorm - input lag and cropping issues, Radiant Silvergun - no proper 4:3... It's pretty obvious that people who play games on emulators (or should I say "on computers") aren't the core target of this stuff.

If it's any consolation, you only lost ~100 points.

Also, I just noticed that you can just start a multiplayer game and let 2p die off for the two player leaderboard...how disappointing. I was hoping for some forced doubles or proper two player chaining. I wonder if it even takes the lower player's score at all.

God, the exact same thing happened to me on Ikaruga once. Except the very last bullets sent by the diamond in Ikaruga are way easier to be dodged...

Looks like I Got back into shmups at just the right time, I found out a couple of days after downloading 20+ lite version shmup iOS apps and choosing a few of the good ones to purchase, that Radiant Silvergun was being released on XBLA. downloaded it immediately and whilst I'm very rusty at the moment I am really enjoying it.

Never got to play it properly outside of the arcade before now as Saturn copies were to expensive and I had never tried emulation until today.

This is probably not 100% the best place for this question but It is relevant and didn't want to start another RS thread.

My question is does anyone know how or if it is possible to map the controls to an XBOX controller on my PC to play the MAME version of RS using the same button configuration as I would on my XBOX? I'm using MAME on the PC to play RS when the family want use of the TV!!! But don't want to learn two sets of button configurations as one is difficult enough :)

Stage 2B chain, for those who want to see it done.

Speed of movement is key through the chase section. Having a hypersword stocked for emergencies helps, too.

Every button is configurable in both the MAME and X360 versions. Only different being that all 7 weapons can't be mappen to seperate buttons in the arcade version, so if you wanna use the same button layout, stick to a 3-button layout.

That, or you can map your controls in Mame to be button combos, like Button 1 and Button 2, or all three for the sword.

That's all you'd have to do with a six button panel and the arcade board anyway. It supports 3 buttons out of the box, but you can map each attack individually if you really wanted.

Actually, this is ideal ending. No kidding either, it's best to not worry about it. Route 2?

0 Day: Attack on Earth. I think it's only on 360 Live Arcade. The game is ... not for everyone, to put it nicely.

Sumez / man9child,
Thanks for the replies :) I had assumed you would have to map button combos to separate out the seven attacks onto different buttons. Being a bit of a n00b not sure where I would need to do this. I can see the button map for the xbox controller if I open it in control panel but not sure where to go from here. Everything is new to me with emulation and I've never been a PC gamer always been a console player. Any further help would be really appreciated.

Would it be better to run ssf or satourne and try and find a Saturn ROM/ISO. Is I't more difficult to get this configured and ISO's mounted? Can the lite version of daemon tools mount iso's indefinitely.

Sorry for all the q's hopefully when I have a bit more experience I'll be able to help others out and return some favours :)

Feel free to PM me if you'd rather not clog up the post with technical info

EDit: UPDATE
I'm assuming that the controller *.cfg file is the way to go about this anyone feel inclined to help share how I would map the xbox controller to have:
A (Green) - Wide Back (A+C)
B (Red) - Homing (B)
X (Blue) - Homing Spread (B+C)
Y (Yellow) - Vulcan (A)
RB (Right Shoulder) - Spread (C)
RT (Right Trigger) - Radiant/Hyper Sword (A+B+C)
LB (Left SHoulder) - Homing Plasma (A+B)

Start = Start
Back = Pause

LT (left Trigger) = Credit

Hvae noticed that the MAME Version is still a bit buggy it crashed on me on Stage 2B alhough I was eating through credits like no tomorrow :(

0 day is horrible yeah.

They also published Death by Cube, sort of like a giga wing arena shooter with a dashing mechanic. It probably got really low ratings because it's really hard at the beginning if youre not used to bullet herding and whatnot. I think you might like it (obiwanshinobi). I enjoyed playing through it but the multiplayer was actually the best part, which died really quick.
