GP - I think your setup there is better than 9/10 of any 'room of doom'...clean and simple, ground level. I just recall that you made that stick a long time ago, and was a bit baffled why the lone pic now.

Here's one of mine:

It's using Seimitsu LS-32 for the stick, PS-14-GX for the buttons. The extra PS-14-D button on the front is for "coin".

A Plexi-glass one i did a while ago, never use it though because i find it to sticky and clammy when i start to sweat.

Hey, great mods, guys!

Oxtu: I made a blue one a while back... it was much crappier though. Only 4 buttons, and was barely held together. THis time, I soldered straight to the terminal, did 6 buttons, etc... although I got the square and circle done backwards. :/

Do you have any pictures of the guts of yours? I'm going to Japan next month... thinking of picking up some Seimitsu stuff while I'm there, just to give it a fair shot. I was also wanting to do a Super Gun/PS compatible one. I've got the parts, just get off my ass and do it.
My wife absolutely HATES me soldering. She thinks I'll give both of us lead poisoning (she's a bit paranoid...about everything). No garage, so I have to do it in the house.

Dave K: No, it's not really the comfortable, but I have really no other option. If I could make/buy some sort of stand to put the controller about stomach level, I would put the TV on TOP of the metal stand. That would be optimal for me (other than getting a cab up on the 39th floor, which ain't possible).

Ex_Mosquito: I bought some lexan and shit, but haven't cut it yet. I even have the plate designed. Again... just gotta get off my ass and do it and shut the wife up for a few hours while doing so. What'd you use to paint your other one?

Neither. Dreamcast Direct Super Black Model. (LE Japanese one -- the whole thing is black... even the controller).

I've this one:

which is a Seimitsu stick with Sanwa buttons. Unmodified internally, it's just for DC usage.

To be honest I find the stick too short so it's just as well I've also an all-Sanwa version in pink which is wired up to a DB15. I use this one for all shmupping (supergun/PS1/2/SS/DC/PCE).

I also did up a Hori SS stick some time back but alas it's no better off than as it started, and I'm still waiting to come across a red or yellow ball top for it.

How much would I have to spend to do that to the dreamcast stick?
buy the stick get the seimitsu parts and fit em?

I'm not too sure where you'd find seimitsu sticks to be honest, but they shouldnt go for more than 20-25 USD, buttons no more than 3 USD a piece, possibly less.

Other than that if you put one together as cheap as possible you can get by with pliers, a screwdriver, a stanley knife, a hand drill, a soldering iron and some solder along with some wire, 4 screws and 4 nuts. All that should come to around to maybe another 50 USD.

Then actual DC sticks in good condition may go for anywhere between 25 - 55 USD

Get the parts a stick and buttons. Buy DC arcade stick.

Open it up cut that base panel back file it, screw stick in and solder the correct cables then same for the buttons piece it back together and you've got a custom stick?

Is it really much better than the standard DC stick? I tried to play dreamcast yesterday after 2 months on saturn with sat pad and it felt awful in comparison.

Apologies if My question sounds stupid just never tried to make a stick before and I want to do it properly.

What button size fits the DC stick?

On a sidenote -- how the heck do you get a DC stick to work with a PS2? I've built an adapter which works fine as long as I don't move diagonally -- if I do the stick goes crazy.

I've asked about this before, and people just say "you have to cut the ground to the DC PCB". How exactly do you do this? Since I'm a newbie, I would appreciate all the help I can get. Could someone perhaps supply some pictures? Thanks.

The way you get these to work on a PS2 is that you rip out everything, put in a cheap Playstation controller PCB, and solder the connections that PCB, effectively making it a Playstation controller (which works on PS2). Thinking of doing a step-by-step tutorial one day. Quite a few people ask about this mod.

The sad thing is the Ageteck, despite being a piece of shit, is expensive in the states. They run about $5 apiece in Japan.

But isn't it possible to have the stick still work on the DC as well? I was under the impression that you can put a switch to turn the DC ground on/off...

Same here, I used an old psx digital pad for my converter box as I had one spare.

Luckily every PS2 shmup I've tried with it has supported this (i.e. they support original non-Dual-Shock pads). There are plenty of other games that don't support it unfortunately and I always dread that that next shmup to come along will force me to make another.

Essentially yes, it's not at all complicated it just takes time. I'd advise a rainy day spent in front of the TV as it takes forever to cut all the bits with hand tools.

You can do this mod for either the DC (much easier -- just hot-melt the Sanwa harness wires to the DC harness... I've got a chart if anyone needs it). There are very good PS to DC controller converters on the market for $10, so I always thought having a DC only controller was kind of a waste of space/time.

In fact, I have a modded (stick only) one for the DC if anyone wants it. It has the same buttons in it it, and of course the VMU still works.

Hi.

Ive been wanting to mod a stick for awhile now. I have a few Agetech sticks laying around, so i think im going to try it.

im thinking the most simple way to start is by just making this a ps2 compatible stick (and then using an adapter for DC/PC, etc.), is this a good idea?

i have looked at Tychom.org's page, so that gives me a good start.

the buttons seem like they would be simple enough to mount, and i think id be able to figure out how to get the stick in there easy enough, but my problem is trying to figure out what to solder where using the psx PCB.

does anyone know where i can find a diagram of what connections go where to solder?

are there psx pads that would be easier to use then others? i heard some of the pads have very small connect points that might be difficult to solder. its been awhile since ive soldered anything, but im willing to give it a shot!

id appreciated it if anyone can point me in the right direction here. once i start actually doing this im sure ill have more questions to post (and some pics eventually).

go to the shoryuken.com forums (hardware). There's mountains of information in there. That's where I got just about everything. Match that with the information in the link I posted above (the Japanese page). The pictures will help. The key is getting the joystick harness soldered into the right spot. Since the column in the Agetec will get in the way, the tutorial I used twists it 45 degrees. As such, the standard directions don't apply. After the rotation, the proper connections are:

UP: Orange
DOWN: Red
LEFT: Yellow
RIGHT: Blue
GROUND: Black

damn, i did it!

i hit a few snags (all my doing), but i actually have a perfectly functioning PS2 Agetech stick.

thanks a bunch for the links in this thread. now i need to take the next step and actually replace the stick and buttons with real parts.

it was pretty easy using the dualshock hack and wiring it to my DC stick. i used the links in this thread and they pretty much cover the basics. try it out and ask any questions if you have them.
