What game has the greatest and worst port this generation
So yeah what port this generation would you say is the best and worst as in
"Accuracy in comparison to the arcade pcb"
"Video Options"
"Menues."
"Extra modes"
"Leaderboard functionality"
"preorder bonus"
And what would you like to see in the future like more HD modes etc or something you want them to stop doing.
I myself want them to stop with the ridiculous archivements like Have a great run or whatever but then for some reason die and fuck it all up"
Why is shit like this a archivement...,,,

Greatest: Mushihimesama Futari
Worst: DoDonPachi DOJBL Extra
As for what I'd like to see, it'd be great if Cave would add in scanline options to their low-res ports along with bringing back original arcade modes. Futari looks incredible in Arcade with scanlines on my 640x480 CRT, and it's a shame I can't do the same with my other Cave games.

I second Futari for greatest. ESPII is also very good. I particularly like the ease of screen adjusting and the freedom that they give. Unlike the forced 4:3 in Akai Katana THAT IS ZOOMED IN TO FAR, THUS SUCKING BALLS.
Akai Katana is good overall, but fuck me, how is it that CAVE can make such brilliant games, and at the same time be so retarded?

BLEX is about as perfect a port of DOJ BL you could wish for. It's a fine release, and BL was all well and good even before the patch.
Surely Deathsmiles MBL with it's balked slowdown, and the same for Deathsmiles II post patch should be up there with the worst?

Doesn't futari still have some noticable inaccuracies in regards to slowdown? that and it still has that weird freeze for a second glitch for some people who got black label.

DS2 Arcade definitely takes gold for worst port, with no replays, no training mode, crashes and bugs before the patch, and slow-acting slowdown now (it takes multiple credits for the slowdown to fully sink in!), not to mention the resolution thing... it's an excellent game but that port is ugh
DFK gets a nod from me for best port with its excellent training mode, accuracy and Arrange modes, but I'm quite happy with all the ports I've played, other than DS2 Arcade!

I don't know about the best port, but Death Smiles 2 Arcade has to be in the running for the worst. This sums it up nicely:
The lack of training mode and downloadable replays is just awful. They should be standard features with every home port these days.Aliquantic wrote:DS2 Arcade definitely takes gold for worst port, with no replays, no training mode, crashes and bugs before the patch, and slow-acting slowdown now (it takes multiple credits for the slowdown to fully sink in!), not to mention the resolution thing... it's an excellent game but that port is ugh

I think that the MMP&PS pack has pretty horrible menus not to mention not separating 1.0 and 1.01 leaderboards.
Also I find that fact that they dropped the attract mode pretty sad,

I'd say Futari and RFA are about tied. M2 just does an amazing job with everything so I was very happy with Futari. RFA was a HUGE surprise to me when I picked it up, didn't expect Raiden games to get so much attention on the port along with what may be the best filters I've ever seen.

BLEX is awesome. If you don't have 60 seconds or less of patience, DOJ probably isn't the game for you in the first place. I prefer BLEX over DV. Just the aesthetics added, and the DFK-ish X-mode put it over the top. Plus it plays awesome.
I really don't have a worst. 1 I've never played any of the original games (save one of the RF games) so I have nothing to compare on. and 2, I haven't really been let down by any of the games. I guess if I had to choose I would go with DS2 (though X-Mode makes it well worth the purchase) I never really touched the arcade version and the arrange version sucked as well as the bonus game.

Didn't ddpdojblex's patch reduce the load times by 90% or something though?Casper<3 wrote:No.drunkninja24 wrote: Worst: DoDonPachi DOJBL Extra

Not 90% no (that would have been nice), but they are a little quicker. It really doesn't matter anyway, it's a fantastic port of BL and X-Mode is insanely fun to play for score.AntiFritz wrote:Didn't ddpdojblex's patch reduce the load times by 90% or something though?

