Microsoft XBOX 360 Arcade Hardware ?
Ive been thinking , Wouldnt it be wise for microsoft to produce some 360 Arcade hardware ? It can obviously make excellent arcade games & Would probably be pretty cheap , You could run online leaderboards too
Just seems a better option to me , Rather than companys like cave trying to squeeze all they can from the SH3 board
After playing Akai it seems the Zetsu mode is the true arcade mode as its not limited to 256 Gold , As someone said on here before they rekon cave made the gold limit to 256 as the SH3 board couldnt handle anymore on screen and would probably slow down to a crawl
Just a thought , What do you think

I don't know how well that would work with their low res 2d art style (can the 360 do arcade resolutions?). Their 3d games could probably benefit from that, seeing how they all come out on 360 anyway. I'd expect they are sticking with their older hardware both because of the production costs and that their coders are already doing awesome things with it, but I don't really know. It'd be nice to hear the designers at Cave talk about their choices!

Cave stopped developing for the sh3 (matsuri is an exception, I think they just had stocks of boards).
Now almost all arcade development is on pc based hardware

OK, here's a dumb question, but a little off-topic. Is it definitely true that there could be no more games for the SH3? I'm pretty sure they should move on to the SH4 in hi-res 2D, not the stupid 3D PC hardware like DSII.BeruBeru wrote:Cave stopped developing for the sh3 (matsuri is an exception, I think they just had stocks of boards).

PC developing means nothing if its 2d or 3d, all fighting game for example except games from konami are developed for pc (most even windows based, with the exception of virtua fighter 5 which runs on linux), examples include blazblue, arcana heart, the latest power instinct, the latest revision of melty blood, daemon bride and aquapazza.

People have been saying Cave is finished with SH3/have a stock pile of SH3 boards for a while now, but I don't see any evidence of it. Be interesting to hear anything concrete as personally I'd like them to stick to SH3.
Re: Microsoft XBOX 360 Arcade Hardware ?
Why would you want them to stick to SH3? They've already done everything they could do with it.

What hardware did akai katana run on? I don't think it was that pc thing that ds2 ran on.

How do you know?Bee Cool wrote:Why would you want them to stick to SH3? They've already done everything they could do with it.
People were saying that before DFK BL and AK and yet they're both exceptional arcade games. The one game in recent years Cave hasn't made using 2D/SH3 was DS2 and it suffered because of it.
Fair enough if they decide to change - I just hope their games retain the same look and feel.
Re: Microsoft XBOX 360 Arcade Hardware ?
They also both completely shit themselves at certain points on actual hardware because they are running it so far past the redline at this point. DFKBL in particular has some infamous moments where THE PLAYER SHIP DISAPPEARS (among many other things) because the object limit has been exceeded so badly.dan76 wrote:People were saying that before DFK BL and AK and yet they're both exceptional arcade games.

Any vidoes of that, i want to see someone play with a disappearing/flickering ship.nZero wrote:They also both completely shit themselves at certain points on actual hardware because they are running it so far past the redline at this point. If you mean adding unnecessary glowing particles around every god damn thing that moves (including bullets)...yeah I think they've pretty much reached the wall for # of simultaneous objects on screen. Strip out the unnecessary eye candy and there is probably plenty of headroom left to do innovative things on SH3 if they really wanted to.Bee Cool wrote:Why would you want them to stick to SH3? Re: Microsoft XBOX 360 Arcade Hardware ?
But that goes against Cave's entire approach to game developmentDave_K. wrote:Strip out the unnecessary eye candy

Re: Microsoft XBOX 360 Arcade Hardware ?
OOOORRRRRRR... they could do the sensible thing and do their 2D graphics in HD like their console remakes.Trevor spencer wrote:It can do 480I but i rekon they could mod it to do 240P
Another reason to ditch SH3 is the uncomfortably close emulation.
Re: Microsoft XBOX 360 Arcade Hardware ?
The Strong Mode run on the official DVD should show it. EOJ described the effect pretty well in his critique of Cave's past 2 years, posted in April.AntiFritz wrote:Any vidoes of that, i want to see someone play with a disappearing/flickering ship.

Re: Microsoft XBOX 360 Arcade Hardware ?
IMHO the current generation of consoles is FAR too unreliable to do arcade games on. Sony and Microsoft might be laughing all the way to the bank as people buy their 2nd and 3rd consoles (now being sold at profit, not loss) but the reliability issues are disgraceful. Beats coming up with a new console they'd have to sell at a loss tho, as far as their shareholders are concerned.
The previous was bad enough in an arcade environment, and while smoking bans and the like may have eased some of the situation they still get put through one hell of a lot of abuse, in tightly confined spaces, not something current console hardware is good at dealing with.
Designing a new custom board is expensive, PC HW is cheap, and generally easy to repair / replace parts on. Most games will be developed on PC anyway, it makes porting to the Xbox easier, and is a natural choice. Their only real concern with PC hardware is security, they no longer have to worry about emulators as such, because the stuff is already running native on PC, but they have to beef up security to the point where people can't just copy it straight off, as they have been doing with some Type X stuff, which will be fresh in their minds. The disadvantages of PC hw are obvious tho, and do inherit a lot of the reliability issues associated with current consoles, doing HDD based arcade games IMHO is suicide in terms of reliability, history has shown this, yet manufacturers persist with it.
As for SH3, I doubt the SH3 was the bottleneck in any of their SH3 based games, from what I gather they were hitting the limits of their video system.

Re: Microsoft XBOX 360 Arcade Hardware ?
But couldnt microsoft redesign the hardware for arcade use with better cooling , Maybe having seperate games on HDD which plug into a motherboard like a cartridge gameIseeThings wrote:IMHO the current generation of consoles is FAR too unreliable to do arcade games on. .
It Would also make 360 ports arcade perfect and easy so no messing around which would bring in console game sales quicker
Ill be interested to see what the new year brings ,

Well here it is , I never even knew this existed
Seems very good , But this could prove difficult for the home arcade user

That is ingenious, but also the death of classic arcade gaming.
