3rd Strike Online Edition
3rd Strike Online Edition
Any one else playing this?
I find it really awesome. They did this package right for the most part. Ranked matches are a bit of a joke but everything else is sweet.

Re: 3rd Strike Online Edition
you really missed out on 3S yesterday, we had a pretty good session going from like 4:30 to 10:30. every once in a while someone that didn't really play would give it a shot too and we even had some random guy that was just at the casino stop by and play a few rounds.
Re: 3rd Strike Online Edition
How is the barrier to entry on SF3? I've played the first 2 iterations VERY casually, so I have very little expertise w/ parrying and whatnot. Is parrying THE gimmick for this game? Will I get owned by a guy who can parry even if I can block well?

Parrying isn't essential, look at any pro game, they don't parry very often. Buy it to enjoy if anything! Great game.
Re: 3rd Strike Online Edition
If you can combo consistently in punishment situations and play fundamentally sound, then you can beat newer players (e.g. everyone else who started on 3SO) without worrying at all about parrying. Unlike what some newer players think, parrying is not magical luck where someone can be awful but just parry his way to a win.
Parry skill is gradually built around knowledge of option selects and experience against a variety of patterns so if the opponent knows that much more than you to successfully connect with parries, then chances are you won't be a match regardless. And that's really the main issue that many intermediate players have with parries: they give better players an even better tool to overpower weaker opponents outside of basics such as combos, spacing, and poking.

This is because pro players know how must hit and dont get parried. Is sad, but if you are a good parry-player you are great in this game. Try parry on guilty gear...kernow wrote:Parrying isn't essential, look at any pro game, they don't parry very often. Buy it to enjoy if anything! Great game.

Re: 3rd Strike Online Edition
At 39, I feel like my reflexes are just too slow for fighters anymore, but have to say that 3S has always been one of my favorite fighters. Not that I ever played it competitively, but always thought it was just a very fun game. Characters felt like they had real weight, and the parries added a whole different dimension to gameplay (though I am terrible at them.) Way more in the way of mind games instead of the very strict rules of zoning.
I also didn't give a shit about the balance. The characters all felt very original, even if some of them couldn't hold up to uber-chun li and uber-ken. I'd rather play with the oddballs any day.

Re: 3rd Strike Online Edition
Parry is just an imaginary wall people who don't play the game and new player put up for themselves.
Hit confirming is far more essential than parrying.
The game is so great because it's a thinking game. There is no solid 100% recipe for the meta game or wake up game, which is what makes it so fun. If you can read your opponent, you can win.

Still it seems the ability to parry properly can change the flow of a match completely, I see that a lot in pro matches even if they don't parry all the time.kernow wrote:Parrying isn't essential, look at any pro game, they don't parry very often. Buy it to enjoy if anything! Great game.

Re: 3rd Strike Online Edition
If you are getting parried a lot, you probably need to mix up the opponent a bit more.

a bit off topic, but I just got a Dreamcast to jamma adapter and plan on learning this game with that port. any opinions on the quality of that version?
thanks in advance.

Re: 3rd Strike Online Edition
Apparently the parries have less frames to be entered correctly. I know there are some other subtle issues that come up in high level play, but can say after putting 3 years or so into the DC port that it is a GREAT and very playable port. I honestly can't tell the difference between the versions, but never played them side by side.

I am enjoying the PS3 DL as well, it is enjoyable against friends of course - but I still prefer the DC to it. CPS3, well, one day...

Don't worry about it. You can travel from the Milky Way to Andromeda and back 1500 times before the sun explodes.

Re: 3rd Strike Online Edition
You can switch to the original songs and some arranges through the "vault" unlockables thing.
Also, apparently the PS3 version has 2-3 frames of input lag (like some other capcom fighters?) while the 360 ver is fine.

Re: 3rd Strike Online Edition
Just a couple of corrections:
The initial report that the PS3 version of 3SOE has additional frames of input lag over the 360 version has been disproved. RoboKrikit performed extensive tests over at SRK. We can probably put those early reports down to variation in people's laggy TVs.
antron
Secondly, the Dreamcast version of 3rd Strike is not considered to be tournament worthy. It has issues with input lag and some of the Super Arts (like Yun's Genei Jin) don't behave as they should. It's also based of a later revision that removed certain unblokable set-ups (Urein's Aegis reflector crap), but the competitive consensus is that the earlier revision is preferable. 3SOE is based on the earlier revision (unblokables intact) and it's considered the version to play.
The DC version is otherwise spot-on, and doesn't have the minor HUD changes that 3SOE introduced.
It all depends how seriously you want to take it. People played the DC version happily for years until the PS2 version, and if you haven't played any other version, it's absolutely fine.
Zaarock:
Oh, and the PS3 version of SFIV has one additional frame of input lag. I can't believe they still use it for EVO when all the top players play on arcade/360.

Re: 3rd Strike Online Edition
DC version runs a little faster, too. It is harder to parry on that version.
While you might see a whole match where there was nothing parried, the players are very much aware that their attacks can be parried, and they keep that in mind.Parrying isn't essential, look at any pro game, they don't parry very often. Buy it to enjoy if anything! Great game.
Yeah, at a fundamental level, I think hit confirming is more important than parrying. Any time you get free damage, you have to maximize its damage output, and the better the level of play becomes, the less chances you get to get any sort of damage. Matches can be lost just because someone didn't hit confirm, which adds up.If you can combo consistently in punishment situations and play fundamentally sound, then you can beat newer players (e.g. everyone else who started on 3SO) without worrying at all about parrying. There are players your age (or close to it) that are still able to play at a high level (in different games). Maybe its motivation? Fighting games aren't Starcraft. As long as you are aware of the situation and know how to act, then you should be okay.At 39, I feel like my reflexes are just too slow for fighters anymore, but have to say that 3S has always been one of my favorite fighters. Re: 3rd Strike Online Edition
I think motivation is definitely part of it. I feel like it is harder to play fighters well than when I was in college, but I also don't feel the motivation to practice everyday--something that I think it pretty critical to doing well at these sorts of games.TarkanX wrote:There are players your age (or close to it) that are still able to play at a high level (in different games). Should also add, at this point I've been starting to enjoy reading books more than video games lately. Not that I ever stopped loving books, but surprised to find that in the competition between video games and books for my attention, books have been winning lately.

Re: 3rd Strike Online Edition
3rd Strike Online added two new raps that weren't in the original, but the original raps are also available. Either way, it's rap.

Re: 3rd Strike Online Edition
Actually I prefer the embarassing rap in the new release because it's more in-your-face horrible and catchy, in a "I wanna take you for a ride" kinda way - the old embarassing SF3 rap was just plain bad.
Actually now that I think of it, "I wanna take you for a ride" is excellent.

Re: 3rd Strike Online Edition
I actually like the old rap musically (though more the menu/title/victory screen rap than the character select rap). I'm not big on melodyless talking over drumbeats but I can sort of get behind it if there's actually some melody going on in the background.
