As for your harmonica comment, that just drips with lack of knowledge, or an inability to identify the difference between actual playing and just blowing random notes.
Apparently you are unwilling to acknowledge the simple, self evident fact that some instruments are easier to preform on than others. Therefore, the lower, less complex instruments will always be easier to make pleasant sounds with, even if the musician is not conscious of what the hell he's doing (A.K.A. Joe Shmo off the street.). A cello, on the other hand, requires extraordinary progress and takes months of playing non stop before your material even BEGINS to sound good.
Making any kind of music involves some knowledge

If you're talking about experience with listening to a large variety of music spanning many genres, then yes, granted that person can take what he's heard and use it for inspiration. But if you're talking about knowledge of the instrument/time signatures/ etc, then I totally disagree. There are indeed musicians out there who just pick up an instrument they have no knowledge about and start playing. Sometimes the result is pleasant, other times, not so much. Case and point for the latter: the dubstep links posted in this thread. Even if they are following a structure that embodies the "dubstep sound," their music is god awful.
If that is your true opinion, no offense, but I would lump you in with the people incapable of making music. You sound like my friends who are all hot to trot to make music and think it's soooo easy, and then they can't even tap out a beat and keep time.
No offense taken, because your opinion is misguided. I crapped this out in less than a month. Imagine what I'm capable of if I dedicate myself to writing a song over a long period of time.

I have never taken a music theory class in my life. I play by ear, and I collect the right notes, piece them together in a elegant manner, and there's the song. Of course there is complicated stuff that I couldn't dream of playing with my limited expertise.

And about not keeping a beat...I am a fantastic dancer. I can synchronize my body with the beat pretty damn well, and the ladies love it.
It helps if you are drunk
Why am I not surprised? :? If you need to be intoxicated just to appreciate a genre which you'd otherwise respond with a "meh" to, then that should tell you a lot-- not so much about the person, but about the music itself. Fuck dude, even Rosie O' Donnell would look sexy to you if you're trashed.

My point is if you know nothing about how to actually make those sounds, you can't do it, thus it's not that easy. If you don't know how to make a wobble, you ain't making dubstep. If you don't know how to use a DAW, you ain't making dubstep. Same goes for anything. If you can't use the tools, you can't do it. Grabbing some Massive presets and going wub wub wub is not making dubstep. Sure anybody can pick up a noise maker and make noise, but if you can't tell the difference between a commercial album and a monkey banging on a keyboard, I don't know what to say.

Not sure what you are trying to prove with that piece....but it doesn't really help your argument. You are playing random notes with a reverby preset pad....with no beat...or song structure, and it took you weeks(!). It is a huge leap from what you have there to even a basic dubstep song. Refer to my previous comment.

I didn't say that, but...
You are missing the point completely. This is club music. You drink in clubs; ideally you want music to suit that mood. It's not a matter of 'needing to be drunk' to like it, if you bump it loud in a club, it's easy to feel the groove. Like any other club music, it's loop based repetitive music by definition. People just want to dance, give it a steady rhythm and a lot of bass and everybody is happy. It has it's time and place. If you are bumping it over your laptop speakers off youtube in your parents basement, it's not surprising you might miss that.

...but if you can't tell the difference between a commercial album and a monkey banging on a keyboard, I don't know what to say.
This is so insulting to my intelligence that I originally didn't feel like it deserved a serious response. Man, OF COURSE I can tell the difference. I'm not retarded.
My point is if you know nothing about how to actually make those sounds, you can't do it, thus it's not that easy.
*Shrugs* Fair enough. But I would never bother in the first place because that genre does not appeal to me and my creative juices in the slightest.
You are playing random notes... with no song structure...
There is indeed structure, there. You might have been confused by the lack of repetitive notes (which is sometimes a key component for structure in music), which I have added convincingly in the time between now and when I uploaded this (hence the disclaimer "it is far from finished."). Really, at bottom, the key sign of structure is the way the melody unfolds and brings the listener on a journey. There is no objective "right" structure for music. Not in specific genres (it would all sound the same) and certainly not in a broad sense (then it wouldn't even belong to a genre...see: avant garde artfag music, which would be almost as ridiculous as a videogame with elements from every genre in it.).

Speaking of which, which is really more of a spiritual journey, this passionless crap, ripe for the garbage disposal:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DRdMHbzjrlU

or my song? Given the way this conversation is going, I suspect a hilarious answer.

I wouldn't mind hearing some of your stuff, either. Assuming you play an instrument...
It is a huge leap from what you have there to even a basic dubstep song.
Taking you seriously would be next to impossible at this point.
it's loop based repetitive music by definition.
Yes, but repetition is only pleasant to a certain point. Past that point, the song becomes boring, and the listener might as well grab his keys, leave the club, and buy an album worth listening to instead.

Well, you really do need to learn some musical theory, at the very least.
I promised myself not to get sucked in to a topic where guys rag on the latest dance club music style, fuck.

I totally agree. I can only do so much on my own without proper guidance, or I'll hit a creative brick wall. :| It's happened before, many times.

ive played viola (and can play violin almost as well) for literally over half my life now (apparently this makes me more qualified to comment on music in siren2011's eyes lol!) and can confirm that dubstep is, in fact, music, and that all of siren2011's posts in this thread are pretty much retarded

still though, dubstep is pretty shitty. most of the time.

edit: oh also, one of the best violinists I ever (personally) knew spent quite a bit of time learning to play harmonica well :D

This is coming from the guy who doesn't know how to make proper use of periods, apostrophes, and ignores capitalizing sentences.

Late to the party, so I'm gonna ingore the past three pages and post my own opinions on the genre.

Generally what bothers me with dubstep is that it's everywhere, and people seem to like every dubstep track they hear simply "because it's dubstep". This goes well along with most tracks being based on exactly the same formula.

That said, I SHOULD like dubstep since I'm already a fan of all sorts of genres of instrumental, quirky electronic music ranging from bouncy ebm or rave to drum'n'bass or hardcore noisy power electronics, but most of the dubstep stuff I hear just manages to annoy me. It may be the hip hop and reggae influences (I HATE "dancehall"), or maybe just the formula thing I mentioned before.

Too bad there's no way to embed a YouTube video in this forum, but if you're like me and generally dislike dubstep but would still like to hear some awesome dubstep that will make and exception for you, I recommend checking out these bands, which are technically dubstep or bordering it, but also manage to make some amazing awesome music:

Matta:

Marching Dynamics:

Amen to that. Reggae is awful. Off-key shouting is not singing. Unless you're listening to The Fall, but that's closer to Punk, so it's OK. Dub however is really good.

Dubstep is the first genre of music I've come across that I unconditionally dislike. Every single dubstep song I've been subjected to have been pure shit, and I've listened to a few of the supposedly good ones linked in this very topic.

I just don't get any part of it. Not to mention dustep remixes, which seem to be all about utterly destroying good songs.
