Is it really possible to 1CC Radiant SilverGun?

Post by TWITCHDOCTOR »

Its well known that I kinda dispise this game, but I was playing it last night anyway. (all my games get a fair chance during rotation)

I hate having to chain...in fact I hate "chain shmups"... ok, I said it.
Is it at all possible to 1CC this game simply by attempting to kill everything on site(old school style). Or do you have to be anal and shoot only certain colors all the time?

Also, is it that much more helpfull to "disect" the bosses. I usually try to kill em quick. (shoot the core/ to hell with the wings)

I get the feeling I'm playing this WRONG, and the "right" way is simply not my style.

So, I guess I'll keep on shaking my head,(in disgust) and only playing RS once a year for 1 hour(actually I played longer). Then its back on the shelf to collect dust...you dirty bitch!!!

I guess its a "Love/Hate" relationship I have with Radiant SilverGun...I would LOVE to 1CC it, but I HATE the anal "chaining" style.
It would be cool if they added a "shoot the fuck outa everything as fast as you can" mode, but oh well. :?

BTW: The guy who wrote up a "guide" at Gamefaqs is totally annoying in my opinion.
He says something to the effect of, "I'm no shooter God, but I can beat SilverGun with 1 life".
FAG!!!

I guess that theoretically it'd be possible to beat it without playing for score, but it'd be very difficult, since your weapons would be pretty weak...

As for dissecting the bosses, I couldn't say by what percentage your score increases if you do so rather than just blasting it quickly, but seeing as the "boss destruct bonus" is (IIRC) up to 100,000 per boss if you take out all the pieces of them, it could probably add at least a million or two total to your score by the end, if I had to guess...

But yeah, RSG definitely doesn't present itself as a "blast em up" in pretty much any sense (though it offers more non-chaining scoring opportunities than Ikaruga does), but even a novice like myself can have some fun with it...if I just feel like blowing through stuff I can shamelessly lower the difficulty and the extend limit and raise the extra lives, heh heh. Still can't finish it on one credit, but I can get closer.

I suppose you could just play Saturn mode and gradually build up your weapons to the max and play through the game that way.

I haven't played a ton of Radiant Silvergun, but it sounds like you're trying to ignore the entire point of the game, which is to devise a strategy for chaining some of the enemies in such a way as to yield the most points, giving you the best weapons. If your intent is to blast through it like other games, I'm not surprised that you're disappointed in it. For better or for worse, Treasure made the game with a very specific agenda, so to speak. There are definitely ways to play it, and a myriad of ways not to. It just may not be your style.

It's not like you're in a horrible position though. I'm sure somebody would buy it from you at a reasonable price if you get absolutely sick of it. :D

That's probably a good assessment, Twitch. The game really requires you to chain properly - otherwise your weapons don't get powered up properly to beat the game. You could, theoretically, beat the game but many of the more difficult bosses would simply time-out on you since you wouldn't have enough firepower to defeat them in the time alloted.

Anyway, no sense on trying to make yourself enjoy Silvergun. If it's not for you, there is no harm in moving on to games you enjoy. Play what you like and like what you play. I've had the same problem with well-regarded games like Mars Matrix, Battle Garegga and Layer Section. There are days when they start to click a little and I know they are highly respected games and I can understand why others enjoy them... but they are not really for me and at the end of the day I'd rather be playing stuff I enjoy more. I don't sell them in the hopes that they will click oneday, but in the meantime, I'm enjoying tons of Strikers and Radiant Silvergun to fill in the time ;)

A 1CC clear of Silvergun has been done by several folks - all of whom worked to chain and get their weapons powered up. It's a beautiful thing to watch a 1CC clear of Silvergun. Beautiful indeed.

I remember seeing a video of Silvergun being completed with only one life, using only the sword weapon :?

So how does chaining work exactly? Is it easy enough to explain briefly?

I've always enjoyed this game for how it looks and for all the different weapon systems, and have never really sat down and tried to play the game properly, i.e. for a high score or a 1cc. That may seem lame, but RSG has never struck me as an arcade game proper-- it's just too long and epic, maybe too deep. I have a similar reaction to Gradius V.

That's what Saturn mode is there for. Because it saves the level of your weapons, all you have to do is blast the fuck out of everything and after a decent amount of play time, your weapons will be decently powered when you start the next time and you won't have to worry about chaining.

