How is the Darius series?

Post by Casper<3 »

I played Darius Twin earlier tonight and was kinda DG'n it. Was wondering how the rest of the games in the series were? What's the best one?

I like Twin, but it's a guilty pleasure. Of the most common Darius games, it is actually the weakest, I'd say.

The two best Darius games I've played are Darius Gaiden and G.Darius.

If you want more SNES Darius, try Darius Force. It is a better game than Twin, and has some pretty cool levels. It's harder than Twin, but never really goes over the top. The North American release is called "Super Nova." In addition, most ports of Darius II are called Sagaia.

If you like Darius Twin, you will probably LOVE the other games, since they are pretty much all better than Twin. :)

My favorite are Darius Gaiden, G Darius and Darius Burst.

Darius Force on SFC is also very good. This is the main series:

Darius series has the most consistent quality of almost any shooter I've played. Don't think I'll ever get bored of these games. :)

Is Darius Burst cheap yet? I don't think it ever got localized, but I'd buy it on the cheap.

Come to Casino arcade in London (like CIT's planning  ) and you can find out how fun Darius Burst Another Chronicle is (I know I keep going on about it, but the Casino crew are still quite shocked and excited about the fact we have the cab in!)

EDIT: Someone remind me. Which Darius offers an easy 1CC using that 'extra fast' autofire?

Cool! Next time I am back in London (definitely late October 2011) I will come in to play Darius Burst as I haven't as yet - cheers!

Any chance we can have tatsujin 2 and dogyyun back in play around that time to at all?

Darius Gaiden is a total joke when you cheat with autofire. It really is sad that so many people play it that way.
Of course, that's just an opinion.

I wonder how many darius topics we have that have derailed into autofire talk after one of these posts? :p

Darius!

Without question, the gameplay definitely is flawed here and there. But on the bright side, it has one of the most terrific designs in a shmup series and it's as close to surrealism as a shmup can be. Especially check out Darius Gaiden!

Besides unbelievably awesome bosses (fish all over the place, surely can't get better than this!), Darius has the best video game music I have ever listened to. It builds up such a strong atmosphere - one of the very few shmups I play for the experience alone and not to get a highscore.

Scorewise only G.Darius and maybe Gaiden is interesting, haven't played Burst yet.

Well, if I use a rapid fire controller I can "cheat" with rapid fire on the Interplay/Cyberfront PC version of Darius Gaiden as well.

If it's really that bad, bump up the difficulty. Sure, Golden Ogre goes down in nothing flat but there is still a boss battle for every one after that. Ancient Dozer gets more damage quickly but still gets to fire its laser cannons, still goes in the air and does its patterns. Queen Fossil still gets the patterns off since it still takes considerable damages to take it out. And so on.

All the rapid fire does is prevent each boss battle from becoming an epic battle due to way too slow of a continuous firing rate when the button is held down, and prevents having to mash on the button for extra fast fire. By the way, I can accomplish close to that firing rate in shorter bursts if I alternate between two fire buttons when playing Darius Gaiden on Taito Legends 2 PS2--so it's not cheating for sure.

Oops! What have I started?! Yeah - we should try and avoid focussing soley 'autofire debate' (shouldn't have mentioned it should I?) and keep on on talking about the attributes of the series as a whole (though I guess you can argue the whole autofire thing is an inevitable part of that overview.).

And all of you who have a chance to play DB:AC; you gotta do it four player! Use the Casino thread to see when others are down there!

I'm almost positive Darius Burst isn't on the US PSN. How'd you guys get it?

Well, how tough is it to get a EU PSN card? :P I know how to make multi-national accounts already.
