This ,

I only played my cabs once last week and spend most of my gaming time playing Crisys 2 on the 360.
Same, I have not powered my cab up for nearly 3 weeks now and have been mainly gaming on my 360 (non-shmup).

I love my shmups more than anything and have done since the early 80's but I couldn't play them all the time. I go through phases tbh. Same with my spare cash spending habits; I'll spend a month or two buying games/boards and then the next month I might buy football tickets/albums or whatever.

Gaming is my No: 1 hobby but life is too short to spend it all in front of a screen in much the same way I couldn't spend all my gaming time with just one genre.

I play shmups all the time and try to get high scores and I never get tired of it. Well, actually... for me it really depends on which game I'm playing. There are some shmups that don't keep you going at it, and you either get bored or annoyed with it. Yet on the other hand, there are some that keep you addicted and actually make you want to beat the game. I enjoy good old non-bullet hell shmups on the Turbo Duo/SNES/Genesis. I take a break from playing shmups by trying another genre like an RPG.
Didactically speaking, seminal evidence seems to explicate the fact that your repudiation of entropy supports my theory of space-time synthesis. Of this, I am irrefutably confident

I have been playing alot of RPGs lately also like Ys I, II, III (More of a action type RPG that is alot of fun) and Final Fantasy 1 & 2. But i still play shmups when i get bored of those games. I normally have certain days when i just want to play all shmups.

I never get burned out, but this is most likely because I can't/won't play more than 2 or 3 credits per day. This does not apply to new titles though  . I will of course play more credits on them, just to become aquainted.

This, right here 8) Anyway, if it something ceases to be fun, then I just stop doing it and move on to something else.

Sometimes, if I'm burned out of STG's I go back to IIDX/BMS and vice versa. I guess I did play them a lot more between 2004-2007, big decline once I started IIDX in late 2008.

My interest in a type of game is strongly connected to how lively the community is, within Australia, both genres are quite dead as far as Melbourne is concerned, we had some STG players a few years back but there was a language barrier. I guess had it not been for this forum and cave-stg I would have totally lost interest in the genre.

If I get as far as I can on a STG I give up. About 3 years later I will revisit it. Apart from that merry go round I just play new STG's.

I was astonished by the things I have learned from this topic! My understanding of the members of the forum was changed drasticaly by that information.
I play videogames in those cases: fasting; tobacco usage; continence; and/or taking the nutmeg extract. Otherwise I am permanently burned out with the STG genre. Only arcade games - not those "drunk" games like RPGs. And even when I am drunk I will not play most of the "drunk" stuff. Mero has called these "mainstream current gen games", and has added that he "wouldn't touch that kind of stuff with a bargepole".
I know that there are people who play shmups for other reasons, but still these members play only arcade games, and most prefferably - software for uprights. I do not blame those members, which play both shmups and drunk games, just it seems very strange to me. For example, there are people, who play both STGs and pinballs - I understand that, despite that I appreciate pinballs only because of continence or of the nutmeg extract.

But recently, my interest in them has started to wane. I don't feel the same need to beat the final bosses of Mushihime and Ketsui, or to play them at all. How many of you have experienced periods like this? For how long did they last before your interest was renewed? It is my hope that mine will come back, but for the time being, I'm just not feelin' it.
I just find it astonishing and sad that the same games which were the central source of my recreational enjoyment for years now bore the shit out of me. I hope this isn't permanent...I miss that rush.
I got bored of shmups after i played really a lot xD....but for me that is normal...I can play other genres like fighting games or others...then I can play again my classics shmups like snes shmups, nes shmups, ps1, ps2, dreamcast, saturn, arcade, pc....

today i was playing again Darius Force and Super R-type !!
thanks emulators xD

From time to time it occasionally happens, that I don't play any shmups for some weeks. Then I get back to them and I'm in love again.

Just happened to me with Batsugun, which was the first shmup after a longer hiatus. Plug and play and love all day.

It really baffles me how you don't lose any of your skill aswell. I'm expecting it every time and get a pleasant surprise.

I won't stop with this genre. Ever.

My shooting mojo is back and bigger than ever. Playing other genres for a while really helped rekindle my interest. At the rate I'm going now, I should be able to 1CC at least six more shooters this year (Soukyuugurentai looks like it's next). But I'm in no rush. The longer each experience, the better.

This past 1/2 year before STGT, I rarely played shmups just because I'd felt as though I had experienced everything worth mentioning after 5 or so years. Now that STGT is here and its my first time competing, I finally have some motivation to get into playing them once again. Now that I'm playing for a month with a team of people against a whole ton of other well-known competitors, I'm back :p

I get burned out on occasion. But lately I don't play as seriously as I used to, or with the same level of intensity, and I find I play better that way, as I have less frustration overall, and my goals aren't set as high as I would normally have them.

Took me (on and off) about 4 years to clear the first mushihime on maniac. Now I have been working on futari Maniac for 3 years.

When I did 1cc Maniac, it was on a cab at a convention. I went nuts when I did it. The guy next to me had no idea why I was jumping up and down.

Yes I get burned out and pissed. The good thing about arcade sticks is that I don't have the desire to throw it.
There is a nice bunch of dents in my wall from gamepads though.

I'll get burned out with the 1cc attempts and just start credit feeding.

Kind of like playing a musical piece. Learn it in sections, then try to play it all at once.

I probably should prevent myself from trying sections further on just because I messed up the notes the first time through a section of a musical piece? However, I don't always have to restart the musical piece from the very beginning. Same goes for credit feeding in a shumup--I'll try that section again and again, when I get it right is when I get past that section, but I don't always have to start from the beginning of the game each time. Jumping ahead to another section of a musical piece when a previous section isn't quite learned yet--the shmup equivalent is using a cheat code such as stage select.

However, I can't say I can play the musical piece entirely until I play the piece from start to finish without errors. Similarly, I can't say I've beaten the shmup until I can 1cc it (or 1cc the first loop if the game has multiple loops).

If I find myself not doing well on shmups on a given day because I'm trying too hard, then I'll change to fighting games, racing games, sports games, or puzzle games for the remainder of the gaming session that day. There's always tomorrow to play shmups again.