It's pretty simple, really: to earn extra points for chaining enemies, basically all you have to do is kill ONLY enemies of one color (either red, blue, or yellow) in the section of the stage you're in; like Ikaruga (if you're familiar with that), for every set of 3 like-colored enemies you shoot, you get some extra points, and the amount increases with each successive set of 3. It's basically a stingier version of Ikaruga's chaining, since unlike in Iky you can't switch off colors (3 black, 3 white, 3 black...) and keep the chain going: you can ONLY kill enemies of the one color, you have to let everything else live (except the boss, anyways). Though the chain resets once a stage finishes, so you can do red for one stage and blue for another, etc.

There is a secret chain too...red, blue, yellow (keep going on yellow)

There is only one level I think where you want to go for blue instead of red.

That's there so you can practice a particular level (i.e. play the level at the proper firepower as if you fought your way there and upgraded along the way). It's not so great for playing from the start - your ship will be far too powerful for the early levels and it becomes a cake-walk until you finally get to the levels where the power is appopriate.

The secret chain is any number of reds, one (and only one) blue and then yellows to get 10k chains...

There is also lock-on bonus and a few other scoring tricks (secret dogs, etc).

OK, I understand perfectly. Thanks again, BulletMagnet.

BTW, this is the first case where your avatar is unrecognizable to me. I'll probably figure it out someday. I like how the eye on the right blinks (or maybe I'm hallucinating).

Considering how difficult the thing is to begin with, I for one can't say I mind having at least a little bit of opportunity to get some revenge on the game, but that's just me.

Is that the same as the "weapon bonus," or is it something else?

I'm not a big fan of chaining either.

I'm fucking aweful at it in DDP and DDPDOJ. And I sucked at it in Ikaruga too (fuck that dirty bastard of a dreamcast controller, I hate that thing).

Never played RSG though. But chaining and me don't get along unless it's a fighting game.

Sure it is, especially if you don't care about chaining or scoring, which is what Twitch was getting at. He wants to play it as a straight shooter and the only way he's goin to be able to make any progress in the game doing so is by playing in saturn mode and leveling up his weapons so he doesn't have to worry about chaining.

If you're weapons are powerful enough to not care about chaining, then you also don't have to worry about dying since you'll easily tear through first few levels with that kind of firepower. No challenge there. Played as a straight shooter, Silvergun becomes unbalanced.

Eh, it's debateable. Even with the overpowered weapons, the game is still balls hard for the average player.

I've tried to 1CC Radiant Silvergun, but it's not really possible (for me, at least) since my weapons are so damn weak due to my shitty chaining skills. Most bosses would self-destruct after my feeble attempts at blowing off every parts of them to get 100% destruction rate.

How high can the level of one's weapons go if one is chaining properly? When I played (credit-fed that is) I think they got to lv 13 maybe...

Up to Level 33 for A, B and C. However, it's impossible to get all your weapons to level 33 in Arcade Mode, since chaining requires precision, and you get better precision with Vulcan, Wide, Plasma and Sword. The most B can manage is around lvl27-30, while A and C are maxed long before Xiga.

It's a different story in Saturn Mode, since you have all the stages plus extras to work through.

Thats pretty much what I thought all along...that is, you need to chain to build up your weapons power level. But the way that I play the game, sadly that will never happen. Maybe thats why I only play Ikaruga and SiverGun every once in a blue moon...because maybe I need something different.

I can blast the crap outa everything with the likes of Strikers 1945 and DoDonPachi, ThunderForce, etc. I guess I need to try and learn how to play "differently".
I also dislike "Saturn Mode", because it allows you to slowly build up weapon power and save it. See, this goes against my "arcade rules".
Its like using "Save States" or something else real cheap. (Konami code, etc)

I would never sell SilverGun, as the collector in me will not allow that!
I bought the game upon its initial release(brand new) for $65.00 shipped COD (from NCS)
In fact, I remember even throwing away the spine card!!! Because I figured its just a worthless piece of paper packaging.
Oh well, maybe I should have slipped it into the instruction manual? (like I do now) Don't ask.

Not really, considering Treasure developed it and put it there for a reason... it's not a hidden cheat, it's a developer created game mode...

Ah you gotta do is sit back and watch some of ben shinobis vids he takes it to the max.

