The later games are terrible because there was no attention toward pacing put into them. You're low on ammo always, you spend a lot more time stuck on a single screen than in the earlier games, and the background remains largely homogeneous throughout a stage. In short, you don't feel like you're going anywhere.

3 is just too damn long. Aside from that, it deserves to exist.

I was ready to defend that thing: "get in close and hack up zombies!", "screen-killing blood vomit grenade!", "fire-breathing mammoth slug!".

So I played it.

It's actually even less enjoyable if you take the side route. You don't get to keep the slug for the (long, tiresome) boss fight. If you don't take a risk and have the thing kill zombies by stomping them to death, it takes a long time to get out of the cave. The mammoth isn't even a mammoth, it's a stupid elephant!

But defend it I shall. "At least it's better than the entirety of Metal Slug 5."
PSX Vita: Slightly more popular than Color TV-Game system. Almost as successful as the Wii U.

MS3's second boss isn't very long if you conserve grenades during the stage and take advantage of a simple trick. Let the last scientist zombie transform you, kill him, blood-bomb the aliens, change back and then grenade the fuck out of everything. It's not hard to get there with ~30 stocked and end the whole affair in a minute or so.

That's a nice tactic I would like to try. I always die atleast once at that damn 2nd boss.

Demonstration

Since the player (Mike Uyama) is speedrunning, he doesn't spend the time needed for the hidden POWs inside the ice cave entrance, one of whom gives even more grenades (blow the door open, then wait a bit for them to come out).

It's actually way faster and easier to beat the boss entirely as a zombie (the XBLA version even gives you an achievement for it)
And indeed it is the intended way of doing it as there are at least 4 safe spots in the arena that allows you to spew on the 2nd phase all you want. 8)

Think about why people are taking these measures to kill this boss more quickly. It's not because it has such deadly attacks that shortening the fight increases your survival... in fact, the second phase's pattern is so easy to dodge until the timer runs down, you'd need to tie a goat to your face to make it a challenge. No, people want the zombie form to shorten this part because it's so damn boring.

At least you get a reward for enduring that snooze-fest: a crappier version of In the Hunt. Hooray!

I remembered when ms3 was still available at a local arcade. Getting past the 2nd boss gained me a few interested spectators behind me. By the time i cleared the 4th boss, there was a small crowd. And at the final battle with Rootmarks, everyone around the cab was watching intensely.

I would say ms3 outdid the sequels in epic and style, though being the hardest so far I played.

Zombie bomb was fun until you reach the escape part of the mothership, then it really hits you: don't think only humans love it, even the AI does!
This is my signature. It's so unique, nobody else has it.

That last stretch in MS 3, is epic, but insanely hard. Space zombies, are the worst kind. And those damn aliens!

But it's so cool.

Metal Slug 1 is a better hi-score experience in my life and I have played about 600 arcade games. Tons of different strategies, secrets pattern, and 1.000 pts cannon trick is the base of the scoring pattern in the game (this is missed in other slug games). There are dangerous pattern and advanced techniques not available in actual mame replay or video in you tube.

Because there are multiple ways in each stage to obtain more points (more of other slugs), this game is the best slug for score until now.

Old WR has been defeated in august. Maybe in november will be possible see a first score 3.300.000 over.
