Check some of these posts I did before (big PC doujin STG fan here):

http://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.ph ... ia#p568206

You can also try rancor's store, TokyoShmups.

http://www.sk8tokyo.com/shmup/

Notice that many are a bit expensive retail STGs but most don't have any kind of DRM so they really bring back the golden days of PC gaming.

Thanks for the plug, Observer!

Yeah, check my site - I have a fairly large collection of freeware / demo soft that you can download for free. Just click on the next-to-last link in the left column. Be sure to get the games in red if you're not familiar with them.

Hydorah is fun times.

I really liked Dan Da Dan, though you realise it's a bit undercooked when you played it for a while:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=08prtYUKx2Y

(good luck finding a dl link)

There's also Tyrian 2000 and Raptor Call of the Shadows.

G-Type is an awesome fan mixup of R-Type and Gradius (with a bit of Darius thrown in) that is better than a bunch of games in those series':

http://www.megagames.com/freeware/g-type

Genetos is a fun game, but don't play it on the easier settings.

Warning Forever - one of the very few shooters with small hitbox I enjoy. There was a pretty good Flash remake out there, but I'm afraid it might be overcooked by the dev at this point (I didn't like the sound of his "improvement" ideas).
Yalkina STG - I recall enjoying it, but it's been a while. Not sure how I'd like it now.

Try the trial modes of StellaVanity and Crimzon Clover. I'd also suggest Eden's Aegis. Great game.

Kamui is one of the best shooters, period. Good start! Fun game to just blast through, with meaty weapons and fiery destruction, but playing it for score reveals killer level designs demanding a constant juggle of shooting, lasering and lockons for 100% destruction at max multiplier. Not a wasted second.

Samidare is a good choice if you like short, intense score attack shooters. It might seem a bit plain if you're not into optimising runs, but it gets seriously nerve-wracking when you're going for every last bonus item and second on the clock. Quite a pretty game too (godly boss explosions), with a nice thumping soundtrack.

Try Raiden III, It has a stage select mode that lets you replay stages once you've cleared them.

Ty once again, i live in England so was hoping to get a downloadable game, im getting jamestown as thats all i can find ,from steam(other dl sites are available:p)Seems there is a hole in the market for these type of games to dl.Wish they would do some dreamcast shooters converted like they did with their dreamcast collection (crazy taxi ,bass fishing ,sonic and another game).I would pay good money for that

You'll have to join us and the STG crowd in the Steam forums to soften Valve's attitude towards shooters. With the recent "crash" of XBLIG, there is pretty much a bunch of titles that could end up on PC. But, as I said, Valve don't seem to be fans of the genre AT ALL. So Jamestown might have opened the gates for traditional shooters after the incredible disaster Razor2 was (the other vertical shooter on Steam).

Cloudphobia can be purchased from the developer's site via PayPal and you get a DRM-free game! Seriously, this is one of the nicest PC doujin shooters around.

Note: Raptor and Tyrian have two common issues with control.

When the control is held in a direction it's an initial slow movement followed by a significant acceleration in the direction if the controller is still held in a direction. Movement therefore becomes lots of taps for precise movement or holding the control to sweep to the other side rapidly.

btw it looks like Rockin Android is coming to steam, no idea what games they have planned for it. My guess would be that all the PS3 exclusives are steamward bound

Look at the Development forum and see all the games that are available there. Xeno Fighters R, Rozyrg's games, Shining Armour, GMOSSE (though there's not much game in it at the moment), TF4R, and if you hard enough there's Papilio which just went public too.

Also, GwangeDash and everything that everyone else has already mentioned. For Tyrian the easiest way to play it is as OpenTyrian.

As has been mentioned, Hellsinker is a brilliant game, if a little hard to legally get hold of.

On the freeware side, there's Eden's Aegis, Blue Wish Resurrection Plus, Cho Ren Sha 68k, yadayadayada.

I only ever registered that stuff in the back of my mind, didn't effect my enjoyment.

Yep. Hellsinker throws some helps, especially thanks to its rank management (Stella+life stock control+extend rates). It's really complicated and hard to pick up but once you get the hang of the basics, there is now way back. Really awesome shooter!

By the way, the guy wasn't dead or anything. Hellsinker is now available for sale via Amazon.co.jp.

There is also a plethora of merchandise like mousepads and shit. Pretty nice. Pity the yen/dollar parity went to hell and it'll only get worse...

edit: Diadra Empty is also for sale at Amazon. Holy shit, these are pretty much the crowning of awesome of the hori/vertical doujin STGs!

Argh, I didn't read that part. Sorry.

But if there are more copies for sale or in stock, rancor might be able to get a hold of copies from both games. He'll be back in August so there might be a chance. Just mark Tokyo Shmups or drop him a message/reminder. Those two games are really awesome along with anything by Siter Skain and Samidare.

Looks like you can order from amazon.co.jp but you need to use freight forwarding.

I put a order in for Hellsinker and Diadra Empty.
