Playing Master System/Mark 3 ?

Post by akumajo »

Hi,

I was lucky to find a big lot of Master System games (cheap) and now I would like to play them.

Is there a recommended model / region ?

My needs are :
- RGB enabled (require mod + cable ?)
- to be able to play US and PAL games (need some converter ?)
- to be able to play all games @60 hz (need a 50/60 switch ?)
- anything that I forgot ?

I'm also interested to buy a modded sms/mark 3 that fit my needs  .

Thanks.

The european Master System units are fully RGB-capable out of the box. You can use the Mega Drive RGB cable.

maybe that the SMS is extremely troublesome in use with the XRGB-3 - at least with some users here.

A Power Base Converter may be cheaper/more efficient depending on what you have and want.

Thx but I prefer to avoid power base converter (I heard bad things about compatibility) + it will take too much height in my cabinet :).

PAL Master System 2 + official RGB cable + 50/60 switch + 2 pads + phaser for 60€ is good deal ?

Should works fine with XRGB-3 or FX2+ :).

Extra question, can I use the same gamepad extension cable as megadrive ones ?

The MS2 didn't have RGB anymore, so it would be a RGB mod - and hence no official RGB cable ;)

Yes, the controller extensions will work.

ok, maybe its already rgb modded (will ask), in France there is an official cable called "Adapteur RVB" (model 3085) sold with Master System and Megadrive.

I wonder why the french RGB kits did include to much electronic parts. I had the official german/UK Master System RGB cable (Sega labeled packaging and cable) and it was just a standard RGB cable as we know them - without the "box" shown in the french one.

If you - in fact - get this cable, let us know how it performs. Maybe you can even test it on a MD.

[when I see something like this I always think of the french NES fiasco with it's terrible composite to RGB encoder built into it....]

i already have this cable, and i have issue with megadrive + xrgb (loose sync) so I had to buy a custom cable :)

This cable is DIN8, and the console I noticed is sold with this cable so it would mean that Master System 2 have an DIN8 input. As far I know you need to mod a Master System 2 for this input ? Or it's only available in France ?

Have you tried this mod: http://www.segakore.fr/articles/mod_cab ... fr_md.html ?

The MS2 did *not* have a DIN8 output anymore, just a RF output. But there are mods like this:

I checked many other auctions of frenchs Master System II and it seems that they all have an A/V connector (din8) but without the RF port.
I'm so confused :P.

that din 8 mod would be cool. it is a lot like PCE Duo-R mods where a lot of people just tap the RGB inside and swap the din to a 8 prong din. That way the original composite cable can be used as well as a RGB cable. I know that PCE and SMS/MD use the same video cable so it might just be a matter of tapping the RGB inside.

confirmed by seller and other french techs
Master System 2 PAL FRENCH (only) is RGB ready. The only mod that is needed is a 50/60hz switch.

interesting, thanks !

If you end up buying the unit, let us know how good it looks and if you run into problems with the XRGB.
