Dux 1.5 by HuCast for Dreamcast
UPDATE 8/19/11: it looks like this will be a free (after shipping) update disc for owners of the original Dux. Check out the HuCast blog here: http://www.blog.hucast.net/
I haven't seen this posted anywhere (please correct me if I missed it though), and just learned about it so thought I would share it here. Apparently there is a version 1.5 of Dux in the works for Dreamcast:

I enjoyed the original game, but it would be nice to see some updates to it.

Re: Dux 1.5 by HuCast for Dreamcast
I own the original and if I was gonna buy an update it would have to be quite radical cos although the original was very pretty it was also both dull and irritating from the point of view of gameplay.
Obviously the forced continues were ridiculous, but it needs something to make it a bit snappier (like LH Pink Bullets) and also more finished (same goes for Fast Striker, which has an unused power bar on the screen and accidentally shows programming calls).
Or if it was 50p, cos I paid £20 on Dux which would've been better spent on lunch at a Thai restaurant or a nice trip to the cinema

Not to be an asshole but, How many of you are actually gonna be playing DUX seriously?, i mean yeah, The continues thingy was really annoying, But you could just wait... Yeah, The score exploit is gay, But you could just not do it...
Anyways, It's really worth the effort to make an update to a game nobody will play? Just look at how many people takes Fast Striker seriously.
PS: I consider it an awesome game, No offence to the devs nor anybody.

Re: Dux 1.5 by HuCast for Dreamcast
What they could've done was releasing this thing on the PC or XBLA (or maybe even try to license on the 360 retail, I still wonder who the guys that made Eschatos got away with it). All those bugs could've been fixed in a matter of days with a simple patch and for free. No need of update disk or anything or all the stuff that happened. But I guess the selling point was the fact that it was a DC game, right?
Same as Uzumakijl, the game looked pretty nice.

NOW REACHES THE FATAL ATTRACTION BE DESCRIBED AS "HELLSINKER". DECIDE DESTINATION.
Re: Dux 1.5 by HuCast for Dreamcast
I won't. Please make your material for a platform which isn't an 11 year old discontinued unsupported console.
The thought of releasing Dreamcast games in 2011 is "nice", but a financially terrible decision choice, as it isolates your exposure to an already niche genre's audience.

Wasn't there supposed to be a free update?

It's taken a couple of years but fair play to them

There's a suggestion on the page that there'll only be a limited edition of updates.
If so I trust prioroty will go to people who already bought the original from them

Also does this mean that the print run of the original is ended then?

Re: Dux 1.5 by HuCast for Dreamcast
Reading the blog I find nothing said about new levels - the only purpose for
DUX 1.5 seems to fix the "bugs". Please correct me if I´m wrong.
Maybe some changed colours or music and then I hope for Dux 2.0 / Redux
or whatever may come after the release of Gunlord.
As a owner of the original DUX I will try to get 1.5 - had fun with Dux
( and got sometimes some hate for that - don ´t care about scoring in a
shooter - I mostly play for survival ) - if you only pay for the shipping
I consider it a fair deal ( if the print of 1.5 is not too small ).

Re: Dux 1.5 by HuCast for Dreamcast
Since I already have the original I suppose I'll update my disc.
Any chance this will include some color adjustments, to make the foreground stand out more from the background? Or perhaps some nice thick black lines around important stuff that can actually hurt you. Right off the bat, the first level is super annoying with all the boxes floating around in the background that look like something to avoid.

Re: Dux 1.5 by HuCast for Dreamcast
DUX was an excellent game designwise. I can't get enough of the cute plastic style.
Nevertheless it's gameplay was infinitely flawed for a gamer who focuses on scoring and thus I will probably never play it again.

