new project: 100 PC Engine games in 10 minutes video!

Post by greg »

I've started working on a 3rd 100 Super Famicom games in 10 minutes video. One other project that I think needs to be done, however, is a 100 PC Engine games in 10 minutes video. I believe I have enough resources to pull it off.

Between my friend Lou (ncc1701p) and myself, I have counted 65 games that were not ported in English (at least not in North America). I'm sure Undamned can come up with several more, and perhaps I can just use the Xbox emulator to record several more games to make it 100.

1943 Kai
Ai Cho Aniki
Akumajo No Dracula
Barunba
Cho Aniki
Coryoon
Cross Weaver
Darius Plus

Final Blaster
Final Soldier

Image Fight
Kiaiden 00
Kyuukyoku Tiger
Mr. Heli No Daibouken

Princess Maker 2
Rayxanber II
Rayxanber III
Steam Hearts
Street Fighter II Champion Edition
Super Raiden
Toilet Kids
Deta Na! Twinbee

Bomberman '94
Moto Roader II
Valkyrie no Densetsu
Rabio Lepus Special
Asuka 120% Maxima
Advanced V.G.
L-Dis
Uchuu Senkan Yamato
Kaze no Densetsu Xanadu
Cobra
Galaxy Fraulein Yuna
Galaxy Fraulein Yuna 2
Side Arms Special 2
Snatcher
Star Parodier
Seirei Senshi Spriggan
Spriggan Mark 2
Zero Wing
Chou Jikyuu Yousai Macross 2036
Chou Jikyuu Yousai Macross Eien no Love Song
Terraforming
Tokimeki Memorial
Doraemon: Nobito no Dorabian Knight
Fushigi No Umi No Nadia
Hellfire S
Blood Gear
Panic Bomber
Mirai Shonan Conan
Yawara!
Langrisser
Ranma ½
Ranma ½: Toraware no Hanayome
Garou Densetsu II
Ginga Fukei Densetsu Sapphire
Kaizou Choujin Shubibinman 3

His list ends at Wonder Momo and the rest are mine. The last one on the list, Shubibinman 3, is a game I'm currently borrowing from undamned. I've double checked Wikipedia and the PC Engine Catalog Project to make sure none of these were ported Stateside. Can anyone spot anything that was released in English? So yeah, I know Side Arms came out domestically, but the one I have listed is Side Arms Special for the CD, so it doesn't count.

*************************************
EDIT: Added Image Fight and Hellfire S from our collections. I overlooked these, bringing our total to 67!

Terraforming was released in the US.

Bomberman '94 and Snatcher were ported to Genesis for the US.

I think we also got a Shubibinman game in North America. At least, I have a Hu-card for it and play it on my Turbo Duo 8)

Oh, wait, that was Shubibinman 2, I think.

Metal Stoker is a must. That game is terrific. F1 Circus is also pretty cool (super fast top-down track-memorizer game). There's also Son Son 2, the Sega ports (Thunder Blade, Outrun), and the Valis games.

I second Liquid Kids. Parasol Stars came out in the US though.

EDIT: I might swap out Moto Roader II for Moto Roader MC since it looks a lot different. Kaze Kiri is also worth considering. And Super Darius II is supposed to be really close to the arcade game (if not unplayably zoomed in :))

Well, we're just pulling from our own collections. I just realized that Image Fight and Hellfire S were omitted, so I've added them now. Can't wait to see what Undamned can contribute to this video.

Good point on Terraforming! The PC Engine Catalog has "Terraforming" and "Syd Mead's Terra Forming". I just did a search for Terraforming and only the Japanese one came up because the American title has a space in the word.

About Bomberman and Snatcher, the point of the video is just to show what was not released for the domestic Turbo Duo. Since neither of those were ported domestically to this console, they shall remain on the list. Terra Forming will be removed, though.

Keep in mind that we're focusing only on games that remained in Japan. The Valis series was ported... oh wait! The first Valis game for the Super CD-Rom wasn't ported! I'll add that from my personal colleciton to the list!

Moto Roader II is in my collection and on-hand. I don't have MC. Apparently only the first Moto Roader game was domesticated.

As for Super Darius II, I think Specineff has that game! I'll add that one to the list of games on-hand.

After UD and Spec names titles they can contribute, I'll have to resort to only HuCard games to add to make the total 100, since it's not like I have CD-ROM games sitting on my Xbox. However, Jon may have some games the rest of us don't have. We'll see.

