Can you power a Hikaru from a Capcom I/O?

Post by panzeroceania »

Can you power a Hikaru Motherboard from a Capcom I/O with Jamma power supply?

I currently live in the United States, and have a Hikaru Board plugged into a Capcom I/O, which is plugged into a Vega Jr. Supergun, which is plugged into my US Powered wall socket.

The video and audio are run straight from the Hikaru into my TV

I noticed that it ran my Naomi 1 just fine, but when I tried the Hikaru, I could hear it power on, and the fan kick in, but I wasn't getting a picture?

is it possible I have it on a video mode other than 31khz?

I know with my Naomi 1 board the dip switch was to 15khz RGB so I had to switch that, but where is the DIP switch on the Hikaru?

Any help would be appreciated.

Even if it was the picture that was off, I should still be able to hear the game power on if I have the audio plugged in right?

I'm not sure about a Capcom I/O adequately powering a Hikaru, but I can tell you there is no external dip switch for display resolution. You need to boot into the operator menu to change the display settings, for which there are only three options: 31khz, 24khz, and Autoscan. Hikaru does not support 15khz. Depending upon what it was last set at, or what game this is, it could be set to 24khz, so you'll need a multi-sync arcade monitor to tell for sure.

There is no startup sound like the Naomi. And chances are you are booting up to an error message, like an invalid cabinet type assignment, or attempting a network connection for linked cabinets. The only way to try resolving these problems are through the operator menus, so getting the display working is job #1.

So which Hikaru game is this?

Star Wars (Pod) Racer

I know I don't have the proper controls yet but I'm just trying to get it to boot so far.

I've been told I need to use a JVS power supply. I have one but I have no way to plug it in as I don't have a cab. I need to try to order some cab-end power cables from Craig if he has any.

As for a multisync monitor. It'd be nice to have a good japanese multisync monitor but they're expensive. I know a guy in California that sells sony monitors, they aren't arcade but they are supposed to be quality and multisync.

I'm broke right now though so I probably won't be able to get the monitor for a little bit.

Thanks for the info.

If I'm lucky when I get the right power supply, it might be on 31khz.

Does anyone know what the default resolution is for Star Wars Racer?

Hi there,

Sorry to bump an old topic, i'm just wondering how difficult it would be to set up a Hikaru board on an Astro City.

I'd really like to play my Planet Harriers in the Astro, and I have a Naomi analogue control panel and stick. Also the monitor is capable of displaying 24hz display.

Any help on how to go about this set up would be very much appreciated! :D

I was trying to do something similar with my planet harriers mobo, but don't have a complete analog panel...just a single joystick and no analog cable.

What you need to do is boot up the mobo on a VGA monitor and change the default 31khz to 24khz. Save and shutdown. Then to hookup to the astro you need a standard sega jvs to jamma I/O board, sega sun power supply, and analog cable for the control panel joysticks.

One thing I noticed, is that the zoom buttons map to the jamma joystick up and down switches (or something like that). Shot and bomb mapped to A and Bbuttons.

I really want to try playing this with short analog panel sticks, as the regular analog flight sticks have such a long throw and are very tiring after stage 3.

Let me know if you get this working on your astro.

I've got PH running on my supergun setup which is probably very similar. You'll need an additional JVS PSU as the Astro PSU is just too weak to power the Hikaru. Aside from that, you'll just need to wire up the controls correctly to the Sega I/O board. Also, as Dave said, since the Astro doesn't do 31kHz, you'll need to set it to 24kHz but I haven't tried if PH will boot up with that setting (some games will only boot in 31).

Many thanks for your replies Dave_K and Shou, much appreciated. If I manage to get this up and running in a cab I'll let you know and post some pics.

Cheers,

Its been a long time coming, but I've finally got this up and running. :D

Image

In the end it made more sense to set it up in my Naomi (JVS wiring, 31KHz monitor, more space).

I've put more pics on my blog:

Awesome. The game really is incredible. I wish SEGA would bring it home with 16:9 support, won't be the same without the flight stick, tho.

I don't have a cab, but one day I hope to consolize my Planet Harriers setup. It sure is messy. ;_;

If I ever get a capture set up I'll be sure to post videos.
