I don't, I promise. I often feel like I'm talking a bit too loud, and this normally happens in noisier environments. Regardless you seem to have missed the point of what I was saying, when this happens they've often barely misheard what I said at all, and most people would have just taken a moment to connect the dots rather than instantly insisting what I said made no sense.jonny5 wrote:Maybe you mumble?Deca wrote:I can't stand it when people repeatedly hear me wrong, or at least think they do, and then immediately repeat the sentence back to me word for word with the exception of maybe one letter being wrong in one word. It's entirely possible to speak loudly without annunciating.

I occasionally have the same problem, but it's usually because I am speaking with an accent, usually not my own.

How is he technically saying it right? "I can care less" indirectly states he is capable of caring less, when means he currently has some form of care concerning the situation. If the majority of people think that something is right when it is clearly wrong, it does not become right by popular opinion. If 98% of people say that the sqrt(25) = 4 that does not make it so.

Wait.... what?Even more surprisingly, the Detroit Regional Workforce finds half of that illiterate population has obtained a high school degree.

I worked at an arcade located right next to a bus stop, where the majority of passengers were from Detroit, for a long time. We ran on tokens, and I can't tell you how often people put money into the machines, expecting quarters. Our machines are lit up and CLEARLY say "TOKENS", so it's an obvious annoyance to get yelled at, frequently, about wanting a refund when we have a "no refund" policy, also clearly stated on our machines. At first I thought they were just careless, but I eventually realized that a lot of them just couldn't read. We've had customers sit at our counter while their children read and filled out their job applications, and I've had to explain how to play games because they couldn't read the instructions, etc.

Personally, college wasn't a waste of time for me, but I think that it matters what your degree is in. My sister graduated with B.S. in Psychology and is waiting tables (she makes pretty good money though. It's a nice place), whereas I had already accepted a job in my field of study (engineering) 2 months before I had even graduated.

No seriously, it's a really really interesting watch. If you've got some free time you should go for it. It doesn't outright say that having some form of education is bad, but criticises the system of delivery and the false parameters (do we really need another law graduate?)burgerkingdiamond wrote:I don't care enough to start a new thread but go ahead if you feel like it.Skykid wrote:Watch: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VpZtX32sKVEburgerkingdiamond wrote: in what way is a college education useless?

It reveals the system to be something very different to how it's marketed: not all grads are guaranteed high wage jobs at all. The stats are stirred, and the real figures are very revealing.
It also explains how the internet is the school of today and the current educational system is a business that is immoral at the root and should be abolished.
If you do watch it I promised you'll enjoy (and be enlightened.) It's very informative.

I'm in the "Went to college, got a degree that didn't get me a high paying job, now working a job that anybody could do + a lifetime of debt." camp.
College is a great social experience and you will grow as a person, but don't expect it to get you a job and don't pay too much for your education, in my opinion.

I just see it like this, the higher the education, the more capitalistic propaganda will be infested in your brain.
This goes especially for anything involving economics.

Re: Little things that annoy the hell out of you
I think that's where one of the problems rests: thinking everything is guaranteed. The Internet is fine and dandy, but there is so much information and misinformation coming from it. How would an uneducated person be able to critically discern one from the other and neatly summarise things to make them applicable to their life?Skykid wrote:No seriously, it's a really really interesting watch. The other problem is being fiscally irresponsible when it comes to paying for education. Sure, there are 100-dollar textbooks for one class. Why not buy them used? Why not buy an older edition? Why not attend class and pay real close attention to what the prof. is focusing on? School costs too much? There's always junior college; do a 2-year stint there and spare yourself the cost of spending a s***load of cash. Hence, not only do some people think things are "guaranteed" to them, but they also feel entitled to costly stuff.

Um... last time I checked, no one was enforcing the views of Big Pharma, Big Insurance, Bank of America or any other private corporation in class, or ideas that only investors and burgeousie (SP?) are holding society together. Is there any reference that can substantiate that claim?
EDIT: xbl0x180 post kind of answers it: It's not all about the money.
Don't hold grudges. GET EVEN.
Re: Little things that annoy the hell out of you
Many (if not most) students do. It's not actually much cheaper in most cases, and textbooks are typically dwarfed by tuition, fees, and living expenses anyway.xbl0x180 wrote:The other problem is being fiscally irresponsible when it comes to paying for education. Professors often assign specific sections for reading assignments and specific problems from the text as homework, and those references tend to be wrong/nonexistent in an older edition. Some publishers even screw around with the cheaper "international" printings to intentionally cause this kind of problem even if it's the same edition number. You're new to this game, aren't you?Why not buy an older edition?