Re: What game has the greatest and worst port this generation
And once the game *has* booted up, there won't be any loading unless you go back to the main menu, and it's actually faster than a lot of other ports after the initial startup... which is still a lot quicker than turning on the PCB too
Training mode is pretty weak though and doesn't even let you start at full power by default (you have to use the Start button for that instead of A), and even Ketsui's training had a few more options like starting with more lives/bombs. It's probably the biggest weakness of that port still, but that's where MAME steps in

Re: What game has the greatest and worst port this generation
i'm not one to gripe too much about perfect PCB accuracy, what with not being that deep into the games i play, but in terms of just being uninviting the menus and video settings for MMP+PS and Guwange on the 360 take the cake in my books. the menus themselves are a visual mess and can't manage themselves properly when zoomed in for 4:3 play, and as far as the Guwange ones are concerned, it's just submenu after submenu after submenu to do anything. you don't need an entirely new set of these menus for the different variations of the game, either, just dump it all into a single menu!
playing PS1+PS2 games it's a simple change from yoko to tate, why do i have to fumble with these games (89 degrees, 91 degrees, goddammit, just land on 90!) the way i do? just give us the basic settings and a 16:9 option as well that just adds extra crap to the sides of the screen.

I'm with you there, and was fairly disappointed with a lot of aspects of both of these ports, but I have to say I really like the MMP/PS frontend in conceptrenardqueenston wrote:i'm not one to gripe too much about perfect PCB accuracy, what with not being that deep into the games i play, but in terms of just being uninviting the menus and video settings for MMP+PS and Guwange on the 360 take the cake in my books.

Cave really just needs to give all their games to M2 for their port jobs. I really don't know what they've been thinking lately with the horrendous oversights or straight up laziness with screen options in particular. They know what their customers want and expect, why stop delivering? (right, right, I know. It's because we'll buy anything they release anyway.)

+1. In the case of Guwange we had to wait forever for the patch, so by then I had lost all interest in the game. And the "no, forget getting to set the video globally for all game modes, you fucker" attitude of MMP/PS is just asinine.renardqueenston wrote:i'm not one to gripe too much about perfect PCB accuracy, what with not being that deep into the games i play, but in terms of just being uninviting the menus and video settings for MMP+PS and Guwange on the 360 take the cake in my books.
I guess you can say that the DOJ BLEX is both the greatest and worst port. I always get a positive surprise of how fucking great X Mode is.

Ikaruga's XBLA port loses a lot of points for being the hackjob with modified mechanics that it is. Guwange's port was a little irritating, but there are far worse interfaces. You know, like Gran Turismo 5 *Vomit*. I haven't played much else, so I can't really comment.
Why is it called the Vic Viper/Warp Rattler? Because the Options trail behind it in a serpent-like fashion, and the iconic front fins are designed to invoke the image of a snake's fangs.

Re: What game has the greatest and worst port this generation
Well, that's probably the X360's biggest weakness. There's no actual native 2D surface - all 2D graphics in a 360 game is drawn as a flat 3D texture using shaders, while the resolution itself is controlled by the Xbox, and, as far as I know, this cannot be overridden by the game.renardqueenston wrote: playing PS1+PS2 games it's a simple change from yoko to tate, why do i have to fumble with these games (89 degrees, 91 degrees, goddammit, just land on 90!) the way i do? just give us the basic settings and a 16:9 option as well that just adds extra crap to the sides of the screen.
So you have to see where Cave are coming from. They won't know exactly what resolution the console is running, and they can't tell how much overscan is on the TV it is connected to (in arcades operators can work the monitor to fit the game - not so easy on home TVs), and in order to display pixel perfect graphics, the game has to be displayed without texture filters in a resolution that is X times bigger than the original resolution (X being an integer) This is only further complicated by the fact that most of the arcade hardware Cave's games are made for don't use 1:1 pixels, which all the supported X360 resolutions are (- and if you are playing on an LCD TV, that too only supports 1:1 pixels)
In summary, it's much easier making pixel perfect 2D graphics on a game created for the X360 than one ported to it (eg. the high-res graphics in DeathSmiles look smooth and fine). That said, it's definitely not impossible.

Re: What game has the greatest and worst port this generation
Futari has perfect pixel scales, the DbD stuff or what it is called.
Also I think all but the PGM hardware is 1:1 pixels. 240x320 in 3:4. Exception would be Progear.
And the PGM stuff also is 1:2 which is super easy to scale with even numbers.

Re: What game has the greatest and worst port this generation
Cave's PGM games are 224x448, I believe. So yeah, it would require scaling a 1:2 display to 3:4.
So you'd have to scale it by 3:2 to get it pixel perfect - ie. 672 x 896. That's possible on a 1080p display, but you'd have massive borders.
Best solution is of course setting the resolution to 720p and tate the monitor, but with yoko you're bound to get either skewed pixels or a tiny image.

Yes, there will be borders, of course. Also you could do 1344x896 on 1080p, still some borders but not that huge.
