Entertaining, sure. It's just that once the voting lulz are over, you might be stuck playing a worse game for 20+ hours... not sure if it's really worth it.
DMC wrote:If three good games make it to the voting, a bad game can't win it.
If the organizers can come up with three games every week that would all be good for STGT, great. Although that's going to become increasingly harder unless we start allowing repeats (which might not be a bad idea after a few years).

Keep in mind that as a non-participant my opinion is irrelevant anyway. :)

So they make some of the superplays straight in arcades? I was naively thinking they were done in the privacy of the players' quiet home (if they can find space for a screen in there), and not in an actual arcade!

Holy crap that's the guy with the dodonpachi world record. I hope you went and spoke to him!
No, I always leave these guys alone. The only thing I would ask WTN would be to release his DonPachi replays, but I imagine he would decline. He doesn't have a real great reputation in terms of being a friendly guy.

Clover-TAC is a nice guy though.

This particular arcade is not exactly noisy or packed with people. Very quiet, very small, but all business. They proudly display the current records that were set there (everything from Tetris to Deathsmiles) with trophies from various fighting game events on the walls.

The one time I saw a recording in action, they had a black curtain up covering the cab so no one could see. Considering there was absolutely no one else there it felt a bit excessive, but I guess there may be some legalities. I'm not sure if any of the actual Cave DVDs are shot there, but I think maybe some of the smaller publications do.

Games played 4 or more years ago should be on the table, for sure.

Why? There's a ton of games we haven't played yet, and STGT is all about discovering underplayed gems. Worse yet, if we allow repeats, there's a chance we have to play Dangun Fucking Feveron again. I don't know if I could really endure that.

I know I'd rather pound my nuts flat with a wooden mallet, than play that damn game again.

There are tons of games we haven't played yet, but without repeats the average game quality is bound to decrease over time. It's got to be hard picking games that are relatively obscure yet still fun and competition worthy; hidden gems are inherently rare. Casually perusing old voting threads, it looks like a lot of games that got second place have already been played.

One other thing is that the STGT roster has changed quite a bit since '06, and some people miss some weeks for various reasons, so old repeats wouldn't truly be repeats to a good percentage of players.

Having said all that, new games are better than old games as long as quality doesn't suffer. So this may be totally irrelevant if dex (or whoever) has a decent backlog for future STGTs (come on Gunbird 2).

As for Feveron, that was already played twice within the past few years, so I think that would be at the very bottom of anybody's list even if repeats were being considered.

I'm guessing some of those guys around since the 90's must be getting a bit old now as well, are there people there that are into their 40's still grinding out the clears?

Oh cool, I wonder if that's how the tatsujin videos on 2dx 6th Style CS were recorded. I always wondered where/in what sort of environment they were actually recorded.

I'm pretty sure Konami had those in a private location. For their participation, Konami compensated them only for the train tickets and with a meal...

But anyways, sikraiken could go through each hi-score thread and pick each of them apart if he so chose.

What I would encourage him to do, however, would be to go after some Japanese scores (in other words, pick on someone your own size). There are a number of great Western players in our midst, but few come close to hanging with the elite.

So sik, if you ever do get the urge to chase a score, come on down to Tokyo and I'll take you to one of the better arcades that takes scores for Arcadia and even records some official DVDs there. Last time I was there, SOF-WTN was beating the tar out of Raiden Fighters 2.
Thanks, one day I'd like to. I have trouble staying focused on one game for a long enough time to get that good, though. I get bored easily, but hopefully it'll happen eventually. I think SOF-WTN could be spending his time on a better game. :P

It's interesting to hear you say that too since it seems to be a pretty common complaint (almost a meme on the Touhou channel)... encouraging people to focus on something might be the best thing about STGT, but one week is obviously not enough still :| So any particular goals you'd like to shoot for?

DonPachi arcadia record. I don't really care about anything else nearly as much.

Good luck! And speaking of intricacies, I can only hope you won't fall prey to the Donpachi curse and not release a video when you get near the record :P

Somewhat surprising to hear, but that would be more than enough for me :P I'm grateful they recorded them, the AGOP videos, Take it Easy in particular, were huge motivation for me when I was starting out playing. I'm sure they played no small part in helping me go as far as I have.

It's gotta be complex. I could see some serious effort going into maintaining those chains that break in milliseconds =P. I'm sure there are some really amazing shenanigans that go into prolonging the chains into longer segments of the level.

Is it possible to full chain any of the DonPachi stages?

Not a chance, there are long breaks in all of them.
