Anyone feel like starting a thread in the hi-score forum? Got 20,5mil with Field ship (#161 on the PS3 leaderboards).

Also, alamone is #2. Isn't he one of the oldest members of the forum?

I'm still really loving this (and the iPhone version, just figured out you could hold the phone sidewars and make it hori for the bonus stages that come with Silver Hawk ..). But yeah, great game.

I don't suppose anyone has heard if the Darius, Metal Black etc ships from the iPhone DLC are coming to the 360/PS3 version?

I got the game when it came out from PSN but didn't really play it much. Now it's starting to grow on me, although I'm still quite bad at it.

Really liking the music!

Seconding this.

By the way does anyone know which weapon has the most scoring potential? Variable? Field?

Probably Field. Variable comes pretty close, its good for boss milking and some enemy waves (the blades cover a greater vertical area than the field) so it might have the highest potential when people learn to use it.

The #1 player uses Round. This weapon has the advantage of destroying bullets, so maybe on harder difficulties you can hold chains all stage long by doing that. Plus, it's actually effective against bosses, unlike Field.

Heh, guess I'll try Round next then. Still really hard to survive with it on nightmare mode. What was his score though? the highest score on XBLA leaderboard was 170mil with field if I remember right.

The first bonus level DLC for the XBLA version came out today, overpriced as you might expect.. 240msp. Anyone tried it yet? Bonus world 2 was pretty fun but I'm not using that many points unless world 3 is really good.

I think it's 192 mil, but I'll have to confirm that. I saw the guy posting at the Gamespot forums (ID: Loverice) and he mentions only playing on Nightmare, so it's likely all about chaining bullets. He also says there's potential for a 250+ mil score, but that sounds too far fetched.

By the way, I haven't unlocked Nightmare yet, but if it's as crowded with bullets as I think (as in Mushi Maniac or Ultra), then there's a lot of potential for the Gravity ship.

EDIT: Well the top score now is 197 mil.

Just bought this on my ipod4 and it's really outstanding. I love the evolution aspect of both the stages and the ship power ups, and the style and music are incredible!

Having loads of fun at the mo, so not sure if it's worth ponying up more for the Xbox/PS3 versions?

The new levels and bosses introduced in the XBLA/PSN ver. are longer and better than the older ones IMO (worlds 1-3 compared to 4-5). It keeps getting better until the end. the level and boss design on the later levels reminds me of radiant silvergun a bit and the music in them is just awesome, I hope someone rips the soundtrack or that it's released some point. This was probably discussed earlier in the thread too.

edit: oh yeah, I forgot this before. would be cool to list the various references the game makes to other shmups.
I just remembered two ones that no-one mentioned yet:
5-4 Boss intro is very similar to Area 2 Boss intro in Rez
5-4 Boss fires a laser grid just like one of the bosses from Raycrisis

Thanks for the info, I may well rinse the ipod version and then grab a console one around xmas. Are the extra stages etc part of the main game or the evolution tree? More importantly, are they at the end of the game rather than in the middle?

Cheers dude.

The extra stages are seperate from the main game, 12 of them come with the game and 24 are dlc. No extra ships or anything like on the iphone horizontal mode sadly.

I broke in and finally got this game for the iphone, and it is beyond awesome. It pays homage to the genre quite nicely, with interesting twists at each stage. The soundtrack is good, especially the dismal boss music (the bleakness reminds me of earthbound giygas battle).

ANYWAY

Im not sure if i should buy the download material or not. Essentially its 2 bucks for a ship (silver hawk, inter gray and black fly), and each ship comes with 2 additional stages. if you buy all three, you get a "special ship". Anyone recommend or dissuade from these purchases?

I'll probably end up getting it for xbox, too. I just haven't had time to play on console, and when things slow down i'll play it intensively for score on that system.

Yeah, I'm finding the extra ships a bit of a gyp considering the cost. If someone could recommend the best one (or the one that has the best extra stage) I might go for that.

Anyone here actually tried to/is trying to beat Nightmare difficulty?

The amount of bullets on the screen means you NEED to pick a ship that can deal with them. The field ship is absolutely out of question, makes things ugly fast. The only ships that can deal with bullets are Gravity, Round and Option.

Option has terrible scoring potential but it's a rather good survival ship. You can make a barrier around yourself and just sit there while tons of bullets are stopped by your options. Round can destroy bullets nicely but you'd probably need to move around too much to shoot them all. Haven't played much with it myself. And the Gravity ship is my favorite yet. You don't ever need to bother with suicide bullets as they're immediately sucked in by your shots.

I don't think any other ship is viable for nightmare difficulty.

I ended up downloading the extra ships. Stage wise i enjoy the ones that are part of the inter-gray download (then again i'm a fan of night striker). It's pretty neat, each stage is tailor made to the ship that it comes with. The hidden ship is the R-Gray2.

The game is now $5 on the PS Store until the end of the month. Get it now if you haven't already, for this price it's very much worth it.

I slogged through all 99 levels in the challenge mode and pretty much despise this game now.

I only played a few levels before deciding that this game is extremely obnoxious.

It's so fucking abrasive. I can't stand it.

Is it actually possible to 1cc challenge mode?
I mean, there are too many enemies that appear instantly at the bottom of the screen with no warning. And it's random, so you can't just memorise it...

Anyone considering making a "Music Stage Thread" for this?

Basically you name the song you use and the score/weapon etc etc. and how many chains or whatever.
The world would be a better place if there were less shooters and more dot-eaters.
