I always think of them by colors too. Mostly coz Nintendo swaps the positions of A+B & X+Y. Also Sony's X is where 360's A is. Friggin' confusing.
Not if you're used to the Dreamcast.

It's precisely because of Sega's close relationship with MS immediately after the DC's Western demise that the controllers are the way they are. The Xbox was intended to be something of a Dreamcast 1.5--of course, Halo and the brogamers killed all that. But Microsoft was actually the one pushing for new Panzer Dragoon and JSR games to be made in the Xbox's early days.

I believe that the weapon level up targets are the same.

On the XBLA version, right before Gallop:

From my ancient MAME practice play, at the same location and strategies:

Unrelated, does anyone else think that Treasure keeps an R-Type II cabinet in their offices? They seem to really like the weapons in that game (they used the search laser in Gradius V too).

I believe that Gallop was intended as a not-so-subtle message for Irem to "make another R-Type, already!"

Coincidentally or not, Delta came out the next year.

Well, I suppose I was wrong then. I still intend to do some closer comparisons though.

For now though, I think we can all agree that the removal of the slowdown does make the XBLA version a slightly harder game than the ST-V/Saturn version.

That's just not true.

I like the majority of the shooters I play. I just don't like this game because it feels incredibly antiquated and basic.

Erm... basic? In what way is it basic? It is clearly, in my mind, a highly involved experience with many things to balance and consider, quite the opposite of basic.

I sure am glad that this game has story mode. Otherwise I'm not sure I would ever get off stage one. Arcade mode is really punishing and I am currently struggling with some of the relatively early bosses even though I have weapons that are twice as powerful as would be available normally.

Thankfully story mode is giving me the opportunity to learn chains without the strict punishment of mistakes in arcade mode.

You're probably right. It works beautifully for me with most of the shmups, but I find I always feel massively ham-fisted when I try to play SF games with it...

So, I've clocked over 50 hours on the clock now and nothing has unlocked. Seems very strange to keep the power-on timer there if nothing unlocks...

That's really disappointing to hear. And yeah, that makes no sense for that clock to keep running like that. What a tease.

Any problems with lag using this setup? Should we be looking for a specific PS2 convertor for the 360 or will any of the cheap Hong Kong models on eBay suffice? Are there any models that support rumble that do not require you to also connect a wired 360 controller?
The Keio converter has been designed to be totally lag free. I used the same PS2 to 360 converter I got with my X-Arcade and I've not had any input lag problems (for some reason I just prefer a pad with RSG, probably so I can have my thumb on the fire buttons and finger on the shoulder for the sword). I don't think there are any PS2 to 360 converters that work without the 360 pad attached though. I wasn't aware Keio stopped making the Saturn to PS2 converters, you could always try writing to them and asking if more are going to be manufactured.

Seems X-Gaming are using these PS2 to 360 converters and just re-branding them:-

Thanks for the info. Looks like it's just one of the generic cheapo Chinese models. Shouldn't be a problem picking up a cheap one from eBay. Luckily I already have a wired 360 controller.

The grey version works perfectly, lagless and without the need of a wired XBOX360 controller, It is called xbox360 controller converter PRO. I got it and it works . http://superufo.com/item_photo/item/XB3 ... -X-400.jpg But it's hardly to find in stock. Remember it must be grey and got the PRO.

I play with my modded mayflash arcade stick with seimitsu parts.

Here's another one http://etokki.com/Xtokki360. I haven't tested this last one.

I want to reiterate the point that you're basing this point off a demo that most players agree does a terrible job of representing the game as a whole. While Treasure bears some fault for implementing the demo poorly, it's still not fair to evaluate the entire game without having played the entire game.

Yes it does : how much time will it take you to 1CC the game is the question.
When I see my Ikaruga counter over 75 hours, and still no 1CC, I am slightly depressed.

However I agree that special options a la Saturn version would be appreciated.

Does it support rumble?

Yes, it supports rumble. I just tested now with Pac-man Championship Edition DX using a PS2 controller with converter controller pro and it does rumble. I just had tested it for playing with my arcade stick and I ignored that support.

About RSG, I'm playing it with my arcade stick which has eight buttons, but I just use three of them and theirs combinations, as I think the RSG arcade used to.

Been playing pretty hardcore for the last few days now, but a sense of tedium is beginning to set in. It's not the chaining so much as it is the weapon-leveling that's wearing on me. Obviously, they go hand-in-hand, but there's a sense of starting an RPG over from the beginning every time I play. When I DO play, I enjoy myself, but thinking about it too much always incurs a sense of dread, like I'm about to go get on the treadmill for a work-out.

Same here, I've had a cold throughout the week though so have had more time to play than usual. Never played the game before this port but I've already managed to no-miss to stage 5 with ~10mil. I got destroyed by the stage 5 boss having never played it though. Not getting tired yet, gotta finish this :p

Also, possible glitch with the port?: one of UE2A-GAL(3E boss)'s side wall parts stayed invulnerable for like four seconds instead of being damageable right away.

Well, it times your gameplay time also. I can just have it on the menu, and that other clock keeps running. I don't see the need for both.

Not sure if this was my brothers TV or not, but while playing the game around the second boss, the sound just muted. No music or effects. I went back to dashboard and it was muted there too. I had to restart the console to get the sound back (I also switched channels on the TV).

Just tried the trial and i must say that the fact you use a seperate button for each attack kinda dumbs it down for me- it's much more fun when you summon the weapons with button combos a la Saturn and arcade.
If they're gonna pull that one on us i'd rather be playing Prismatic Solid :)

They CHANGED the Bangai-O trial? What did they change? 3 new stages instead of the 3 original ones?

I haven't tried it myself but I heard that they added a proper tutorial to the trial.

Ha ha, "basic"!

You obviously have a comprehensive understanding of the game, so we'll consider the argument closed.

...you can set the button configuration to whatever you like. I'm sure the first thing most people do is configure it for the standard arcade setup - I know I did :D

By the way, has anybody got any tips for chaining the yellows on Golets? I'm fine with the first two groups but I always seem to crash and burn on the long last section :x

For some reason I also find it much easier if Golet goes right and the 'tunnel' containing the yellows is on the left side - anybody else find this?

Why do most people play the Stage 2 route anyway? All the bosses apart from 4B and 4C are very easy (barely need to dodge anything) if you get most of the chains in the levels so you can speedkill them. Stuff like Golets and that damn circle boss seem way more challenging to me.. but yeah, I've barely given any time to Stage 2 yet, will after I get the eventual 1cc
