What's your highest score on either route?Illyrian wrote:p.s. I've put a fair number of hours in Radiant Silvergun to try and make myself like it as I'd heard how awesome it was. Oh boy here we go!!
Someone making the time honoured internet argument of "if you've not scored at least 90% of the world record you don't know what you're talking about!"
D'aww it's like being back arguing about Final Fantasy games on gamefaqs in 1999!!
Hang on, I'll bust out the good old "my dad could beat up your dad because my dad know's kung fu!" argument and we can REALLY get this thread going!
I've never 1cc'd it i'll say that, but I forced myself to put 30-35 hours into it to try and force myself to like it, and just ended up hating it. The design of some, but not all the boss fights was all I liked about it. Also the sentence "Be attitude for gains" is by far and away one of the best sentences in video game history.
Good shmups grab you from the word go, and even though you're rubbish at them to begin with compel you to play on. The games I mentioned before are all good examples of this. Even now I'm rubbish at Ketsui and haven't finished it yet, but I'll sure as hell keep going until I have. I don't need to brag about scores or use them as some yardstick to value how much someone knows about a game because the game is so damn good.
Maybe you should try actually making a proper argument rather than just posting pithy sentences? Just a thought man, as a mature 27 year old I'm here to help. I'm guessing from your posting attitude you're....14-15?

lol I asked for a score not your life story.
Point is; RS isn't the most accessible game in the world, I'm sure most people will be turned off by it when they buy the XBLA version. As I said, it's for good players, scorers who really put the time in to learn the game. You don't strike me as that type.

A wild guess, but it seems to me like it plays like a vertically scrolling Thunder Force game, only with a weird scoring system.

Except that TF is much easier (at least 3&4 are)
But the weapon thingy is similar, although scoring is required to level your weapons.

D'oh hohohohohohohoho!!
So we're still going with the "you must suck at the game" argument huh?
I'll never get tired of the rampant furore Radiant Silvergun fans will throw out at everyone who dares to insult their perfect game!
"B...b...b...but he must be terrible at the game...he didn't like it! BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAWWWWWWWWWWW!"
Give me a second and I'll call a whaaaambulance for you.
Here's the thing. Radiant Silvergun isn't actually that hard compared to a proper shmup like Dodonpachi, Muchi Muchi Pork or Dimahoo. It just goes on for far too long, and since the game never actually gets much harder after about the 4th level it's just a slog through copy pasted levels with bland design and dull bosses. Most of your game overs in RSG are down to being so bored with the game that you actually lose the ability to concentrate properly. You suddenly realise you've been playing the shmup for 1 hour and it's still not over.
Any good shmup has a proper difficulty curve that keeps the experience snappy and fun, constantly pushing you with different challenges, but at the same time not being padded out at all and remaining fresh.
Radiant Silvergun fails at this utterly, and the sooner you silly RSG fanboys realise this, the sooner you can get on with your lives and play some proper shmups. I'd recommend starting your re-education in the shmup genre with Dodonpachi and working from there. It's not 75 minutes long, and actually has good gameplay.
No need to thank me, I'm here to help.

Man, I hate RSG and agree with most of the points you've brought up, but you're making yourself look like a fool here. Nobody just glancing at this conversation is going to side with you or take anything you're saying seriously because instead of making points and stating opinions you're just sort of raging like an insane person. The ridiculous overreaction for someone simply asking for a score from you pretty much makes his point for him. Reading your posts almost makes me want to like RSG, and that's saying something
I'm not sure I'd ever compare it to TF because I really like those games. Enough that if there was any appreciable similarity between them and RSG I may be able to find at least some little aspects of it to enjoy. I've never found the TF games to feel sluggish or drawn out in any way, the pacing is part of what got me into the games despite usually having a harder time enjoying horis.

