STGT '11 Week 5 (Final) - Blade Buster discussion!

Post by tinotormed »

HELL YEAH!

From timed Delilah bonuses to Lazarus bonuses and insane shooting, etc. here goes Blade Buster! Notably, this recent doujin shmup keeps the tradition of the Star Soldier series, but with the addition of bullet canceling in some boss battles!

Wanna talk the talk about the fun stuff, the cool features, and other things you knew about the game? Well, this thread is for YOU! :D

It's a pretty good game for a few credits, but I'm not sure it's ideal for a tournament setting given how easy it is to clear (I did it on my first credit at 1.1m) and the very narrow score variation, compared to something like Dangun Feveron from a past STGT. Still it's a fun game and it's probably a relief to avoid a last week scoring marathon ;)

(Semi-related but if you have a Cave craving, I'll be running a competition over on Cave-STG starting after STGT, with a vote between Ketsui, Akai Katana Zetsu and Futari God... linky)

I'm not in this competition but I love Blade Buster and in the above statement you're entirely missing the point of Caravan games. It's not about clearing the game (which anyone should reasonably be able to do) but about exploiting all the bonuses and score items along the way for higher and higher scores that come with more and more practice and familiarity with the short stage. As you play over that stage again and again you will discover new exploits and the score variation, although narrow, will display your skill and experience with the game.

My point being that even for a Caravan game, there isn't that much scoring variation due to few special bonuses going by the Youtube 1.577m video. I'm sitting on 1.4m now with no effort and little skill, and unless there are significant secrets not in the video, I expect a lot of people to top out somewhere above 1.5m and hit a ceiling there. We'll see how it actually turns out, though, after the usual grinding suspects have poured a few dozen hours into the game :)

I dunno, isn't that mostly just a visual thing? small variation/large variation doesn't really matter in a competition like this, players scores are listed in order and points given by the order. and the scoring isn't exponential which makes the differences easier to discern. but if the maximum won't take a lot of effort to reach that's a problem I guess.

Erh, the games have been decided before STGT even started? I don't see any room for conspiracy theories here... And all the unfocused practice Touhou gives you may be a boon here ;)

Well, a TCACTRM member did help pick the games, so there might be something in that theory!1

Until you get to know that Blade Buster was an unanimous decision. Yes, completely unanimous.

short guide to this game please?
we have 1 button right?

Idk I must have turned color blind when I launched this game cause I can barely see what's going on.
One of the most hideous game on the NES.
Gameplay is smooth tho,all that matter.

A and B are both fire buttons. Select controls your ships speed. (you can see the speed value at the bottom right of the screen)

Thanks so much for making this the final game, it's one of my favorite caravans ever and so impressive for a doujin title! Now to hook my Wii up at the new place and work on some scores...

Not my type of game as too fast and a bit too random because of its speed. Some of the sound effects really grate after time which never helps.

It plays on nesDS. The DS is far and away my favorite controller. I'm in love.

Gotta watch those heart palpitations, though. Recca and now this are probably the games most deserving of the title "manic."

This game is good. I can't have enough of it.

Although one gripe is neither FCUEX or Nestopia can't twitch move. Sometimes when I pressed a key my avatar didn't move.

The game is excellent. A fitting end for the best STGT ever.
