MAME appreciation thread

Post by jepjepjep »

Since I've noticed that we have some MAME developers and contributors on this board, I wanted to make a thread where we can express our thoughts and gratitude. While MAME is not perfect and there are often some grievances, overall MAME is a great thing for our community.

Personally, I think there's nothing better than a real arcade PCB, but MAME is a fantastic tool that makes trying out new games before deciding to drop a big chunk of money possible. It also allows us to practice certain parts of a game easily and conveniently, as well as giving us the possiblity of trying out some rare games that would otherwise be simply out of reach.

So, for those who helped create, maintain, and improve MAME, as well as those who have contributed by dumping roms, a sincere thank you :!:

I hate PCs, thus I do not like MAME. I also do not like consoles. The uprights just settle different attitude - they give an unique atmosphere.
Still, for a player who has difficulties in obtaining an arcade machine, MAME is the only choice. It is better than nothing.

MAME has given me the ability to play, appreciate and enjoy literally hundreds of games which would otherwise have been unavailable to me.
Configuring MAME has given me a very good introduction to emulation and the specifics of arcade firmware and their translation into a PC environment.
I also like the way that the MAME devs (despite some disagreements) have a clear and intelligent underlying philosophy which guides their work.
Finally it is exciting that MAME is a dynamic and evolving project with more and more previously-inaccessible games becoming playable with each successive release.
Thankyou MAME devs and hats off to MAME :D :D :D :D

I used MAME back when it was DOS only and Roadblasters was the newest thing added to it. I ran it on a Pentium II 300 MHz. Woohoo MAME :D

For nearly a decade MAME has provided me with a way to play many games that I otherwise wouldn't have even known about.

I remember when rumors were flying that they might add Pole Position in the next release, and it needed like a P166 to play Pac-Man (I had a 486 at the time so I had to be content with Callus :))

I would probably never have loved shmups as much as I have these past few years if not for MAME. While I got into this hobby mainly through Touhou and Kenta Cho, it wasn't until MAME that I really understood how many high quality games I'd been missing all these years. You guys are the best!

I've used Mame, Mame32, and shmupmame for fun and to try some arcade roms out to see if they worth getting in their original arcade PCB incarnation. Some games played through emulation do bring back some cool memories of what it was like to play at a real arcade hangout back in the early 1980s and into the early 1990s. Back in early 2000, there was the huge single site of emux.com that had all the major emulator programs + roms in one place before it got disbanded and such stuff was scattered across the internet.

This isn't the MAME opinions thread. This is about thanking people for putting in a lot of time and work for no pay at all for the general benefit of game nerds.

Hey MAME dudes, thanks for helping me to find the cool obscure titles, revive my Capcom and SEGA boards, and for something to play on my laptop in hotel rooms. You guys rock!
