What is your single shmup boss that blew your entire game?

Post by Adigun A. Polack »

A splendid, SPLENDID hello again to all of you ( :D !! ), and I am back to this most awesome Shmups forumboard after at least a couple of forced absences from the internet due to an internet disconnection as a result of an unpaid cable bill that I had to help my uncle pay for two straight recent months in a row! I mean, very tough times that I had to go through this summer, you know? Anyway, I have returned finally indeed... and thank rather God for that!!! ;) !

Speaking of very tough times, have you ever had one of those times where while you are going for a full no-miss clear of an entire shmup that you are playing, a certain stage/area boss comes in and just WIPES AWAY all of your lives completely in a single pass-through, suddenly from right out of nowhere... that can quite easily result in one of the worst Game Overs you have ever experienced, most shockingly!! Boy, doesn’t that make you so pissed that you feel like throwing expletives out of your mouth from the top of your lungs as well as chucking your controller utterly hard at the TV/arcade screen, hmmm?

I mean, as plain as day, I can clearly remember as a kid while I was playing the Game Boy 1989 shmup entitled SolarStriker where I was doing quite outstanding in getting a full no-miss clear of the entire game so far... right up to the end of Stage 4 where there was a huge base with its many stationary pods that shot bullets in all directions, just blowing away my current ship as well as ALL of my remaining lives in one single pass... made me quite mad and frustrated that I did not care to play it anymore at that time for a long while.

So with that said, what is indeed your single shmup boss that wiped out your entire game like that (ESPECIALLY if you are going for your full no-miss run in the game’s entirety as well)? It would be truly damn interesting for all of us to hear your thoughts on that ( ! ), as that kind of situation right there is quite one of those disastrous nightmares that even we as an amazing shmup community has probably gone though in some point or another.

See you in a bit as we discuss this right now and let’s help each other overcome those horrible, horrible nightmares together!!! ;)

UPDATE (on August 21, 2011 at 3:40pm EST): In my first typing of my initial post, I have typed it in in a very angry manner that made some viewers really uncomfortable ( :( ), as I found out from the first two replies that I saw where I realized my error (I did not know better at the time). And so, I have just adjusted the post to make it sound a little nicer for the benefit of this very community, especially for me to correct myself. My deepest apologies for that mistake. :) !

From within the first two replies that I just seen, I was rather too carried away at the typing and expressed my thoughts in a very angry manner during the first writing of my opening post of this topic... and with that, I am so *terribly* sorry for that. I did not know better at the time on that. :(

Thus, I am changing the tone of my opening post right now, just to make it sound a little nicer so that we can get into the topic much easier and more comfortably. Besides, I just want to make this place better for everyone, and I will do my best the right way to make it happen. That is all. :) !

Viewpoint level 2 crab boss - beating him felt like scoring a world cup goal, had a few people in the room when I did also. What an arse.

Ketsui - Boss #5. As I think training modes and savestates are for sissies, I just have to rely on awesome dodging and bombs. I've only beaten it the one time so far.

The final "Bozon" mecha worm boss on the USA region Sidearms PCB conversion kits that were a dime a dozen in the arcades and burger/pizza joints in California during the late 1980s (distributed by Romstar). I could get to the final boss on my first life but it would wipe out all my remaining five lives and thus require a second quarter to finish it for good and get a final score in the neighborhood of 1.4 to 1.5 million+ for the top 5 ranked slots.

Of course, at the end of the night, the SA high scores would disappear due to no high score saving on those early Jamma based PCBs back in those days. So a Polaroid snapshot would be needed as proof or access to an full-sized VHS camcorder with a blank VHS tape to record it for posterity.

Saw a local ad once in the newspaper for a Sidearms cab for sale with a mere $100.00 USD price tag. Had to pass it up due to it being a full-sized Dynamo woodie upright based cab back in the early 1990s. Those generic Dynamo cabs came with a 19" yoko based RGB monitor so it displayed SA quite razor sharp. Even the stellar PC Engine/TG-16 ports of SA couldn't match the original arcade PCB version but it was pretty close as far as console ports were considered.

