Any good doujin platformers?

Post by Moniker »

I've played Rosenkreutzstillette, which is awesome apart from the passwords-in-lieu-of-saves thing. It doesn't seem to take screenshots, so I've been meaning to try out MM4 passwords, as I hear they work.

Also, Nezumi Man (I have a thing for Megaman, so what?). Dunno if that's doujin or indie, as my working definition of doujin is "has a glossy menu interface similar to Touhou).

I'm sure there are plenty of good ones out there. Anyone familiar with the scene?

Mmm, let me think... Dreadlock is more like a run 'n' gun. Same with Gigantic Army.

You have that Touhou one done by Tasogare Frontier, MegaMari. An ultra-hard Megaman clone. Then you have Toki No Akuma, created by icewind, the author of Diadra Empty. It's more like a puzzler-plataformer with a Gradius-like power up system. Showed some hints of what would later become Diadra Empty. Pedo Bear included as a boss. I wish I was kidding, lol.

Maybe Crescent Pale Mist too?

I'm pretty sure there is also a couple more Megaman clones flying around. There is also the Megaman FPS done with the Doom engine. Totally offtopic but hilariously awesome nevertheless.

I have Toki No Akuma and I haven't been able to get it to run :( I got Diadra Empty to run...but not that :(

Lilithrottle is pretty good but not a standard platformer.

Vampire Castle is kind of interesting but a bit on the light side...it's from the guys that did Zillion Beatz.

I can vouch for Gigantic Army and Dreadlock. Armed 7 isn't bad either...same style.

There are the touhou Castlevanias too....umm... Koumajou Densetsu I and II. I haven't managed to get them to run either tho *sigh*

Bunny Must Die, by PlatineDispositif, best doujin platformer I've played.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WDTCwo_YciU

Maid to the right, or zangyura, is a classic Castlevania tribute, also by PlatineDispositif:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Bkt8fbWoSI

Good luck with the controls in this one though, they're very difficult to work with.

Koumajyou II is also worth checking out, it's pretty short though. Don't bother with the first game, it's pretty bad.

To solve those issues see if you can turn all your settings to japanese. That's how I made Toki No Akuma work properly, it refused to run on my filthy gaijin western settings (this was later corrected in Diadra Empty). This will also save you headaches if you happen to face udm patcher files, which are a pain in the rear to deal with as well.

Oh, yeah, Bunny Must Die too and what everyone else said. Dunno how much of a platformer Fairy Bloom Freesia is but we could drop that too. I think it's more like a hack 'n' slash.

Then there is this one called Blood Over too where you have a maid with an oversized machinegun assist you.

What? I heard the 2nd game is even easier than the 1st one already was, so I didn't bother. Did they actually fix the yawn inducing difficulty or am I missing something?

I can't comment on the difficulty, but it's better in almost every other regard: better art, music, story, characters, environment, attacks, spells, character movement, and so on. I have no reason to ever play the first game again.

I enjoyed this as well. It's practically a Castlevania romhack, but it's fairly fun for the couple hours that it lasts. The presentation in particular is really good, with great artwork and professional seiyuus doing the voice work. It's pretty impressive for a doujin game.

I was actually checking out doujin platformers some time ago, but didn't find anything terribly impressive that I didn't previously know about. Dash! Sakuya-san looks to be a pretty interesting take on the genre, though.

Bunny Must Die is indeed fun stuff. Still haven't finished it, I got stuck in some time-bending room, should get back to it. I also bought both Koumajous and played the sequel a few times, but couldn't beat the second (or third?) boss...ahem. Couldn't dodge dem bullits.

Still waiting for Rosenkreuzstilette Freudenstachel...

La Mulana is pretty amazing. I'm guessing mentioning Cave Story is redundant?

The difference between doujin and indie is, afaict, 'made in japan' and 'made outside japan'. There are a ton of good indie platformers.

This is more or less true, of course. But I imagine indies are better known and there are approximately a billion easily available sites out there covering them, while information about doujins in English - or even pictures or videos of the games - can still be hard to come by. It was safe to assume Moniker was asking about japanese indies rather than western doujins.

Super Marisa World FTW

idiotic design (SLIPPERY controls) and ridiculous levels (heck one level even requires you to exploit a bug of sorts to reach a certain area) make it actually one of the best & most memorable platformers I've stumbled upon, much better than some Cave Story shit

really challenging too

Oh man, I've actually played a bit Super Marisa World. I fire it up whenever I feel like failing hardcore and doing further damage to my logitech gamepad (reserved exclusively for rage-damage purposes) and pride.

