Little off topic, but what Genesis shooters DID have a US release?
I'm getting a Genesis soon, so that's why I'm asking.

Edit: Can you also help me find good, HIGH PACE shooters for the Genesis? I just played Gaiares and the game is too slow for me (almost fell asleep).

Thunderforce III is pretty fast. I find that Fireshark is fast (especially when you bump it up to medium or hard).

Phielos, Truxton, Thunderforce II, Thunderforce III, Thunderforce IV (Lightening Force), Whip Rush, Fire Shark, Gaiares, Darius II (Sagaia), Battlemania 1 (Trouble Shooter), Viewpoint, Musha Aleste (M.U.S.H.A.), Forgotten Worlds, Kyokyou Tiger (Twin Cobra), Raiden Trad, Biohazard Battle, Steel Empire, V-5 (Grindstormer), Gynoug (Wings of Wor), and Arrow Flash got released in the US.

As far as fast paced games, I found Fire Shark, Twin Cobra, Thunder Force III, Lightening Force, and Truxton to be quite fast paced.

Doh. Missed one. Wasn't there also some shooter game from EA that was ported from Amiga?

Battle Squadron, yes.

I think your list is just the japanese shooters that were released in the USA. There's some other western shootern like Crossfire (Super Airwolf) and Gadget Twins.

And then there's the Mega CD shooters, of which all (except Devastator, I think) were released in the US.

Well Gadget Twins is more of a flying action game than an actual shooter, so I didn't count that one. I forgot about Crossfire, though. Also, most of the European shooters for the Genesis stayed in Europe. I didn't list that one from EA becuase I forgot the name of it. I didn't include SEGA CD at all becuase I count them as SEGA CD shooters. I know that they were Lords of Thunder, Sol Feace, Robo Aleste, and one other. I didn't intend to list only Japanese games localized for the US, but the majority of the Genesis shooters that came out in the US version were designed in Japan.

Oh yeah, I forgot Space Invaders '91. That's also Kolibari for the 32X and that 32X game that had its name changed to Zaxxon for the US, though it originally didn't have much to do with Zaxxon.

Actually, more than one more.

Keio Flying Squadron, Android Assault (Bari-Arm) and Silpheed.

EDIT: I always think of Mega CD also as "Megadrive". Cuz it's not like you can play on a Mega CD on it's own.

Doh. I always forget about Keio becuase it's something that you wouldn't expect to come to the US, even though it did. I should have remembered the other two. I have the PS2 Silpheed and I read quite a bit about the SEGA CD one. I'm surprised I didn't forget to list Forgotten Worlds for the Genesis. I have that game and like it quite a, but, for some odd reason, I used to always forget about it.

I just got the Mega CD one recently. It's actually pretty good as far as early non-textured polygon stuff is concerned. Certainly looks a hell of a lot nicer than Starfox and it's actually a real shmup.

just got Fire Shark and it is really decent. two little problems though:

1) if i get hit, i want to explode, not watch my ship flame on for a couple seconds

2) if i kill an enemy i want them to explode, not spiral around and confuse me. this especially pisses me off when they have waves coming from both sides, you get dead enemies spiraling right next to live ones making the rounds. i run into this shit all the time.

on a side note: i really need to find hard copies of Grindstormer, Wings of Wor, Twin Hawk, and Twin Cobra (i likes me some Toaplan lately ).
I have no sig whatsoever.

Just got Hellfire in the post this morning. Gonna put it side by side with the arcade version in a bit to see how it compares.

Some pretty good shooters in no particular order: (Yes, I know I left some out. ;) ) Thunderforce 3, 4, MUSHA Aleste, Truxton / Tetsujin, Steel Empire, Fire Shark, Elemental Master, Bio Hazard Battle, Aero Blasters, Hell Fire, Gaiares, Grind Stormer. These are all worth picking up in my opinion. Great games.

Personally I don't like Keio at all. Typical japanese character design, cheesy anime music and flawed gameplay. Depends what you compare it to, and your taste, ofcourse, but I'd say it's generally unimpressive.

If you like the original Space Invaders, then you might enjoy SI90/91 (same game, different region, IIRC), I don't. ;)

BTW. What's with all the laughing? What's so funny about these games? :)

Well, personally I'd say it has great character design, ridiculously happy and catchy music, and the gameplay is very fun and intersting. The levels are well designed too with lots of different enemies and bizarre stuff constantly going on - never a dull moment.
Whether or not you like this game really depends mostly on how cool you are with the japanese cute 'em up style. If you have a PC-Engine and like games such as Star Parodier, Magical Chase and Coryoon you will definitely love Keio as well.

It's actually not that uncommon. I paid about $20 for my copy (japanese version). Keio will be a lot harder to find, it's probably the most expensive Mega CD shmup.

There was one rare Sega CD shooter that I loved. It's called Android Assault a.k.a Bani Arm. The game is so rare on the Sega CD, that it's cheap!! If you want a good shoother, get that one. Release in US and Japan.

Alien Soldier and Contra The Hard Corps are locked. Don't know of any scrolling shooters other than Crying that have region protection. I think they're all fine to play.

Yeah, I heard this too. Actually, it gives a message when you play on other regions besides the region the game is from on emulators, so I assume that it does have region protection. There is a Game Genie code to bypass the locking, though.

I'm actually planning to get this game soon, but I've seen no indication why the PCE version would be so much better than the MD one. Can you eviscerate?
