Child of Eden by Q
Re: Child of Eden by Q
Picked up Child of Eden and a Kinect last night so I can talk a little about that. Plays a billion times better with the controller, but the Kinect controls certainly aren't bad. The biggest problem seems to stem from how you use your right hand for lock on and your left for rapid fire. Unfortunately there's only one targeting reticle, so it tends to jump when you switch from hand to hand. Moving the cursor to the edge of the screen also swings the camera, causing you to lose focus if you're not careful.

Also if you use a Kinect with CoE, simply bending your knees and pretend that you're scanning the sky or the ground or by twisting your entire body to either your left or right side, will the camera's POV (Point of View) change in that direction regardless of what weapon is currently being used at any given time. The Kinect is smart enough to detect if you want to change the camera's POV with your body position while using either hand. Definitely some serious dual real-time camera tracking going on with CoE with a Kinect alrighty.
It feels easier to control the lock-on/rapid-fire weapons with your hands (and easier to lock on the purple bullets to wipe them out as well). It certainly does give CoE a new novel way of playing with a Kinect besides using a traditional 360 analog D-pad setup for the old-school Rez gamer purist.

No, "Trance Mission" was different, I think the all-stage mode was "Direct Assault" or something like that. I'm always up for extras, but in the developers' defense a "full" playthrough of CoE would take a pretty darn long time, it'd seem.chempop wrote:The only thing I think it is sorely missing is a mode that let's you play all the stages in succession... I forgot what it was called in Rez, but I always played that mode (Trancemission?)
IIRC there's an alternate Kinect scheme which allows you to use a single cursor and switch back and forth between shot types by clapping or something like that...have you tried it?The biggest problem seems to stem from how you use your right hand for lock on and your left for rapid fire. Re: Child of Eden by Q
Ah that's right, Trance Mission was the extra stage, Direct Assault is definitely what I meant. I think 1 hour is fine for a non-stop playthrough. It just keeps the pace going so well in Rez and it's more challenging without resetting energy at the beginning of every stage. No, "Trance Mission" was different, I think the all-stage mode was "Direct Assault" or something like that. I think at some point next week I'll replay Rez and see how CoE compares in terms of challenge and enjoyment (I've probably played though Rez over 100 times, but it's been a couple years).

this game's cursor movement (controller) is the best i've ever felt.

The scoring system in this game is really fun. You need to sync your 8x shot releases with the beat, or you lose your multiplier. It's like half rhythm game, half rail shooter. It's a big improvement over Rez in that regard.
Re: Child of Eden by Q
I'm really loving this, and Kinect works fantastically well in my space (a set-up that had previously felt a little small for Kinect).
It feels like playing a high-end demoscene, which is just amazing, and I agree with those who like the scoring. More so than with Rez, I'm enjoying trying to score a bit with Child of Eden

Re: Child of Eden by Q
I'm starting to like the scoring as well, but having pretty much never played rhythm games that took a while after playing Rez a lot :p
I think I still sort of like Rez HD more since I dig that kind of music more and the clean wireframe style, and CoE doesn't have as much of a sense of progression in the levels or something like Rez's Area 5. The challenge area seems to be really awesome though. But both are awesome games, I'm sure I'll be playing them both for a long time.
kid aphex: for me it feels like it should be just a little bit faster, top speed feels sort of slow

i agree...i guess i meant the fidelity of the cursor, not relative to the actual gameplay.Zaarock wrote:

which may or may not make any sense at all.
Re: Child of Eden by Q
Yeah finally beat HOPE, that was not easy! It's an amazing stage though, layer 10 was simply insane.
Plowed through Hard mode so I've unlocked just about everything I think (missing some art gallery pieces though).
I thought this would be getting more attention here, after all, it is the sequel to the best (non-shmup) game ever made.

Picked this up last night, I'm really struggling to get a score multiplier - I just can't find the beat or structure to the music, it's like a backing track almost. I wish there was a beat bar or something.

What stage were you playing? most of them have a connection between the beat and other sounds which make timing much easier, but stage 4 is still really hard for me to get into the rhythm. I found stage 2 the easiest at first.system11 wrote:Picked this up last night, I'm really struggling to get a score multiplier - I just can't find the beat or structure to the music, it's like a backing track almost. I can't really say I had much success with it either, but when playing with controller it vibrates to the beat you're supposed to be matching. Definitely going to take a bit of practice.

