Good luck with that, at least this game isn't anal about what you need to do in a stage like 19XX. That game is as unfun as it as unfair, at least with missing gold or missing enemies you don't get rammed up the ass scoring wise like you would in 19XX.
Scoring aside, 19XX is an ok game.

Im using shmup mame. How do you use autofire and still be able to do the special that comes from holding the fire button?

I tried going into custom controls but that didn't seem to do anything. when I entered that menu it didn't let me do anything else.

turn "button 1 autofire" to "toggle" instead of "on" and use third button as "autofire on/off"

you need to press the literal number key (the ones with exclamation points and @ and such) of the button number you'd like pressed when you have the custom button thing highlighted in the custom buttons dialogue. it's weird.

The soundtrack in this game sounds like that hillbilly laid-back country guitar sound they have in the X360 Texas Hold 'Em Poker game. That's awesome!

So the only way to get health back is landing at the bases between certain stages?

Green ships that come in swarms drop silver POWs. They also drop an explosion thingy if you destroy them with the CHARGE shot but I'm not sure if it increases your health more.

I'm not taking part in STGT or anything but I do agree with this. I think if you're gonna use autofire in a game like this, you should at least cap it at the default rate and not some super fast game-breaking one.

Anything you do, you should be able to replicate on PCB. Otherwise not only is it unfair to the people who are actually playing on PCB, but you're basically modifying the game to suit your needs.

How about cabs that come in with autofire then? Arcadia for one separates scores done with and without autofire when they feel that the difference matters, and they're PCB only.

Whatever you call that. It gives you more health.

Seems reasonable if rapid-fire shoots a different weapon than hold-fire (see also R-Type, Soukyugurentai, Giga Wing, Blazing Star). If, as in Major Stryker or Tyrian, rapid-fire were a better version of hold-fire, I would see a case for blocking it.
Erm, no. You're supposed to choose to either mash buttons or to hold it for charge shot. It'd reasonable if the pcb would offer a "rapidfire-button", but it doesn't. See Ketsui and DDP:DOJ (where it does) and Giga Wing (as an example for where it doesn't) etc. I just don't like the STGT-games, and I like the rules even less.

1944 isn't supposed to be played with autofire.
I can probably tap a button faster than almost everyone here, should my finger be banned too? These aren't tests of who can hit a button the fastest. Autofire circuits are available for cabinets, and autofire is available to everyone in some form on MAME.

Is there any actual difference b/w the P1 & P2 ships? I'm guessing no, but presumably dex has us declare one or the other for a reason...

Next year, can we ban save states and restarts? Someone should compile a MAME build that lacks these features so everyone MUST play the games as if it was in an arcade. I'm only half-joking. Autofire however is totally cool. SAVE STATES sucks the fun outta everything.

to make it equal, everyone must use:

logitech classic keyboard 200(cheap tesco keyboard, none of that glowy gamer stuff)
windows button must be knifed out
left leg must be broken and must be supported with a calculator/ruler hybrid

I don't want people having an unfair advantage over me
