CPS2 Cart DOA - General Questions

Post by CulDad78 »

I received a CPS2 cart (SF Alpha / US Blue) that is dead. Quite sure the suicide battery has gone on it.

What I am wanting to know is if it is possible to find the security stickers that were used over the Torx Screws on these carts? Basically, the board is dead (for now) however, if those stickers are not available after-market, then I can know for a fact that this board has never been opened - as the security stickers (that cover the actual screws) are fully intact.

Thus no one has messed with it and assuming the battery hasn't leaked all over the board, this can be brought back to life?

If you have a 100% working CPS2 A&B set, then it's generally recommended to do a sucide battery mod/hack so it'd allow you to install a replacement battery at your convienence/leisure...is known as the CPS2 Keystone battery mod. I had both my Japanese region Mars Matrix and Progear No Arashi boards done with this cool battery replacement mod courtesy of shmupper oxtsu. With a replacement battery, it's an average of 5 to 6 years before it needs replacing again. They both haven't bit the dust yet despite having their original suicide batteries removed back in 2008 (they were still installed on day one from the factory and still were working about six to seven years -- but your mileage may vary, of course).

There's a guy on ebay that has a crapload of CPS2/Capcom stuff and sells those seals occasionally. I thought about picking some up, but then you'd just have to take them off again in a few years to change the battery :?

Yeah, I figured on doing that most likely, but was hoping to have at least 2 carts that needed the operation to make the shipping part from the (US) to make sense.

Good to know - so it is entirely possible this board has been accessed before, hopefully not, but it is possible.

Thanks all -

You only send razoola the roms anyway, not the whole boards :)

I know - but to track a package from the US to FIN it has to go USPS Priority International - $14 one way is the absolute cheapest rate. Return ship would likely be cheaper - but the idea is w/USPS international to fill these flat boxes w/as much as you can - I'd pay the same shipping on 1 set of roms as I would on 10 sets.

This is the USPS calculator for an 8oz package (roughly the weight of a small empty box) from US to FIN.
http://ircalc.usps.gov/MailServices.asp ... =6&p=0&o=8

The first class option does not include tracking / confirmation / insurance - all other options are $14 min.

You don't really need to pay all this. Someone in the US can just burn a couple of chips for you and ship them for $2. Does it give a dark green screen when it boots up?

Tsk - at least support the person who worked it out.

Interesting. I've heard more of the opposite view, people bitching that he profits from Capcom's work and emulation authors. Either way, I don't care. Send to Finland...

the way i look at it is if it wasn't for raz there'd be a crap ton of dead games out there. he's done everyone a favor and he deserves a couple bucks for it. i've read that he won't bother working on cps-3 encryption because of all the people using his cps-2 code without authorization.

and if capcom weren't a bunch of idiots putting suicide batteries on there boards, we wouldn't have these problems. i never could figure out the point.

to the OP, there are other people who can burn you the phoenix roms you need, so sending them to razoola isn't the only option. iirc channelmaniac does them and he sends raz payment each time he uses the code. might want to send him a PM asking about it.

And if Capcom hadn't made them in the first place, there would have been nothing for him to work on, and if there was no emulation 10 years ago, he wouldn't have looked at XORs in the first place, and he has already made thousands in money and boards from his work. If you want to pay him indefinitely for hacking up someone else's games, you're entitled to, but it's not a couple of bucks, and hacking someone else's game doesn't make you the copyright owner of the hacked code.

Cool, thank you - and that sounds pretty legit.

He won't work on CPS3 because it's SH2 and not 68000 - pretty much.