Re: Dux 1.5 by HuCast for Dreamcast
It's quite strange to see people getting so upset over a bug... modern retail games, with massive studios behind them and armies of testers, are released with bugs. Bugs which frequently go unpatched. F1 2011 was probably the funniest, while Mass Effect 2 had you randomly floating into the air, forcing reloading a previous save point. People kicked up a stink about Metroid: Other M's bug and frankly, after the reveal, it amazed me that anyone would ever do what caused it - and that's coming from a Nintendo studio, so can you have a bit of understanding for a game produced by a couple of guys? This bug is only "game breaking" when playing for score if you choose to exploit it... once you know about it, it's pretty easy to avoid.
I enjoyed DUX to an extent, once I got over the main mechanic being hyper-soaking rather than shooting shit up. The only thing I'd like from it is a timer or a yes/no option on the continue screen.

Metroid: The Other M wasn't exactly made by a Nintendo studio. Metroid Prime was and its bugs got fixed in the reissue.TransatlanticFoe wrote:People kicked up a stink about Metroid: Other M's bug and frankly, after the reveal, it amazed me that anyone would ever do what caused it - and that's coming from a Nintendo studio, so can you have a bit of understanding for a game produced by a couple of guys?

Re: Dux 1.5 by HuCast for Dreamcast
It's been nearly two years !
Well, game was great (kind of a R-Type soaked in sugar !), but with too many flaws : 1 year late, no config menu, no loops (as it was said there should have been), problem to see what's happening on screen (so that there was an option to remove backgrounds !) and above all that scoring bug in the ery first seconds...
But still, game was great ! (which sounds incredible after all of that !)
But I wish you well and will pay for he shipment of mine ! (any surprise on it ? new game mode ? new music ? etc...)
And by the way, how will this be organised ? We pay you by paypal for shipment, and according our name is on your list of buyers of the first version, you'll send it to us ?

I'm very much up for getting a fixed version of this. Hopefully my copy being second hand won't be a huge pain
And now I'm going to go for disagreeing with Elixir...
Maybe, though, I've just misinterpreted your use of 'exposure' Elixir?
And now I'm going to go for disagreeing with Elixir...
I certainly agree that financially it's a risky approach, but I don't know about lack of exposure. Dux and Dux 1.5 might be targeting a damn small install base, but in terms of exposure and generation of awareness, I dare say the novel hook of being a DC game in 2011 will guarantee them lots of news stories and similar attention online and even in that old dinosaur that is print media. I'd bet a huge chunk of their target market will know this exists; and that's a big part of selling enough copies and thus helping continue to pro up the genre.Elixir wrote:It isolates your exposure to an already niche genre's audience.

Effort. Many people look, few comment. There are more than enough shmup fans out there that would buy this if it were made available for consoles that they actually, you know.. still have or own. I don't even own a Dreamcast and I'm sure as hell not tracking one down just to play this, on top of the fact that I have nowhere to hook it up to.spadgy wrote:I certainly agree that financially it's a risky approach, but I don't know about lack of exposure. Current gen shmup exposure is also piss poor but at least it's accessible.
Re: Dux 1.5 by HuCast for Dreamcast
Then you may not play, just as I may not play Eschatos. In UK Dreamcasts are plentiful and <£20 so if you're genuinely interested in the game it's no big obstacle, unlike the cost of a J-360.Elixir wrote: I don't even own a Dreamcast and I'm sure as hell not tracking one down just to play this, on top of the fact that I have nowhere to hook it up to.
Personally I think it's really a nice touch to see modern DC games and it also, cynically, might actually be shrewd economically.
Look at the price of Sturmwind or Fast Striker (which I'm really starting to see the excellence of). On XBLA they wouldn't be more than a tenner...

Eschatos is a poor example because it's region-free and doesn't require Japanese 360.mjclark wrote:Then you may not play, just as I may not play Eschatos. They might have been cheaper on XBLA but they would have turned a higher profit catering to a large audience.

Ooops you're rightElixir wrote: Eschatos is a poor example because it's region-free and doesn't require Japanese 360.

And you're also right about bigger turnover on XBLA but I get the impression that NG:Dev do this stuff more for love than money.
The downside to that is sometimes shoddy production values, empty promises and indefinite delays viz this thread but the upside is new gamez for Dreamcast and NeoGeo.
Like Blade Buster for NES there's something almost steampunkish about new games for dead systems that really grabs me
