Single screen non-platformer, non-shooter, non-maze games.

Post by Drum »

Any I may not have heard about?

Some examples of what I'm talking about:
Disco No. 1
Kram
Qix
Bubbles
Quantum
Motos
Fantasy
Dig Dug
Electric Yo Yo
Loco Motion
Reactor
Runaway
Libble Rabble
Phozon
Pengo
Snax 'n Jackson
Pengo

(Just goin' through my MAME list)

Stuff that doesn't comfortably fit into any particular genre, basically.
IGMO - Poorly emulated, never beaten.

Most Game & Watch titles I can think of, as well as most of those.
I don't quite consider Pirate Ship Higemaru as a maze game. A maze where you can easily take the walls apart is hardly a maze.
Tetris with Cardcaptor Sakura.
Binary Land - a "double maze" game so to speak. Harbinger of Kuri Kuri Mix, Excellent Bifuraction and double mode in Raiden III.
You may also want to stretch your single screen game definition (whatever it is) to embrace the likes of Rakugaki Showtime (toss 'em up?) and Trap Gunner, where limited visibility is more of a technical limitation (in the latter) or "cinematic" zooming (in the former) than core gameplay concept.
The rear gate is closed down
The way out is cut off

Gal's Panic 8)

Oldest gamer in the world plays Bomberman. That game might fit into this extra category of single screen, non-platformer, and non-maze games 8)

Sindbad
Pit Pot
Dig Dug 2
Volfied
Zenji
Gee Bee / Pinball Spectactular (same thing, really)
The entire class of Sprint-like games (Super Sprint, Badlands, Off-Road, etc).. though that's 'genre'
Joust 1 & 2
Circus Atari (there's an arcade original but I forgot the name)
Samurai (1979 Sega game, dunno if that is its proper name)
Zookeeper

There's also a neat game where you guide a balloon that's always swinging back and forth through a maze of spikes.. it's like kuru kuru kururuin but 20 years earlier.

Reactor rocks :)

Highway Crossing Frog!
PSX Vita: Slightly more popular than Color TV-Game system. Almost as successful as the Wii U.

I was reminded of Magical Drop and Bubble Bobble. Also, try Arkanoid. I used to play the hell outta that and its clones back in the mid-to-late 80s. It was released for the Nintendo DS and the special edition included the roll-on controller 8)

Yeah, SquareEnix should've released the cool Taito DS accessory of it's minature arcade spinner/rotary knob controller in the USA. Sure plays great with the USA versions of Space Puzzle Bobble and DS Arkanoid indeed (not to mention both Space Invaders Extreme & SIE-2 as well).

Would've been nice if the recent release of Atari's Greatest Hits Vol. 2 on the DS had built-in support for the DS rotary knob controller to play a 1:1 game of Tempest (the gameplay/game graphics are spot-on).

Psikyo's Gunbarich PCB does have some Arkanoid-like gamplay/game mechanic elements despite having dedicated digital joystick support rather than utilizing a true arcade rotary knob spinner setup. It, too, uses just a single screen layout for it's overall presentation.

Another Arkanoid clone to play/own would be Atari Games' Off The Wall PCB (circa 1991) with it's single screen setup and built-in support for both digital joysticks or rotary knob spinner setups (although it plays much with a true spinner setup IMO thus to aim for higher overall scores). Is a fun game to play with up to three players simultaneously (the 3rd player's controller scheme is interfaced directly from the PCB itself).
