Gunstar Heroes
Goemon/"Legend Of The Mystical Ninja" (I'd get Goemon since the U.S. version was censored)

Gunstar Heroes is not a Super Nintendo game.

There aren't really any decent shooters for the system other than Jikkyou Oshaberi Parodius (sp).

Some good games:

Demon's Crest
Spanky's Quest
Lufia 2
Psycho Dream
Run Saber
Super Star Wars series
Yoshi's Island
Kirby's Dreamland 3
Metal Warriors
Tetris Attack
IGMO - Poorly emulated, never beaten.

Well, you got the obvious ones:

Zelda: LTTP
Super Metroid
Super Mario World
Super Mario World 2
Super Mario All-Stars(if you want to count a compilation)
Chrono Trigger
Final Fantasy III
Secret Of Mana
Mega Man X

Then you got some other choices:

Seiken Densetsu 3(Secret Of Mana 2)
R-Type III(usually considered the best shmup on the system)
Sparkster
Super Castlevania IV
Super Ghouls N' Ghosts(not for everyone, but I love it)
Contra III

Those are probably the "best", in my list, but there's a lot to choose from. SNES/SF was a GREAT system, although the processor was a bit slow, which meant it didn't have many shmups. If you're really looking for those, a lot of people like Axelay(weird Mode 7 effects ruin it for me) and Space Megaforce. I don't really like them, but they're popular.

Wild Guns
Michael Jordan: Chaos in the Windy City
Majyuuou
The last two aren't all that essential, but have decent gameplay and overall draker tone than your average SNES game. Wild Guns not noly is tons of fun, but also one of SNES games flipping off that Sega's Blast Processing™ talk.

Axelay is awesome, not in that it has a complex scoring system or any of that but in that its just damn fun to play and looks/sounds amazing :)

super turrican 2 is a badass run'n'gun too completely void of the stifness of other turrican titles.

Super Probotector - best game on the SNES.

Well you can safely avoid the Super Star Wars series (only the first one is remotely playable, the second one is a joke - almost so-bad-its-good), but I can definitely vouch for Demon's Crest - that game is a must-play if only for the strongest atmosphere of any 16 bit game ever produced.
Especially if you like the Castlevania games, I'd say it's Capcom's response to Castlevania, too bad they never followed up on it.

Not a top title, but a solid game and one of the system's lesser known gems (and often available dirt cheap) - Front Mission: Gun Hazard. It's an action game unlike the other Front Mission games, and it looks beautiful.

I'm sure that list is a lot more "general" than one compiled by people on shmups.system11.org, though :)

Yes, it's one of the most beautiful games on the SFC, really evocative and atmospheric. It's a toughie though, it has a purposely restrictive control scheme that can be frustrating at first, but that's what makes it so unique.

Not if you want 'Whirlo', the European (not UK) only release with English language. Then you'll need about $200.

But the Japanese one is fine, you just need a guide to pass a small 5 minute puzzle section in the middle.

Since you're playing an emulator anyways, you should hunt down the unreleased Star Fox 2. Maybe it wasn't polished enough for release but it's still really enjoyable to play. You can also play the Satellaview games, like BS F-Zero Grand Prix 2. The first BS one (stands for something satellite related, I forget :P ) is just a different version of the F-Zero we got but does have an extra track. Those are still really entertaining racers with excellent music, GP2 has some ridiculous courses. Try the original Pilotwings if you've never played it, speaking of excellent music (sorry, all these tunes make me super nostalgic... lol @ the charlie brown comment on that vid).

Super Mario RPG is still unrivaled by the M&L and Paper Mario series. So many little hidden things in that game. Earthbound is still one of my favorite games ever, such a strange and beautiful game... but it might be hard for some folks to get into today. It's all about the kitschy atmosphere and spacy beats, the gameplay is pretty much plain vanilla Dragon Quest style stuff... but it's easy to see why it's a cult classic.

Sim Ant might be worth trying for a couple minutes. It's a pretty clever premise of trying to colonize well enough outside in the yard that you can start to take over the household. It will freak you the hell out when you first encounter the spider... something really uncalming about the whole food chain thing when you're controlling a tiny, relatively slow ant and the screen scrolling over to reveal that huge hairy beast.

Super Adventure Island is a pretty straightforward platformer, but has a funky soundtrack by Yuzo Koshiro. Might be fun for some scoreplay or to try and 1 Life it. Super Adventure Island 2 is more like the later Wonderboy/Monster World games.

Sorry I overdid it with the music links.

Never heard of this before, but you play as a Red Devil from Ghost's N Goblin's. That's pretty cool.

I'd say it's one of the few master pieces from the 16-bit generation that really stands out. Maybe not among the top tier of 16-bit games (although pretty close!), but definitely a unique acquaintance that will stay with you. The music alone is so deep and haunting that it will suck you right into the game's dystopian universe.

I think this short video says it all.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QDA27Hv8_eg

edit: Oh, and it's a sequel to the two Gargoyle's Quest games which also puts you in the shoes of the Red Arremer (here known as Firebrand), but those are platform games with RPG elements. Demon's Crest, while still slightly open-ended and with lots of abilities and weapons to acquire, is more of a hardcore platform game a la Castlevania.

Also, it has one of the toughest TLB battles of any platform game.

I got and was playing this recently. It's definitely polished. There is a little bit of a language barrier on the JP one though, you need a little help to figure out exactly what's going on at some points.

The Super Star Wars games are fine, especially Jedi (though they are all held back by the occasional bit of terrible platforming). The first one is probably the worst, on balance. They're all better than CV4, which mostly just has the music and occasionally inspired piece of atmosphere to recommend it, and is otherwise a pretty turgid & clunky platformer despite its ludicrously inflated rep.

To be honest, I only remember Jedi from renting it when it just came out, and I remember it looking awesome but being hard as fuck - Empire Strikes Back is a monstrosity though, I can't imagine anyone taking that game seriously.

I wasn't very good at that kind of games back then, so I believe that. But buying Empire Strikes Back many years later and hardly being able to beat the first stage, I didn't feel like going back to the two others either.
The second "shmup" stage where you're flying a land speeder that literally takes up half the screen must have been a cruel joke from the developers.
