Movies you've just watched

Watched "Red State." Movie was released on disc prior to a theatrical release (Sept 22nd). Kevin Smith was on a roll in the 90's w/ his eclectic, "witty" (I use that term lightly) comedies;
he put out nothing but shit the decade after. My grievance's with Smith aside, Red State is a decent horror in part due to some excellent performances, primarily Michael Parks. Parks is mainly
known for his role as the Texas Sheriff "Earl" in the Tarrantino & Rodriguez films: From Dusk Till Dawn, Kill Bill I, Kill Bill II, Planet Terror and Death Proof. Oddly enough, we know how he dies in the first of those 5 films.
Back to Red State - decent horror flick, great performances by a couple folks but in the end it's still a Kevin Smith movie....


Goemon - Enjoyed the shit out of it. CGI is way over the top, huge improvement over Casshern.

500 Days of Summer - Decent chick & dick flick. Better music.

Hesher - I was really looking forward to it after seeing the previews. Good performances by Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Rainn Wilson.
I was disappointed when the credits rolled.

The Killers - 1946 adaptation of a Hemingway short story. Solid noir.

Saw that one recently. Good stuff.

All this talk about Naked Lunch has me interested too. Like the rest of you, saw it years ago. Not a fan, but yeah, some of the special effects are incredible.

Yep, the sci-fi/horror hybrid flick of Naked Lunch got it's proper due in the U.S. based horror mag, Fangoria, back in the day with plently of full color shots to get the word out of it's horror & gore type of special FX for the big screen. Rented it from a local Blockbuster when it finally arrived on VHS format back in the early 1990s.

Makes me all the more wish Onimusha told a story worth its premise. It had hinted some pretty cool stuff about Samanosuke and just left it at that. I could tell he once was meant to be a properly fleshed out adventure game hero, but ended up as if Capcom had fired the writer early on and let some completely random person finish the story.

Dororo (2007 live action film). Don't expect it to be faithful to the manga and you should be fine, especially if you liked Blood Will Tell.

Some of the ideas were kind of interesting, but it was executed in the most knuckle draggingly stupid manner possible. The most bland and least threatening dystopiaian future I've ever seen on screen.

That film shouldn't even be mentioned in the same breath as the graphic novel. I know why Moore is so pissed off these days.

Absolutely disturbing and devastating film. The strong documentary feel makes it far worse than any horror bullshit... i don't wanna even talk about it.

SC was a good 8/10.. Interesting Sci fi ground hogs day. Although the ending left one piece of the puzzle missing. If anyone has seen it, was it a parallel universe, a different time span? A little confused.

Parallel universe dude, there's no 'time' hopping involved in the plot.

Fun film, could've done without the shmaltz but I enjoyed it.

Badass film with a great ending.

Forks over Knives - Netflix streaming

a documentary about how the Western diet (in particular, over consumption of meat/dairy products) is killling people through increased cancer rates and heart disease. It has actually made me consider becoming a vegetarian (I would still make exceptions for sushi or other favorite foods in small quantities). It doesn't mention animal cruelty or anything. It focuses on studies by a couple of doctors.

This movie seriously made me think differently about food. Especially when you think about aging relatives who you would like to see remain healthy instead of slowly decline into frailty/disease.

People should check it out.

Lol, there's me looking for something to watch tonight and I remembered this post. Never heard of this film until now, so I just did some brief reading and caught a few clips on youtube.

Really not in the mood (not sure I'll ever be.) I've already got the lowdown on 731 and it was hard enough to read, letalone see visualised. Gawd.

It's obviously a propaganda film, but I do understand why they want people to actually pay some attention. There's no shortage of WWII holocaust movies in the back catalogue, so I guess they deserve to tell their story too. Just don't think I can stomach it.

Men Behind the Sun is toooooo silly to make it disturbing, though. The acting is just too dreadful. The guy was trying to make a point about the atrocities of WWII but instead just made an exploitation film with some animal abuse thrown in for "metaphors" and clearly shock value.

