Rayforce - Taito Legends 2

Post by defected78 »

Hi,

How is the emulation of this in taito legends 2 on xbox.

Im thinking of trying to track that down as layer section on saturn to me is better than any Cave shmup. I think most of the taito F3 games were excellent.

Not sure about TL2, but if it's any help, Taito Memories II Joukan (PS2 NTSCJ) has Rayforce emulated in excellent form with customisable controls and tate. Like a lot of good PS2 ports/emulations its graphics are interlaced + filtered, but otherwise the game is arcade perfect.

It's a pretty cheap and common disc even brand new, too, if you get the "Eternal Hits" reprint.

Don't take my word for it, but the XBox version probably uses a modified version of MAME to emulate it, like the PC version does. I'm inferring this from the fact that the PC and XBox versions both have the same set of games--the reason for their game selections being different from the PS2 version originally was that the developer of the PC and XBox versions couldn't get the source code from Taito for all the games so they had to use a different method to emulate/port them (but they also managed to port a few games that Taito themselves couldn't for their PS2 collections). If true, this probably means on the XBox it would be as good as MAME emulation was for it at that time: very accurate emulation except for a few missing effects like the lasers for the stage 3 miniboss. They may have fixed those effects themselves though.

In any case, I'm sure it's very good.
Of course, that's just an opinion.

Despite being terrible at the game, It's definitely one of my all time favorites. Even using all the continues I haven't beat the Saturn version.

Hey BIL (or anyone else in the know),
Is that right about tate? I had the vague memory that none of these collections allowed for vertical screen settings.

The Taito Legends collections, sadly, have no Tate option.

Taito Memories II Joukan & Gekan do have tate, like I've shown in this post. You'll notice you were there for the occasion. ;)

Thanks for that. I thought that we had been over this before, but then why didn't I act on that knowledge at the time? This time I'll be sure to get the game!

If TL2 Xbox is anything like the PC version (safe bet), Rayforce fixed the effects. However, on the PC collection, Elevator Action Returns is an older romset missing the lights out effect when the lights are shot. One interesting thing is that the PC collection makes an empty folder of Syvalion, which suggests that it was planned for that version.

Are you sure that's due to a ROMset issue and not incomplete emulation? I've never actually seen the lights-out effect, and I've checked several ROMsets in addition to my own Taito Legends 2 ROMset.

Rayforce isn't on Taito Legends 2, you're thinking of Raystorm.

Rayforce is indeed available in the Xbox/PC version of Taito Legends 2, but not in the PS2 version of that release.

RayForce is on the XBOX version? I need to get this now.. I was pretty disappointed it wasn't on the US PS2 release (still a great collection though).

I'm pretty sure it does not on Taito Legends 2. Perhaps Taito Memories version (handled by a different developer) is more accurate.

Yeah, EA's light/dark effect works fine in Taito Memories I Joukan. There's also no glitch making it impossible to use a focused MAX beam in Metal Black.

I'm referring to the PS2 version. Whether the multiple reports from this thread are correct or not, TM1 Joukan has neither the Metal Black nor Elevator Action Returns issues. I've never seen it produce graphical errors in Runark/Growl, either.

The lights out does work on the US PS2 version (played it multiple times), but the rapid fire weapons don't rapid fire like they should.

Hum... PAL version outputs 60 Hz and should be essentialy the same, but maybe the ROMs are different and work differently with the emulator indeed. I didn't play it that much, but lights out didn't seem to work for me the way it works in the Saturn port (according to the YouTube vid I looked up).

I have Taito Legends 2, and the game title screen shows as Elevator Action II, rather than Elevator Action Returns. I'll also confirm that the Elevator Action II lights out effect works on the PS2 version of Taito Legends 2.

Watching both the game attract mode and also play testing the first level--it's different from the first Elevator Action game in that only the floor where the lights were shot goes out and then the lights also go back on after a couple of seconds.

Are there mulitple versions of Taito Legends 2 for the PS2? I have Taito Legends 2 and the box codes on the edge show SLUS 21349 NTSC U/C.

Perhaps PAL version has the ROM dumped off the European PCB. Elevator Action II is the American title.

Buying Taito Legends 2 for my PS2 was one of the best video game investments I ever made (solely for an almost arcade-perfect G. Darius, which is much better than the PSX version). But back on topic, RayForce plays great in TL2 (PS2), but I would rather play my Saturn copy any day of the year. That's just me.

TL2 PS2 has Raystorm, not Rayforce.
