Xbox emulation vs real Arcade

Post by Dark Helmet »

Hi, first post here.
I've really gotten into shmuping lately, and have enjoyed going throught the xenocide files. I've even aquired some saturn shmups and a Twin astro city stick for my shmuping :D

Anyway, there's a couple of somewhat tecnical issues I've been pondering lately, and as I know nothing about technical matters I better consult "the knowing"...

Here goes. Lately I had a chance to tjeck out a few shmups played throught a chipped xbox and running on the emulator fbaXXX. The games were DoDonpachi, Guwange and battle Garegga.
When playing DoDonpachi on xbox, it seemed to run very much like the Saturn version. Except it had a lot more slowdowns. (and the explosions were much nicer) My questions are:

1. Does the Xbox play these games (Donpaachi, Dodonpachi, Guwange, Batsugun etc.) exactly like they would play on real arcade hardware?

2.Do the arcade versions have these slowdowns, but the saturn versions do not? I've gathered that this can be the case for some ports..

3. Also tecnically if an original arcade game infact does have some slowdowns, would an emulator not emulate these slowdowns?

4. Couldn't it also not be the case that there could be some slowdown when the xbox emulates these games, which do not acure on arcade hardware, but which are do to the xbox strugling with the task of emulating? which I understand is pretty draining of processing power.

5. I've newer seen Guwange played on arcade hardware, so I dont know what that looks like. But seing it being played on the xbox was very awesome looking to me. I wonder if this is Arcade perfect?

Well, I'm really not tech savy and have been thinking about these things lately, so I hope some of you knowlegeable people will explain to me..

Thanks

The PCB of DDP has slowdown which the Saturn does not.

The Saturn version has inferior explosions to the PCB.

Mame or your Xbox is providing you with a very close to arcade experience.

Don't know about Guwange because i've never played it any form.
This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

They are as close as any sane person could want (aside from batsugun, which I don't think has been emulated properly yet), but there will probably be many posts claiming the deficiencies of mame emulation.

I don't own an XBOX myself; but many people claim that FBAxxx has a lot of joystick lag. Did you ever noticed that ?

There's also the issue of resolution. Xbox emulators run these games scaled to high resolutions, not at the native resolution of these games, adding blurriness and interlacing that keeps them from looking quite as nice as the originals. However, the way they end up looking is pretty much comparable to how most modern shooter ports look, so...

I'm in the same situation, although my emulator is MAMEoX. Basically, dodonpachi emulates on the xbox with 1) better visuals/graphics and 2) no slowdown for large amounts of bullets.

Basically this means it makes the game harder, thus, you die more.

Thanks people.
These are some questions I've been running around with lately, with nowhere to turn them.

I haven't noticed this.. In fact I'd say that I don't think there can be much joystick lag, as I'm sure this would have irritated me..

I have certainly noticed the blurriness..

But all in all I'm very impressed with what a chipped xbox can offer a shmup'er..

Has anyone actually played both the pcb of Guwange and Guwange on xbox, and could tell us about it?

Not sure if this is possible with Mame on the Xbox, but with regular PC Mame you can overclock the virtual cpu, eliminating all slowdown, and sync the refresh rate to 60fps. It might not be 'authentic', but it's very impressive to watch, and even more of a challenge. But alas, most people here consider it blasphemy and accuse great gaming experiences like these of having 'no soul.'

Their loss :D

Hey and dont forget to activate some cool antiblur filters.

you have to activate the mame console:

/antiblur /spec 255.08.13 you can also use
/antiblur /spec 255.09.17 but i think its too smooth