I call these kinds of bosses "gatekeepers" in that they are essentially a wall that you have to beat in order to see the rest of the game. Lots of times all the previous bosses are relatively easy, too, and then you hit the gatekeeper and are stopped cold.

For me, the gatekeepers I've encountered are:

The giant green robot from Stage 4 of Super Star Soldier. I can't figure out how to dodge the damn homing missiles reliably. It always takes away all/most of my lives.

Stage 4 Boss from DonPachi. Didn't have a clue about how to fight this thing the first time I encountered it. It has much nastier attack patterns than the previous bosses. Even a few "gotcha!" attacks to cheese you out. Finally getting the hang of this boss, though.

Three by my count. Of course, this isn't including the mini-bombs I pull off in-between charges.

You know, that is quite a damn interesting way of putting it, Blackbird, especially pertaining to the topic right here we are talking about... really good point right there in the meaning of “gatekeepers” as the dead-end kinds of bosses that you are talking about indeed. Never knew that one before; thank you so much for that fascinating new definition there that should go right along into my shmups vocabulary at once!! :D

Ahhhhh yes, you are most definitely on to something there, PC Engine Fan X... I can simply remember the sheer excitement in the arcades of blowing away the final boss that first ruined your entire game (especially after a good number of tries of clearing it all on just *one* credit alone). And after finally beating such a dead-end bastard of a final boss to a pulp indeed and seeing the clear light at the end of the tunnel, so to speak, justice sure is sweet!!! ;)

Furthermore, in those ‘80s days (long before the common days of EEPROMS and built-in bookkeeping systems even took shape and form in the arcades), about the only way your all-time biggest high scores were TRULY glorified for all to see were indeed through Polaroid cameras and VHS tapes recording how you got there while playing a certain arcade shmup from start to finish... those were spectacularly amazing stuff back then, especially with the proper equipment and know-how to help you get the entire job done successfully — all the way down to the perfect timing and overall execution about how it all works in the first place. Very challenging to pull off indeed from back in those days for quite at least some people there, but the rewards were so handsomely great upon playing your cards right at setting it all up at the right moment at the right precise time.

Yep, those were the days, I undoubtedly gotta say for sure, my man!!!

Just so you know, the term "gatekeeper" has been used in boxing for ages to describe fighters who are are talented but fall short when it comes to capturing championship titles. They serve as a gateway of sorts for up-and-coming boxers who have beaten a number of "cans" and "journeyman" and need a step-up in challenge on their way to getting a belt.

btw, is anyone else interested in seeing a one-on-one dialogue between Adigun A. Polack and PC Engine Fan X? I hope he's for real and not just someone on here having fun.

Now you got me encouraged, NTSC-J!! :D

Anyway, you are quite right about the term of “gatekeeper” indeed, as it is so especially true even now... come to think of it, it became rather an interesting boxing term even from the old days as well as far as I can now honestly remember about it myself. Very good there! ;)

Crusty Hammer screws up more one-ship runs for me in Darius Gaiden than it really should at this point.

But Dimahoo's stage 5 boss, Infernon, really takes the cake for game-ruining bosses that aren't the final boss. When it opens up both sides for that double bullet spread attack I just look at my number of bombs and pray.
Of course, that's just an opinion.

Dimahoo really takes the piss when it comes to impossible patterns.

I crashed like 5 times on Infernon before I was able to finally pass or even no miss him...even managed to 1 bomb him once, but not after using 3 bombs on the stupid blue bomber. That one is almost as bad as the boss.

Mushi Futari 1.5 Maniac Larsa was the bane of my existence for a couple weeks. I must've spent a good 10-15 hours in training mode alone, constantly practicing her patterns before I felt like I had a good chance at beating her with two deaths or less. Why must she be so much harder than everything else in the game?
