Opinions on some 3DO games?...

Post by dave4shmups »

I have a 3DO, and the first game in the Shockwave series, and I was wondering how Shockwave Assault for the PS1 compares in terms of control, and overall difficulty level. I have a Panasonic-brand 3DO controller for my 3DO, and I don't have any problems with the controls in this game-but IGN's original review claims that the controls for Shockwave Assault on the PS1 are terrible. Is that true?

I also have Novastorm (which I LOVE!) for the 3DO, and am also curious as to how it plays and looks on the PS1.

I am VERY interested in Phoenix 3, which looks like part Contra-style run and gun, and part Wing Commander.

Novastorm running on a Pentium 100 powered PC with Win95 OS wasn't too shabby. Super fluid framerate, especially in low-res format (when it was considered vogue to have PC games running with some FMV footage back in the day). Even came with a free embroidered NS badge as a bonus (something that the NS console ports didn't get).

That's cool! So, how about Shockwave Assault? I can't imagine the controls being horrible for this game on the PS1, unless they were severely jacked up during the port from the 3DO.

I beat both Shockwave games in 94-95 on 3DO and they controlled the same.

Never played it on PS1.
This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

That's a great feat! The first game is so hard, even on the easiest difficulty setting, IMO! But I enjoy it quite a bit. Overall, I really love the 3DO's game library-although it's a shame that there were no shmups developed for the system. As I wrote above, I'm really curious about Phoenix 3 and Creature Shock-I've been told that the controls for both games are poor, but they both look like really fun games.

Total Eclipse is almost a shmup ;)

I still have a small but serviceable 3D0 library myself but nothing mentioned here is in it...I may have to hunt down Phoenix 3 tho...
<@scootnet> if you were a real gamer, you could jerk it to Super Metroid box art

Well, here's a video of Shockwave Assault on the PS1: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EpSTY0a4Dk8 I don't like this as much, the sky is totally black for one thing, not blue like the 3DO version. I think I'll stick with that one.

So, does Shockwave Assualt for the PS1 have more difficulty settings then Shockwave on the 3DO? Because on the 3DO, it's insanely hard even on the lowest setting-cadet, I believe.