It's not up to the budget of Schindlers List, that's for sure. I did see a woman with frostbitten arms having the flesh ripped from her bones though, which, despite the absurd way it was done, was still horrible to watch. Probably cos in the back of your mind you know similar stuff did actually happen to people. Yuck.

I read the cat slaughter is real archival footage though (I haven't seen it.)

Wait...I was thinking of Black Sun: The Nanking Massacre, which I have seen, and I still stand by that statement that the film is garbage. I've only seen parts of Men Behind the Sun (yeah, the cat is real), but still...both films go for some hideous themes of the war, but are made in an exploitation style. I'd appreciate it a little more if he just made one film, but he made 3 other pseudo-sequels (Black Sun, included) that accomplish the same garbage.

EDIT. Nevermind about the cat. This is news to me: "Though many of the film's gore scenes involve use of real corpses or animal parts, the film's much controversial "cat scene" in fact a well done special effect. Tun Fei Mou covered the cat with red-dyed honey which was licked off the cat by the rats. The cat survived, was cleaned up, rewarded with fish and sent back to his owner. One can notice if watching closely that the rats never bite the cat and it never stops moving or goes limp. The rats were caught by the local schoolchildren and were however set on fire near the end of the shoot which appears on film. The local farmers were apparently quite pleased with Mou for having done so." Kinda funny that this took over 20 years to surface, with even director Tun Fei Mou explaining that he loved animals in interviews, but to make his point they had to kill the cat. But it's okay to set a roomful of rats on fire... Hmmmm.

I think there's 4 or 5 "Men Behind The Sun" films. There's also the Maruta series. Shit is way too disturbing for me.

Not a film, but I've been watching Life On Mars (UK). Bout halfway through the second season.

LOL nice! If you're a fan of Australian straight-to-tv movies check out "Blue Murder". It's one of the best and based on true events.

If you want to see a knockout movie on the subject (not the 731 business, just the wartime invasion) then go for City of Life and Death. It's really superb.

anyways, I've watched a shitton of movies since I last posted here, so I will skip right ahead to what I watched yesterday. Fright Night, the remake with Colin Farrell. Being a fan of the original I didn't get my hopes up for this one, but surprisingly, it was AWESOME! They kept it real close, story wise, to the original and used some of the scenes and dialog, but in a new way. And Colin Farrell did a great job as "Jerry the Vampire".

9/10 for me. One of the best new movies I've watched this year.

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy

I liked it. Very well filmed and handled with the kind of attention I'd expect from the Let The Right One In director.

There are a few niggles: it's a rather complex plot and the chopping up of flashback sequences and ordering of events makes it a little tough to follow completely. There's not a lot of dialogue that directly informs - which is a good thing - but in a movie with an intricate spy plot there are times you're left looking for something to cling on to.

That said by the time it wraps I had 95% down, with only one lingering question that I had to wiki.

It's an acquired taste: very slow, a real old fashioned cold war spy movie. But if you like that sort of thing, you'll enjoy.

And Gary Oldman is superb, as usual, along with most (but not all) of the supporting cast.

I just saw Drive in theaters. Holy frickin shit it was awesome. It's like the movie that Michael Mann has been trying to make his entire career, but never really got right. Might have to go see it again...

Johnny English: Reborn

Makes a lot of fun on other action movies, especially the James Bond ones. Like how taking an elevator down would beat a villain climbing down construction beams dangerously.

So, Real Steel actually ended up being very good. It was really everything you could want in a sports movie combined with a solid sci-fi theme. Hugh Jackman did a great job with his character. and the ending was stellar. One of the best movies from this year for me, surprisingly.

Men Behind The Sun wasn't that great. The director handled things well with his budget and resources, but the movie itself just kinda meandered and was a bit boring. I think it's one of those trappings that exploitative films fall into - the premise sounds cool and the really gory stuff stands out to shock the hell outta people; however, there's this other 90 minutes of badly-written dialogue and amateur acting to get to the highlight. And it's not that the director wasn't old hat at filming and editing because even maestros have made these kinds of exploitative duds. Check out Tinto Brass's Salon Kitty (I still ended up getting the 2-disc Special Edition)
