No scoring system in sight
Entire first stage (except the boss) is boring since you can click on every bullet and never have any threat of dying
Hard to tell what's going on during the boss fight
Siezure inducing flashing happens every time you use the charge thing, ugh
Art isn't too bad, though

Thanks for the reply Udderdude!

The score is displayed in the bottom left, maybe there was some graphical text error? I have to admit that I built this game around the bosses, the level is really just an afterthought lol. You're not the first to bring up the seizure-inducing flashes, but hey, I like me some seizures every now and then lol.

I'm happy to hear you liked the art, it took a lot of effort to not go over the NES palette restrictions, but it seems to have paid off ;)

Thanks for playing!

If the stages are an afterthought you should make them a LOT shorter, and also give some of the enemies those orange bullets that you can't click away.

What I mean by "scoring system" is some way the player can improve their own score by doing something in the game besides just "Kill everything on the screen". Examples being shooting enemies closer, grabbing items, multipliers, bullet scraping, etc.

Ooooh, I see what you mean about the scoring ;) Well, at the end of the game extra lives are tallied up for extra points, that's all I got though lol.

The level's only real function was to familiarize the player with the basic mechanics of the game. During it's development, I really struggled to make sure that the player remembered to "click on blue things". Often they'd just forget that function even existed, so the level is very blue thing heavy :P

Anyways, thanks for the critique, if you're interested in seeing all the content in the game, you can send an email over to lazybraingames@gmail.com and I'll shoot you over a secret code for 30 lives, if that's of any interest to ya ;)

I do have a few other SHMUPs as well that might connect a bit better, here's a link to a couple of them...

DLing right now. Will get back to you with a possible post edit or a follow up post.

Edit:

Wow I am pretty impressed with this. Very unique and quite unexpected, especially for an 8bit. Gives me a very retro feel as if I was playing a classic. Job well done sir. On the downside, the music is a bit bland and doesn't stand out with the gameplay. However as Udder said, the bosses are pretty much the worthwhile efforts of the game. 3/5