And yeah, Ghegs has the right of it. About 9/10 indie games are platformers... I tend to vacillate b/w those, roguelikes, and shmups. This is one corner I haven't really explored yet - apart from the rare occasion when a doujin game is covered by an indie site. Thanks for all the recs, btw. :D

I can add one more that's pretty good: Hydra Castle Labyrinth. There's an english patch for it too. It's sorta-kinda like a shorter, more action-focused La Mulana. The japanese name is meikyu or something.

All of the above are good suggestions.

touhou yuen senki is a mega man type game, its a tad rough around the edges and is aimed at skilled megaman players who are good at jumping on moving platforms. IIRC you cant get a game over, if you run out of lives youre back to starting hub and can use warps to get yourself to the area you want. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C5qdTMpNQKA

The circle Gatling Cat have a number of platformers to their name

If you love platforming with a shmuppy twist try mystical chain http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zYesnQoD ... re=related

This game is a new take on Super Mario 2 (US) mechanic of throwing enemies. Heres a old video of mine, Please ignore the dire platforming  the vid is only ment show off the game http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nWyvZ4_L ... ideo_title

If you havnt yet played Crescent Pale Mist I would recommend you check out the PS3 version (or wait for it (possibly) coming to steam) The original had balancing issues imo, Ive heard that Rockin Android localisation tweaked the gameplay. What has been tweaked im unsure, best ask someone who has played both versions.

Oh and pick up Carpe Fulgurs Fortune Summoners when it hits steam in the next month or two

While not a doujin, I still recommend Gun Girl 1 and Gun Girl 2. G1 is more platforming, G2 is more killing hoards of zombies, both are great imo

Here's some entertaining gameplay of Zangyura, a Platine Dispositif game. The guy playing hates the game and gets a bit frustrated.

Being a Castlevania clone, it's pretty fun.

There's really only been one doujin platformer that I enjoyed, and I cant recall the title at the moment. Something about a nun with uzis. It wasn't very deep, but compared to other platformers it was pretty good.

That looked fun enough that I tracked down a physical copy of the game, which was an adventure in itself. After some Googling and machine translating I discovered that while Touhou Koukayaku is a music CD release, the game was released in Touhou Shinmayaku which is a hybrid audio/data CD (thanks to nZero's japanese skills for helping me confirm that). Turns out Paletweb still had a copy but I guess I got the last one as they're now out of stock.

Really a shame that the game's hidden in such a way, it's pretty fun and has some cool stage design. It's a bit on the easy side as only two of the bosses, including the final boss, gave me anything resembling trouble, but I was playing it on Normal difficulty. There's Lunatic there as well, gotta try that.

Also got Mega Mari and something else very cool coming my way.

This game really is a cut above. I especially like how you don't gain weapons but the bosses themselves join you and can be swapped on the fly, each with their own physics and shot type.

From the guys who brought you MariAri, it's Nitroid! like any other good puzzle-platformer, it'll leave your brain fried long before any enemies show up to kill you.

Author's home page is here. It has links to two places where you can buy the game, but I'm not sure if they accept international customers. You can also download Hydra Castle Labyrinth (already recommended) here, as well as other platformers made by the author.

Yeah I really like the fact I can change characters on the fly, its much better than having to go into a menu.
Ghegs wrote:That looked fun enough that I tracked down a physical copy of the game, which was an adventure in itself.
Gah I should have given some info about it would have saved you some time. Its a bit of a odd one with how the game is an extra to a doujin music album. The devs Peposoft usually make freeware games and from what I can tell that was their first non free game.

Ive only played it in easy & normal (which was easy) but it does have a good flow to it and is fun to speed run. Megaman with a bit of SMB. I need to check out peposoft's other platformers to see if they are as good as TK.

While not doujin one of my fave indie devs is Konjak http://www.konjak.org/
He has a problem with finishing games but Noitu Love 1 & 2 and the short Legend of Princess is worth a look, so is chalk, he is just about the only dev I know that can make playing action games with a M&K fun. He's games are more doujin than western imo.

You guys have any luck getting a controller to work with TK? My 360 controller doesn't even register, and my logitech pad slows the game down to a crawl.

ISTR running into a similar problem with a gamemaker game. Damned if I can remember the fix, though.

Why do people even buy Logitech gamepads? The company is well-known for their steering wheels and keyboards, NOT their joypads.
