The game seems to be pretty obscure in online discussions, and I'm surprised that its not listed on the SNES portion of the site. Its more shmuppy then say, Contra III or Cybernator, so I'm wondering why it hasn't been included yet...
I have the first game, and I find it pretty enjoyable now and then. The melee attack is poorly worked in, and the sound effects sound like they were done on an 8-bit system! But a lot of fun nonetheless.

The SFC's "Pocky & Rock" is not the first in the series, it is the 2rd sequel, and "Pocky & Rocky 2" being the 3rd.
History:
Arcade KiKi KaiKai (included in Taito Memories Vol. 1)
PC Engine version (simliar to the arcade but with shorten/cut off screen)
Famicom Disc System KiKi KaiKai
SFC Pocky & Rock
SFC Pocky & Rock 2
GBA KiKi KaiKai
I thinks that's all of them.
I play the orginal KiKi KaiKai times and times.
Attacking with the close attack is riskly, but you have to use it when enemy got too close.
As it is even more riskly trying to shoot them upclose.
The close attack is much more useful in the GBA version, since it can clear enemies bullnets in that game.
BTW, I found shooting diagonally can cover a larger area than shooting vertically.
May be that is because all the hitboxes are square in sharp.

I actually own both of 'em; I haven't had the chance to play them much, but I'm glad to have them. The first one is slightly more "traditional," in that you have a stage to work through, stuff to pick up and shoot, a set number of hits, etc...the second P+R adds in a bunch of adventure/rpg elements, and some other odd features. For one thing, you always have a partner, who can never be permanently killed (even on 2P mode); this is because "throwing your partner" (and creating a big explosion) is vital for fighting bosses and such. Thus, the core gameplay changes quite a bit...not necessarily worse, but definitely different.
I play the first SFC one all the time, think it's a great game. With the two weapon types, melee attack and slide you really have a good number of options to approach the stages, all of which are nice graphically and sonically.
The second one though is just lazy IMO.
SAM: the melee attack can clear most bullets in the first SFC game too, useful for standing your ground while creating an opening.

It's not listed in the SNES section of the Xenocide Files because it's not a strict shmup. Therefore, topic moved.
These are two of my favorites on that system.
Natsume were kings of 2D action on the SNES. I wonder what happened to the people responsible for the SNES Kikikaikais, Wild Guns, Ninja Warriors Again, etc.
These are two of my favorites on that system.
