Mock if old, any feedback on this? It looked kind of chaotic and fun.
Went live today, it's $9.99.

New Galaga on PSN?

Re: New Galaga on PSN?
Galaga Legions DX you mean?
If you already have legions I'd say it's not worth buying unless you liked it a lot. It's a good game but pretty much all the enemy waves, etc. as well as music are taken out of Legions. They stretched stuff out and made it 9 levels instead of 5 as well, which I find pretty pointless. The Championship level is clearly the most fun of the bunch though.
The gameplay changes are good, instead of deploying guns it's a twin stick shooter, and you get two firing modes: straight shot and a split shot to shoot in multiple directions. Oh yeah, and you want to point blank stuff like crazy. The game also has a speed up mechanic like pac-man CE, the further you get the faster the game gets, especially on the last area of each level where seconds can mean a lot of score.
It also speeds up way more on Hard mode, I don't think normal difficulty is worth playing if you're a shmup fan.. it's very easy to survive and slower as well as giving you huge slowdown if you're about to die. Much lower scoring potential as well.
For me playing through Galaga Legions adventure mode trying to survive through the whole game was more memorable, but this is a much more polished score attack game. Still largely a memorizer but the speed up mechanic mixes it up.

Re: New Galaga on PSN?
It's also on XBLA, released some weeks ago. It's not bad, but it's purely a score attack game (it's *very* easy to complete, even on Hard), unlike the 1st game. However, ironically, there aren't that many intricacies to the scoring, which is a shame, as it comes across as much more shallow than the 1st game.

Never even heard of Legions. I'm way out of the loop, I guess.

Legions didn't make it to PS3.cj iwakura wrote:Never even heard of Legions. I'm way out of the loop, I guess.
I didn't get DX for a lot of the reasons Zaarock listed off. I wasn't even all that fond of Legions to be honest. It was good, but not good enough to purchase a slight upgrade.
So you're fortunate. I'd say grab DX seeing as how you never got to play Legions. I fell into that category with Pac-Man CE. I didn't bite on CE, but bought DX and enjoyed that hell out of it.
Re: New Galaga on PSN?
Played the Demo and despite it's simplicity I'm tempted to pick this up...since I picked up Pac-Man Championship Edition DX already off PSN.
Of course, I'm broke, so it'll have to wait a bit. DLC for my other games takes priority, however.

The world would be a better place if there were less shooters and more dot-eaters.

Re: New Galaga on PSN?
I played the demo. Great visuals, but the gameplay felt a bit too chaotic. I was hoping it'd just be the normal game prettied up, a la Pac Man CE.
Maybe if it goes down in price, but this doesn't feel worth $10.

If you like the structure of PacManCEDX [replaying short, quick levels, improving on increasingly smaller aspects of score execution; leaderboards], then you should buy it.
I personally feel the Legions was a pretty brilliant, albeit incomplete, attempt at modernizing Galaga.
DX completes the effort.

I agree; it's almost impossible to go back to the prior treatments Namco gave these games.
Not sure if that speaks more to the brilliance of the successor, or the weakness of the predecessor.
In the case of Pacmancedx, I'd argue the former.
Not sure about Legions DX yet...but I do like it's music.