Re: Shmups that were not worth your money.
I didn't think TF3 had good pacing. Practically slept through the game and cleared it on one credit.
Even in the fourth game I think I got to stage 6 on my first try. I did like that one a bit more though

Re: Shmups that were not worth your money.
Granted, when I think about the series I'm mostly thinking of 4. It's not incredibly difficult by any means, but I find it very enjoyable to play and look at (TF4 really blew me away initially with its use of parallax). I spent a lot less time with 3, I remember some cool parts but I guess overall it was slower than 4, and certainly didn't look as nice.dunpeal2064 wrote:I didn't think TF3 had good pacing. The thing is, people who's answer to any criticism of their favourite game is "what's YOUR score?" don't deserve the respect of a proper answer Deca.Deca wrote:Man, I hate RSG and agree with most of the points you've brought up, but you're making yourself look like a fool here. I do understand what you're with regards to how I may come across but really come on, what always happens when you point out flaws with RSG is that the fanboys come out in force and slate whoever has made the criticism without ever actually refuting the points you have made.
Therefore, I find it difficult to take the fanboys seriously. Glad to see from this thread that there are other people who also don't think that RSG is the best game ever.
p.s I'm not actually mad, or overreacting, I just find the RSG defence force in this thread hilarious.

Is there a version of MAME yet that runs RSG smoothly?
I'd like to get a high score on it so I can proudly claim it stinks without fear of reprisal.

Everyone seems to think that TFIII is super easy. I like it but find it kind of frustrating. I always get hit by something that I didn't see coming or some really fast laser. It's kind of embarassing because everyone says it's easy, but it's not to me.dunpeal2064 wrote:I didn't think TF3 had good pacing. Practically slept through the game and cleared it on one credit.

I have to agree on the TFIII comment from burgerkingdiamond, and I actually thought I was one of the very few that find this game even ... hard ?
The only game I have cleared that I can compared it to is Super R-Type and I find R-Type much easier than ThunderForceIII, past level 3 it's unforgiving

Count me as another guy who finds TF3 hard, though that's mostly because I find it very annoyingly designed and don't have much motivation to try to clear it when I could be playing something less bland and which has an actual scoring system.

I'm calling it now, I've dragged everyone down to my level, and that's really...really...low.
Also Jamestown also didn't run very well on my compy and I have a 2 gig graphics card, I5 proc and 4 gigs of DDR 3 ram. It didn't make sense to me either. Gameplay was quite good though!

Re: Shmups that were not worth your money.
Have you ever played RS for score? There is only one stage where you have to kill exclusively blue enemies. Other than that it's all about the red ones. At the end of some stages you can finish it off with the special chain (red-blue-yellow) and continue with the yellows.dunpeal2064 wrote:You don't have to only kill reds, you get a bonus for going from a red chain to one blue, and then picking up a yellow chain. Yellow enemies have a higher point value too.
These are rare exceptions however. In 98% of the situations you have to shoot the red enemies only.
Oh and btw, most games get better the better you are at them. If you stick with an awesome game and keep playing it for years, it'll be the best game ever....for you. I'd say that one should stick to a game (especially if we're talking about shmups) first, even if he didn't fall in love with it at first sight. You might miss out on something if you quit too soon.
I absolutey hated Battle Garegga when I first played it and put it back on the shelf. Years later I decided to play it again and suddenly I couldn't stop.

I don't like RSG myself, but the weapon balancing is amazing. Stages are plodding, yes, but boss battles are fun and make use of interesting patterns.Illyrian wrote:And yet, no-one has refuted any of the criticisms i made about RSG, instead resorting to petty name calling!

The only really ridiculous thing that you've posted so far is that the final boss is easy. What the hell? Xiga's final pattern is hard as hell, and the Stone-Like is a bit of a dick.
Re: Shmups that were not worth your money.
I don't know what to say man, even when I did a credit feed through to him the only pattern I found hard was the one where he floods the screen with orange orbs. The rest I found very easy, and it's not like I'm 2-all'ing ketsui in my spare time here.
Edit: I'll add that I found often with the bosses if you were able to destroy their extra parts where applicable without dying or anything silly the main segment of the bosses was a very easy challenge.
Also I'd be interested to know what you felt about the level, I think it's level 4 where you chase the boss through tunnels and turn left and right, and then the boss chases you. I really hated it and thought it was very poorly designed personally, I mean you're playing a shmup, not getting chased by a polar bear in Crash Bandicoot!

PS2 Ibara. It causes me physical eye strain to play that game, due to those semi-transparent spinning bullet things. I can adjust my eyes to Battle Garegga bullets, but these I can't handle at all. It seriously ruins my enjoyment of the game.
And that's before we take into consideration the ridiculous price the game sells for these days. I'm really glad I made it "not worth my money" before it got out of control.
