Does XBLA have any good RPGs?

Post by Casper<3 »

I'm looking for a menu based good jrpg type of game. If there are any, let me know so I can check them out.

Only ones I can think of are Vandal Hearts and the two Penny Arcade RPGs (obviously not a JRPG, but they are turn-based). There's also Half-Minute Hero, but that's not turn-based.

There's also a port of Phantasy Star II.

Costume Quest I heard was pretty cool.
IGMO - Poorly emulated, never beaten.

I'd rather get the MegaDrive/Genesis collection on X360, which is packed full of Sega games running through the same emulator used on XBLA, and usually priced around $10-$15.
Emulation is as you'd expect, and the graphics are all filter smeared, but it's the same you'd get on XBLA.

I recommend staying away from Costume Quest and the PA games, they really aren't worth it. Faery is another little game that rips off turn based jrpgs, and I think it's better than the others, but it's still not very good and obviously targeted towards females (only bought it cause my gf wanted to play it, and my impressions are based entirely on watching her play)
Half Minute Hero, however, is a great game, but it's hardly an RPG, it's more of an arcade puzzle.

The two Puzzle Quest games are also great, again, not really an RPG, but bejeweled type puzzle games that are really heavy on RPG elements (complete with stats, magic spells, monster encounters, treasures, crafting, etc.), and the result is a billion times better than you'd expect.

The indie section has quite a few that appear influenced by NES Dragon Quest games. And a couple roguelikes if you're into them. I've only browsed though so I don't know how good they are.

Regarding XBLIG -

Breath of Death + Cthulhu Saves the World are decent, and JRPG influenced with a turn based combat system, don't know about the rest.

There's also a pretty good roguelike from the winter uprising campaign, forgot its name (it's very generic), but I like it a lot.

In a similar vein, there was a recent Indie (I think) release titled Sequence, which is basically a rhythm game with RPG elements - I've only played the demo myself, but reviews have been positive.

The Breath of Death 7/Cthulhu Saves the World dev blog, if you're into that sort of thing. I've tried neither, but I will assume there is worse things you could do with $4.

They've also ported their games to Steam, if you're into that sort of thing.
PSX Vita: Slightly more popular than Color TV-Game system. Almost as successful as the Wii U.