Again, thanks everyone. Removing Terraforming and adding Image Fight, Hellfire S, Valis I, and Super Darius II, that brings the total on my spreadsheet to 68 total games so far.

Yeah, that cool anime artwork caught my eye, and bought it without knowing a lick about the gameplay/game mechanics or even the knowledge that it was the 2nd one in a series of three reeleased Shubibinman games in it's native land. TTI was wise to leave the ShockMan/Shubibinman anime front cover intact. Cool nevertheless.

The profanity shown in NEC's Hu-Card release of Download is hilarious just for the jaw-dropping shock value alone (but something that the American subsidy of NEC would've omitted if they seriously considered it for a proper stateside release). Very cool opening intro that pays tribute to the classic Blade Runner flick as well.

I've seen the intro to Ane-san before, but I've never played it. That Kaze Kiri game looks amazing, but it goes for a ridonkulous amount of money on eBay! Keep in mind that we're limited to what games we have on-hand when it comes to the CD games. The Super Famicom videos are easy since all of the games are simple roms. CD games, on the other hand, will need an ISO at least. Spec may have resources to find one for Kaze Kiri. Looks fabulous.

Much like English voice acting in the anime industry, graphic design for the covers in the video game industry pulls from the bottom of the barrel. There's no actual talent there and were probably done by some intern the night before it was due 8)

The list has a ton of shmups and several digital comic/text adventure games. There's a lack of platformers and puzzles. Can anyone name a few HuCard examples? Dragon's Egg is an interesting platformer. Any others?

Hihou Densetsu Chris no Bouken is something of a proto-Tomb Raider. Its distinctive spritework and time limit remind me of Chameleon Kid. Best thing about it is probably the music.

There's a lack of platformers and puzzles
Zipang is basically Solomons Key with a new lick of paint

Circus Lido - single screen platform puzzler (pushing it a bit on the puzzle angle perhaps)

Titan perhaps? Puzzley ball guiding game. Spin Pair ? I think that'S Japan only.

I guess theres always Panic Bomberman, Klax, columns, Puyo Puyo CD for Japan only (i think!) puzzle style game

[PC Engine Fan X mode]

Once TTI had gotten some people who didn't have their head up their behind, they decided to stop spending money in "re-designing" the covers of the games for the American market, limiting themselves to change the lettering from Kanji or Kana to roman characters, and maybe slapping the TTI, Duo and Super CD logos over the original covers. This can be seen in later releases like Dungeon Explorer 2 and Lords of Thunder. Quite a nice change from the horrendous covers like that of Red/Last Alert and Final Zone 2, featuring what someone once called "geriatric battle armor".

If they had only decided to focus their energy sooner, the history of the PCE/Duo in America may have been somewhat different.

Greetings,

The Mega Drive Fan S! =^_^=

Also, Ys IV, the Dawn of Ys. That one stayed in Japan.

It was released here, on CD Rom. The voice acting is horrendous, the cover art work execrable, and the gameplay forgettable. Good thing NEC had the bright idea of hiring Working Designs (IIRC) to do the translation for Ys Book 1 and 2, and professional actors the size of Michael Bell and others for that 1989 (!) release.

Ah yes, I seem to remember something about some para-sequel to FZ Senki Axis.
Sorcerian had a PCE Super CD port. Japan only I presume.
Even though the common knowledge is that Metal Gear Solid and Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain brought good voice acting to video games, I must admit US versions of some earlier CD titles fared very well voice-wise. Keio Flying Squadron and Dungeon Explorer II to name two.

Parasol Stars is the most important game released on PC Engine next to Dracula X! This is a fact.

I tried Circus Lido a few nights ago on my hacked Xbox. I really couldn't understand the gameplay at all. I just kept falling. Panic Bomberman is on the list, but Klax was released domestically. I never did get the Puyo Puyo CD game yet. I'd also like to get the Puyo Puyo RPG someday, too.

Somer Assault/Mesopotamia is cool little game that doesn't seem to get enough attention. I have the game as well as quite a few of the crappier shmups (God Panic, etc.) for the system and would be happy to contribute. I didn't see Magical Chase on the list. :(

Same with Somer Assault. I miss the extra scene in the US opening.

Also, some of the more interesting unmentioned sidescroller HuCards I have are:

City Hunter
Etrnal City
Genpei Toma Den Kannoni
Shiryou Sensen War of the Dead (RPG with sidescrolling battles)

How about Martial Champion from Konami and Capcom's own Chiki Chiki Boys, though it wasn't put out by Capcom on the PCE?
