Gahhh Dubstep!! >_<

Post by Skykid »

What the fuck is with Dubstep? It's so shit and it's everywhere :x
We went out looking for some decent dance nights last week and all the venues were doing goddamn dubstep!

Seriously, this fad is total ass, I hate it. You can't dance to Dubstep, you can hardly even walk to it. Everyone stands about like comatose druggie neanderthals rocking to and fro to the most boring, diluted beats ever.

This is probably only relevant to the UK (not sure how widespread it is) but I just wanted to vent some rage.

For an example, here's DJ Fresh's Gold Dust from last year (9 million views)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RNuUgbUzM8U&ob=av3e

And here's the Dubstep remix that everyone is creaming themselves for (10 million views! )

This is my primary issue with it. I like the feel that the genre goes for, but you simply cannot dance to it.

Not that dancing is the most important factor in musical enjoyment, but yer.

Hey, I can make those noises too. With my farts.

But does that make me an artist? I'm willing to wager "no."

The best part is, all these sad excuses for musicians actually think they're working hard. Everyone and their retarded brother can make a "dubstep" tune, just like everyone can play the harmonica like a champion, regardless of experience with the instrument.

It's a cheap and easy fad. What the Wii was to videogames, dubstep is to music. I'll give it another year or two before it goes the way of the trilobite and Clay Aiken.

I just don't get how much it's permeated in the club scene. How did that happen? It also bothers me established dance acts are 'evolving' into Dubstep  Save us!

It's like cools said, you can see the vibe it's going for, but beyond the bedroom of a chronic stoner there's just no place for it.

I was in the club last week mystified. No amount of booze was making it sound better. And the dance floor was this kind of mass of slowly rolling shoulders, people turning on the balls of their feet in a circular motion. I can only imagine you need to be totally off your face on hard drugs to get anything out of it, because it requires no effort to move.

I found out quite recently that I really like Dubstep. I wouldn't try dancing to it though.

Seems like a lot of y'all have a pretty narrow view of dubstep music. Not all of it is amped-up pill-popping fodder. Dubstep styles are varied and diverse.

This artform has come a long way to retrogress so far. :(

^ If that is what passes for decent music these days, then I don't even have a funny response this time. The medium is by and large dead, anyway. Stuff like this only serves to hammer the final nails into its coffin.

What is not surprising is that, most of the people who listen to that crap have, in all likelyhood, never even listened to a classical orchestrated piece in their lives, bar the few times when it was forced upon them in high school music class. Even if they started, they wouldn't have the ears for it. CUZ FUKK WHITE PEOPLE MUSIC, PLAYA! LIL WAYNE 4 EVAHH!!!

That is not to say that everyone's tastes cannot be improved; this is totally false. A few people are open minded enough to latch onto more intricate and epic sounds that demand an acquired taste to appreciate them, while simultaneously leaving behind their inclination for simplistic McMusic. But the vast majority cannot be helped.

I love Rod Stewart, but I don't even remember the last Carpenters song I heard.

At least Rod's great voice didn't hide behind a voice manipulator. Which is more than I can say for nearly every pop artist in the last decade.

No apologies necessary. They're only shooting themselves in the foot by going through life with a perverse preference for disgusting, banal sounds.

And it's not just "my taste in music" that has the higher ground. Ask any accomplished musician alive today and they'll tell you the same thing: music has become way too safe and sterile. Dubstep takes all the components for a great piece --build up accompanied by suspense, silent measures used in a clever and dramatic fashion, even melody, which is the basic requirement for any good track. If your notes are not in agreement, then that defeats the whole purpose.-- and throws them to the curb. It leaves you with nothing but one layer of (as mesh control joked) lethargic "wub", followed by another layer of something that sounds remotely like a fart, etc. Contrary to the surrealist beliefs of subhumans everywhere, music that doesn't give pleasure to the listener is utterly worthless.

Just out of curiosity Jon, what do you get out of this music? It couldn't possibly be enjoyment. Does it give you cred or something? This is not an attack, I am genuinely curious.

I like Dubstep, I've been listening to it for about 3 years now. Like most types of entertainment or art though 99% of it is total shit.

One of the big problems in the last 2 or years is the move to the overwhelming chainsaw bass wobbles, seems that most new people think that is the main component. It's not and it's usually not pleasant to listen to. The main component is setting a strong mood, just like any other type of music. If you listen to the better stuff it is all deceptively minimalist and subdued for the most part.

Silkie, Martyn, Scuba, Zomby, Skream, Falty DL, Boxcutta, Italtek etc. all have some solid material. Good stuff is out there you just have to find it and wading through all the crap makes it a chore.

And no I don't dance to it or know anything about the club scene in England nor do I do drugs and zone out to it. I do however enjoy it as background music when I am drawing and such.

I also like to think I have a pretty diverse taste in music and don't appreciate someone saying that just because I listen to something not only means I'm stupid but that I also don't know how to enjoy music. That's incredibly insulting.

Agreed. It's odd how it became so prevalent, but there is good stuff out there. Obviously people on this forum hate dance music, though; but, yeah, it is a shmups forum, so whatevs.

It's funny how all the examples of supposedly good dubstep posted in this thread don't sound like dubstep.

I don't mind dubstep, but for dancing I definitely prefer something less syncopated and faster. In my opinion French House was the best dance music in recent years.

I perceive mainstream electronic music, no, mainstream music as a whole, as essentially fad-driven. A new genre is "invented", everyone freaks out about it and it's everywhere for a year or two, then it falls out of fashion and electronic producers find another genre to champion and begin the fad cycle again. Basically, they feel the need to invent something new, a new reason to be excited, every few years in order to keep the hype machine going. In reality, this music isn't anything revolutionary at all, just a renaming or respinning or remixing of something already done. Music doesn't really occur in a vacuum, it's a constant progression of ideas, with each generation of new artists building upon the ideas of the previous one.

For this reason, I don't really pay much attention to musical movements, and instead just open my ears for whatever sounds good. Here are a few favorites that I'll never get bored of.

(Warning, a huge electronic dinosaur is approaching fast)

Tangerine Dream - Sequent C'

Kraftwerk - The Robots

DJ Shadow - Midnight in a Perfect World

Autechre - Second Bad Vilbel

Aphex Twin - Lichen

Sasha - Magnetic North

John Digweed - Knights of Columbus

Our own Renard Queenston is also an extremely talented electronic artist, if you've never listened to his works before.

I'm actually a fan of the earlier trance stuff (before it got silly) because there's a sense of progression - a sense of musically beginning at one place, and then traveling to another place. It's like taking a drive in musical form.

Dubstep is alright. I'm a fan of drum and bass so I like those crazy sounds. What annoys me though is when people mistake DnB or jungle for dubstep. That really rustles my jimmies.

Btw, does anyone have an idea what genre this song is? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ww0zVxbOk0A

I like many types of music as long as im in the mood for it. I used to be heavily into trance before it went to shit (Digweed is right up my street) Atm I like a bit of Drum and Bass http://www.youtube.com/user/Liquicity (whoops wrong link, ninjaedit FTW)

Some dubstep is ok but I really hate the over the top crap like Skykids 2nd link. That fad is just as bad as putting cheesy vocals on top of trance tracks http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DdadNg6Q ... 06&index=2 (This shit makes me want to kill kittens)
