Anyone else feeling the Strania meh?

Post by Casper<3 »

I really wanted to like this game. I'm a huge fan of mechs and a huge fan of G.Rev. Under Defeat and Senko DUO are just awesome. I was looking forward to this, didn't bother to DL the demo first, just jumped right in. ....Then I played it. Then I tried it again, and later again. For some reason I'm a bit let down and just can't connect with the game. Any one else in the same boat?

Yep. Don't like it much. I don't really like any of G.Rev's games, though.

I tried it twice, didn't really click with the scoring mechanic or the artstyle, moved on, didn't look back

As far as 360 shooters go I think Strania is tops actually- there's nothing very innovative about it but the mechanics are decent, the graphics are pretty and it's solid all round.
My only critiscism is that the online co-op is so basic...

I played a guy in Japan and it was lag-free. They nailed it.

I like G.Rev quite a bit, and was really excited about this game. I was away from home when it came out, friend picked it up and I tried it at his place...after playing it my enthusiasm was significantly reduced. I dunno something about it felt weird to me, too slow or claustrophobic or something. I've been thinking I should grab it myself and give it another chance proper, but haven't got around to doing it yet.

What? Please tell me you meant to say XBLA shooters. If not, then thats the craziest shit I've ever heard.

After playing a bunch of Border Down and Radiant Silvergun fir the first time recently, I thought I'd give this a try, hoping for a nice fusion of the two.

I was not very impressed. The weapon system is ok, but I didn't really enjoy any ither aspect of the game. The music, level design, enemy placement, etc just felt... meh. I decided to just go play more Silvergun.

It didn't click right away but I'm glad I stuck with it, it's now one of my favorite games to come out this year. Nobody does atmosphere and presentation like G.Rev.

Play the DLC instead, or watch this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hLUNuf71JXs

"improved sequel" for half the price? Level design seems solid to me on both sides though and it rewards trying out all the weapons which makes the game come together well when you go for clears with high end bonus. No comment about the music :p

Scoring system is ultra anal. Hated it. Doesn't have an effect on survival, but being able to play well required more weapon juggling than I was comfortable with.

Good music though.

Which mechanic? going for 9dan 1cc was the most fun for me, after that it got too finicky for me. You have a lot of room for freedom if you want to get a goodish score with all weapons 1dan and killing bosses with multipliers. MMM is switching weapons whenever possible to get more overdrives, but that really has a small effect on your score compared to the effort.

It's tied with Hard Corps Uprising for me, but yeah it's awesome. My favorite G.rev game too.

Yeah, I deleted it from my hard drive, a while back. Sorry, G. Rev.

I haven't played it, but I've watched the whole Side Vower Mrmonkeyman replay and was underwhelmed by the lack of dodging required and lack of adrenaline. I guess I'm not missing out.

I love G.rev shooters. Strania may not be their best one (it isn't for sure), mostly because the score mechanics are too simple and the first two stages are way too easy, but for 800 MP it's a worth it.

I am a fan of shmups, G.Rev, and 80s-anime-styled mechs. As such, I have decided that the incredible amount of time I had to sink into the game before I fell in love with it defines the universality of that aspect of the game's character. It's a slow-burn, but incredibly rewarding. It's also incredibly novel compared to the most recent offerings of the genre which, despite being amazing games in their own right, have played it relatively safe in order to appeal to a very specific, very niche marketplace.

Strania is very much meh. I haven't spent enough time on Side Vower, so I haven't decided if that side is decent. It's definitely better than the main game though.

But you bought it, right? Yeah, this is why I can't fully adapt to digital distribution.

He's making it look easy. Side Vower is pretty difficult IMHO

Gotta admit, I play this the least out of all the shmups on 360, but that doesn't mean it's bad. Just look at the competition. I just find myself putting time into certain other shmups over this. It's a good solid game with excellent music and graphics, and the gameplay is great with the weapon switching along with cool stage design.

In the end though I think I prefer something a little more straight forward. But that's just me.

Having said that, I will devote the time this deserves eventually but I'm working on a bit of a backlog at the moment as you can imagine

Man, I didn't even play the demo all that long ago and I had completely forgotten what this game is. Had to Google it just to confirm you were talking about the game I was thinking of. Yeah, it is pretty abysmal considering I never usually forget these kind of things.

So, OK. We all know the scoring system is kind of asinine and most consider it unpleasant. If I buy and dump some time into the game is it likely to be enjoyable for survival?

I didn't like the bosses, and TBH dodging scenery was a bit dull. It's more like an old-style hori than a vert bullet-hell, though, so you might like that.

All you need is the end bonus and using overdrives on bosses to get a decent score -_- I'd recommend trying for 1cc, then for all weapons at 1dan and if you really get into the game try all the intricate scoring things like any other shmup.

I wonder what people who like cybattler generally think of this.
