Meteos and the puzzle genre
Tetris is all you need in life. Not just for puzzle games. Any game. Tetris is the only game you need. Imagine, I might've been learning calculus in math class, instead of playing on my TI-83. Hail to Tetris, the greatest game of all time.
All the Puyo Puyo games are great, too. And Bust-a-Move/Puzzle Bobble is also the shit. Mouja (often mistranliterated as Moujiya) is fucking brilliant. It's like Puyo Puyo, but with kitties and Japanese coinage. Money Puzzle Exchanger is its better known cousin, which takes the same concept and applies it to Magical Drop, another great game. Personally, I think MPE fails at matching the excellence of either game it rip-offs. For more great cat action, Uo Poko is great stuff, quite possibly Cave's finest hour. And they recently rehashed it with Mushihime Sama, so it's probably easy to find in Japanese arcades and might even get a console port (calloo callah!).
I'm ambivalent toward Puzzle Fighter. I've never gotten really comfortable with the combo system. But one major problem is that there's no solo play mode. I would really like to just play myself, not having to worry about trash blocks.

Are there any ports of said game? Or some reviews and pics? The ones on system16.com are a bit blurry...Thanks in advance.PaCrappa wrote:Buncha fucking bedwetters at this forum. The only thing that approaches Mr Driller quality is Star Trigon. Which, not so coincidentally, also happens to have been developed by Project Driller.

Interesting little tidbit about: The guy that came up with the idea for Meteos is the same guy that helped create Super Smash Bros!! The menus and title theme instantly remind me of Melee.
I think Meteos is also a Nintendo franchise, so will we see a sequal or maybe one of those little Geolyte dudes in the next Smash Bros?

oh yeah, if you live in the UK, don't worry about importing Drill Spirits. From what I heard, the European version has everything the Japanese version has. Only the US version is missing single cart multi and the Dristone mode.
Meteos is owned by Q Entertainment. The reason the guy who helped create Smash Bros worked on it is becuase he left HAL for that company. Nintendo only published Meteos in the US.

Oh man, I definitely need to get Mr. Driller Ace. I love Drill Land, but I barely touch my GameCube and even less frequently play DL, even though it's a blast everytime I play. But throw in some portability, I can definitely see myself playing that game all the fucking time.

No, Nintendo published the US release, but Bandai still owns the IP as far as I know.FatCobra wrote:Interesting little tidbit about: The guy that came up with the idea for Meteos is the same guy that helped create Super Smash Bros!! The menus and title theme instantly remind me of Melee.

yeah, we in the US got shafted when it comes to Mr. Driller. The battery was removed from the US GBC Mr. Driller, Mr. Driller G, Mr Driller Ace, and Mr. Driller Drill Land stayed in Japan, Mr. Driller DS is missing drill stone and single cart multi from the EU and JP releases, and Mr. Driller 2 just came to the US a few months ago (It was a launch game in Japan and came to Europe much earlier). I'm glad I imported Mr. Driller Ace. If I had a DS, I would be importing Drill Spirits too, though I'm thinking of just impoting it anyway. I really want to get the GameCube one, though. Connectivity with Mr. Driller Ace and a variety of modes not in other Mr. Driller games. Mr. Driller G sounds like a good choice for an import too. However, I have no idea how much it goes for or if it has redbook audio or not. For the us in the US, importing is the best way to go for Mr. Driller. Europe has it better, but I think they may be missing G, Ace, and Drill Land too.jp wrote:BrianC wrote:oh yeah, if you live in the UK, don't worry about importing Drill Spirits. Must import...
Speaking of Bandai, there was a very odd port of Mr. Driller for Wonder Swan. It missing the time attack mode like the GBC version and it doesn't seem to have tate. I was disappointed what what I tried of it. It's not bad, but it could have been so much more.

Super Bust-a-move for PS2 was a piece of shit, i've heard. a friend of mine rented it, he said Bust-a-move '99 (which i own, for PSX) was much better.
as for a suggestion: bust-a-move 99, and Twinkle Star Sprites for DC.

It ain't like Bust a Move 99 is the gem of the series or anything. The first four are all better. I like the first and the fourth best. 99 is fine but I see that one as starting the downhill slide that the series is currently on. And it really isn't that much of a downhill slide but the glory days are definitely long gone for that series.
Anyone who likes Puzzle Bobble/Bust a Move would do well to check out Pop 'n Pop for Taito F3 or PSX. That is a true underrated gem in the puzzle genre.

Umm...Bust A Move '99 is actually Puzzle Bobble 3DX. It's a special version of Bust A Move 3. It's not Bust A Move 5. I think it's lame how the PSP Puzzle Bobble doesn't even have two players (according to a review I read anyway).PaCrappa wrote:It ain't like Bust a Move 99 is the gem of the series or anything. Really? Dang, I guess I don't like 3 as much as I like PB and PB4 then. I obviously haven't played it much if I thought 99 was a whole new game. I'll have to do the side by side with Bust a Move 3 and 99.BrianC wrote:Umm...Bust A Move '99 is actually Puzzle Bobble 3DX. It's a special version of Bust A Move 3. It's not Bust A Move 5. For those that have Meteos, which is your preferred control method? I tend to use the D-Pad more, but I have been using the stylus and I find that I can get better scores out of it, but it's not as fun as mashing the buttons in a hetic manner. Also, what's your favorite planet so far? I like Yooj at the moment.

Yes. I haven't played 3 too much, but from what I heard, it's too similar to PB2. 4 added that cool pulley system. I admit that I like the GBA Super Bust-A-Move, though (though I do think the new art and characters are lame).PaCrappa wrote:Really? Dang, I guess I don't like 3 as much as I like PB and PB4 then. Well I got mine about a year and a half ago from Mak for like $85 US. It was never as popular as the Driller games so I bet it's cheaper by now. If you enjoy puzzle games in general and appreciate the Driller aesthetic, you can't go wrong. I have had this in my cab for four months straight now.Valgar wrote:Pa, what is the going price on Star Trigon? I am intrigued. Nothing quite like learning about a new gem.