What I love about radiant is the sheer number of things you can do the weapon usage the absorbing and chaining it has soo much to offer. Soon I'll have my ship speed option!

I've been playing it for about 17 hours now still can't get passed the 3rd level in saturn mode with 10 lives on 1 credit, on default firepower.

I never play with level 33 weps just lv 1s games supposed to be hard! Although stage 6 is near impossible with lv 1 weps starting off.

I agree though if you want to blast through it you're going to have to either start the game at say level 18-20 and ignore chaining or else chain the life out of the stages, I still haven't seen my achieved levels after a complete saturn or arcade run. (I'm really drunk right now just did an exam, ignore my rambling)

I'm developing some pretty good chains...and I'm doing MUCH better now.
I actually got a high score. 1st place with default scores. (17......something)
I never did that well before. I'm even earning my first 1up before I get to that crazy "lazer spinning around goofball". (usually around the boss fight with that thing that throws out all that fire?
(I don't memorize their names, so bere with me)

I also do better when I take route "4", if I'm not mistaken, I reached stage 5?
Not quite shure how the stages run yet.

With 1 continue, I reached that "catapillar" type thing...
Hell, I also found about 4 dogs.

BTW: I'm learning the game on my own, like I always do. I still refuse to watch replay's or read a faq.

I agree, there really is a lot that you can do, and when I "kick ass" at the game, it'l be all me!!!
:D

I'm off now to give it a few more plays!

I'll post some more of my progress...weapon power, etc.

I just now had my best run to date...

Full default "Arcade" mode.

Score........01864750

Weapon Power:
A=7
B=5
C=13

I think I'm doing fairly well considering I've only been playing seriously for 2 days...ugh, nights rather.

I died fighting 4 bosses that trap me inside a box(limiting movement), and they let me "have it" with all sorts of lazers. Kinda overkill, I think.

More progress updates as they come...

Heh heh, they're part of a mini-boss rush, right? If they're the ones I'm thinking of, yeah, they're a real pain, you've just got to twitch like heck through the small stuff they throw at you and then get the heck outta the way when they fire their big guns, hoping that one of 'em dies to clear out some space, it's definitely not easy (for me, anyways). Still, your hitbox is small enough to make it possible if you know what you're doing, so keep at it!

I assume you're talking about the mini-boss-rush on stage 4B right? The one that ends with a massive laser turret?

You can't actually be killed by the box itself, just by bullets and the enemies that surround the box. Knowing that, you can force yourself into a lower corner of the box for some of the patterns, and use Plasma to attack, sending your scratching and weapon bonuses skyrocketing. There are a few little safespots as well, where you can sit and use Plasma or Homing to attack.

Swordplayers purposely die so they can respawn outside of the box.

Hey Twitch, I'm glad to see you're starting to dig Silvergun a tiny bit. I know it's not the kind of shooter you normally enjoy but it's cool that you're getting some milage out of it. As you know, I happen to love Silvergun and am always happy to see someone get a bit of enjoyment from the game. Chaining is necessary but you don't have to go bonkers with it - chain the first two stages (3A and 3B) gets you quite a bit of weapon improvement that will carry you for quite a number of stages (at least through all of Stage 3 (the stages in Silvergun are a bit twisted chronologically... especially in Saturn mode which forces you to play Stage 2 and Stage 4... it starts in Stage 3, then flashback to 2, then snapback to reality of stage 4, 5, 6 and then time-warp to link stage 1).

Enjoy and let us know how you're getting on with the game!

I'm going to take a break from playing now.
My last play was at 19 something score-wise.

My weapon power was slightly higher as well. (see above post)

I kinda feel like I know "how to play" the game now, and I'm understanding the chaining aspects, but there are some parts that literally freak me out...as in "Ohh SHIT! What the fuck am I supposed to do know!!??"

I guess I can always use some credits to get more familair with the later levels. (like stage 5 and so forth)
Since I haven't been credit feeding, I now have the early levels down.

PS: I still wouldn't refer to it as "The Best Shooting Game Ever", but I'am having a lot more fun with it. You simply can't play it like a typical "blaster"...if you do, you will think that game basically sucks cause its so unfair. (Just as I did)
Well, its only unfair with low powered weapons. "Chains" build up the power; then you can start kicking ass and taking names.

Heck, I'm actually glad that I held on to it all these years!