I'm going to go out on a limb and assume that you guys having trouble chaining perfect octo-locks haven't taken a dance class or played a musical instrument in your life.
It's not that hard, listen to the music and count in your head 1-2-3-4 while tapping your foot. Release the lock-on shot button on any of those down-beats and viola!

Day 2 - getting chains all over the place now, except I'm so focused on scoring that I just sort of die. Oops.

Well, I'm loving it. GOTY of 2011 easily for me.chempop wrote: I thought this would be getting more attention here, after all, it is the sequel to the best (non-shmup) game ever made.
I'd say COE is on the same level as Rez. I give both games a perfect score of 10/10

Sadly, if you trust the numbers on vgchartz this game bombed, only 45,000 copies sold in the US and Europe combined, what a shame

girlfriend bought it on day of release and has been playing it on and off over the past 2 weeks roughly. hasn't long completed normal and is finding it quite fun. kinect controls are pretty smooth i have to say but controller is definitely better
It's about "realizing their actuality." And judging by the look on Jane's face, she's realized it a couple of times already.

Re: Child of Eden by Q
I had the opportunity to try the game with Kinect over the weekend. I'm not sure if it was because there was virtually no light source in the room but I had so much trouble firing off my locks that I couldn't even clear Matrix on normal. Definitely not a peripheral-seller.

Re: Child of Eden by Q
Arrived today (with free cheap t-shirt(!)) and I have to say I love it. It took me back to when I first played the demo of Rez on the DC and thought "wow".
When all is said and done this game makes me smile and that must be a good thing.
Also, this has to be ripe for DLC in a few months time??

Re: Child of Eden by Q
So, only 3 months after release and it seems this game is pretty much dead and forgotten
What's up people, didn't COE live up to your expectations? Don't you like the rhythm based gameplay?
I just played stage 4 on hard for the first time, dropped my chain at least 3 or 4 times during the level and played it save on the boss as I was down on my last bit of energy. Still I'm ranked 8th on the leaderboards! And it's like that on all the stages, one playthrough and I'm usually inside the top 20. I highly doubt more than 50 people worldwide have even tried to play COE for score and that's a shame considering how many people claimed Rez is one of their favourite games ever and how hyped they were for COE.
Anyone feels the same?

Anyone here able to compare the Move and Kinect versions of the game?
I have Move already, but I feel like this is a game that should be played on Kinect for the full "spiritual" experience.

Re: Child of Eden by Q
I think it's great and on par with Rez as well. Just haven't felt like playing it or many other games seriously recently.. might also be because I find it more enjoyable on a HDTV than the CRT monitor I have my 360 plugged into 99% of the time.antares wrote:So, only 3 months after release and it seems this game is pretty much dead and forgotten

I bought Rez HD today and am having a blast playing it, its good to see that COE is as good. Ill be sure to pick it up soon.
Shame about the DLC and a even greater shame the game sold so little. I wonder how many mainstream gamers were put off with it having Kinnect on the box

I think the much bigger problem is that "it's only 2 hours long!" Most gamers are not willing to pay retail price for a game they can "beat" in one sitting before heading out to Gamestop to trade it in.TrevHead (TVR) wrote: I wonder how many mainstream gamers were put off with it having Kinnect on the box

I like Rez HD a lot more. I was really let down by the levels in COE.
My rhythm skills are nonexistent, so it didn't really help that I didn't gel with the scoring system.

What did you think of the Hope level then? I think that was pretty impressive in a way similar to Rez.nem wrote:I like Rez HD a lot more. I was really let down by the levels in COE.
IMO CoE is better at least gameplay wise because of the addition of the rhythm mechanic, it makes the experience more intensive and the scoring system more interesting. I like the visual and music style of Rez more but after giving CoE some time I started liking the music a lot as well and some of the visual ideas are pulled off really well.
One of the coolest parts of the game for me is the lotus boss (on pad): whenever you complete a full set of locks while moving in circular motions, you'll always get a perfect lock, the bosses shapes and your cursor making circles move at the same pace as the beat of the music.
