Otakon 2011
Re: Otakon 2011
I think I'm going to be there. I hadn't planned on going, but long story short, I lost a bet and now I need to man up.
Re: Otakon 2011
Haven't heard anything back regarding this convention, so I'll just mention this:
My experience with Otakon has been that the schedule is packed and you must pick-and-choose which events you go to.
I'll be prioritizing any panels and other unique events that I want to see, because these are one-time-only experiences. On the other hand, I can game and/or shop at any time from home. That said, I'm sure there will be some dead time at some point in the schedule where there is nothing I really want to see. So it's a given that I will be in the game room at some point, I just cannot predict when.
When I get to the game room, I'll be looking to play some shooting games first, of course =D. I wonder if I will find any. If I find them, I will play! (But only for a bit, haha).

Re: Otakon 2011
I had time to hit up the game room a couple times because certain events I wanted to see were impossible to get into with the lines >_<.
Shmups had a fair turnout this Friday!
I spotted the following:
- DDP DFK Black Label
- Akai Katana Shin
- Mushi Futari
- Raiden IV
- Ikaruga
- One of the Raiden Fighters games (not sure which one, not as familiar with this series)
- One of the Deathsmiles games
and maybe some others I missed/forgot.
I saw one person come very close to clearing Mushi Futari Arrange Original on a blind play, it was really impressive. Lots of other newcomers dropped by, got their butts kicked, but had a lot of fun in the process, haha. I think a lot of people there left with a genuine interest in the games and the people that developed them. I hope so, anyway.
I'll probably be there again whenever I can manage it tomorrow, so hit me up if you see me!

Re: Otakon 2011
Even better turnout Saturday. In addition to all the games from Friday, I saw both Deathsmiles games, Twinkle Star Sprites on DC, and Gradius III. In total:
- DDP DFK Black Label
- Akai Katana Shin
- Mushi Futari
- Raiden IV
- Ikaruga
- Raiden Fighters (Aces?)
- Deathsmiles 1 & 2
- Gradius III
- Twinkle Star Sprites DC
Honestly, I was somewhat impressed that the selection of games was this good. I would have been excited to find even one game. The shooting games were packed. Not drawing a crowd like the fighting games/tournaments per se, but people were on the games pretty much continuously... Futari and DFK especially. People were all up on Deathsmiles, too. I only got a chance to play Futari once, it was totally monopolized =(.
It was totally worth it, though. This was my first time playing Mushi Futari, and it was a ton of fun! Totally lives up to it's hype as a fun game. I was able to get midway through Stage 3, I think, on a blind credit of Original mode. Challenging, but I think the difficulty level is pretty good for my skill level, as compared to Ketsui which roflstomps me atm, haha. In any case, the score was good enough for the no. 2 slot that day.
I had the good fortune to bump into fellow forumite Ratikal while there. He's good people, it was fun to hang out =D. At the time, he was putting in a nice credit on the Ketsuipachi Arrange mode. I could kinda tell he had played the game before, because he was the only person all weekend who A) Knew about the Arrange Mode and B) Actually held a chain in this game, haha.
All in all, a great time. I did my part to spread some shmup evangelism =).

Re: Otakon 2011
DFK BL and Akai Katana Shin were my copies - I meant to switch them out at some point (I had every Cave port to date on me, plus Bulletsoul) but I wasn't really in the game room long enough on Saturday to mess with it. Having another JP 360 available would have been nice... this was a pretty weak Otakon in terms of shmup availability, especially compared to last year. I'm just glad I was able to fill in the void a bit.
... I actually had IDOLM@STER Live For You on me too, now that I think about it...

That's par for the course at any convention - you have to split the attendance so that you just don't have all the attendees gathered in one spot at all times.Blackbird wrote:My experience with Otakon has been that the schedule is packed and you must pick-and-choose which events you go to.
Re: Otakon 2011
Ah man, you should of posted something, we could of met up too! I brought my JP Xbox too with Ketsui, Eschatos, and some other games. They said I couldn't set it up though.
Oh well, it was really fun meeting you Blackbird. Really fun to see a variety of people play shmups and talking about them. Though, it was kind of enraging when you see people only using the shot or laser. But haha, oh well.
