R-Type for Android has been released

Post by Travellinman »

Having a glance at the current active threads here, I discovered that until now no one seems to have mentioned the release of R-Type for Android. That's why I do it.

Yeah, yeah, I know shmups should be played with a stick (as I do it at home, too) and touch-input can be painful but trust me the release is quite good and I really enjoy playing it for some minutes on my Honeycomb tablet when I have to be on the road again for work.

They went under like CAVE went under when they said they were going to make some more Facebook games. A bunch of people overreacted and said they were going under when they were pulling some games from the Japanese PSN. That's about it.

Can we get a new R-Type? I mean, sure, these ports are cool and all, but R-Type Final seemed like a sour way to end the main series. Hell, if Darius has an audience, maybe R-Type still does.
Why is it called the Vic Viper/Warp Rattler? Because the Options trail behind it in a serpent-like fashion, and the iconic front fins are designed to invoke the image of a snake's fangs.

I sent a mail to the DotEmu guys a week or two ago asking if this port was an indication of getting R-Type to the Irem Arcade Hits collection they've previously released, but got no reply.

Is it full touchscreen control ala cave ports, or is it a virtual joystick?

Irem's in far worse shape than Cave: they had to cancel ZZT 4, their biggest project in years, right before it was released. All their key staff have jumped ship, and pachinko is literally the only thing keeping them afloat. Even when R-Type Final was being made, things were pretty dire, hence the "final"--they were rushing to finish the game before everyone who knew how to make a shmup left the company. The game's pretty much a funeral for the series and Irem.

Of course, the real Irem died in 1995.

Irem originally closed in 1995, but quickly re-formed under the same name and with most of their staff. Sort of like Psikyo/X-Nauts and SNK/SNKP.

Thanks for the heads-up, I went and bought it. It's OK, I don't notice any input lag on my Xperia Play. I haven't spent much time with it, but there are some glitches here and there - slight freezes and audio errors. Hope those get ironed out so this plays smoothly.

For all the mobile haters, you'll wish you had this when you're stuck in the middle of nowhere.

That seems a tad extreme. Maybe he should play a video game on it.

I used to hate handheld stuff. I did, really.
But when Darius Burst was announced I was *forced* to get one because, you know, Darius and I have a profound love relationship, ever since I laid eyes on Sagaia for the Mega Drive.
And now I'm a happy PSP owner!

I've been debating getting a psp purely for shmups. Did you get an imported one, or is there a way around the region locking?

Gradius Galaxies is still the best handheld-exclusive shooter. Better than almost all the numbered Gradiuses.

PSP is region free for games to start with. Except for BattleZone, for some reason. And movies are region locked.

Oh, and since I just bought the game I guess I should talk a bit about it.
Moniker wrote:Is it full touchscreen control ala cave ports, or is it a virtual joystick?
You can choose between the two in the options. I'd say the touchscreen one works far better. But playing touchscreen also makes the speedups useless, since you can now move as fast and accurately as your finger.

I haven't played any games of this caliber on my phone before, but I guess it works well enough for what it is. Your fingers will obscure the enemies sooner or later, which is a bummer. But otherwise it works okay for a mobile game and it didn't crash on me once (Samsung Galaxy S).

Why would you want to smash one of the best modern portables?

It has Gradius Collection and Metal Gear Acid. I mean, come on!

Not to mention the Parodius collection. The PSP is the best platform for shmups this gen.

I agree...it was a joke (playing off Kollision's previous post on "crushing handy technology" - but i guess he meant "phones"?

Truth be told, I own 2 PSP's...on my newer one I play Darius Burst, Salamander Portable, Gradius Collection, Bomberman and Wipeout Pure...

The old one? Usually Pulstar :P

To add to the thread derail, I also own 2 PSPs (JP 1000 and NA 3000) but damn, the footprint is still huge and I don't want to carry them around all the time. My Xperia Play is considerably smaller although still large by mobile phone standards, but at least it is always in my front pocket. And I play Pulstar on it too ;)
