Question about Transcoders YPbPr>VGA YPbPr>RGBS & Vice Versa
What are the best Transcoders for
YPbPr --> VGA/RGBHV/31khz RGB
YPbPr --> RGBS/15khz RGB
VGA --> YPbPr
RGBS --> YPbPr
For Systems like the Gamecube and Wii, you have to get the Pal version to output RGB, and that's fine for 15khz non-progressive games. but for Progressive Scan games I'd like to get the full VGA/RGBHV/31khz experience.
both systems have cables that output YPbPr, so I was wondering what Transcoder would be best to convert YPbPr to VGA.
There is also the Colecovision. The Colecovision can be modded to output component video (YPbPr as far as I know) but it's a low res signal.
Is there a Transcoder out there that could take that Colecovision Component signal and transcode it to a 15khz RGBS signal to display on my 15khz RGB monitor?
any info on any and all transcoders would be very helpful.

RGB (Scart) to YUV: easily to be found on eBay ($40). Quality's ok. Some cheaper units might show a tiny bit of red bleeding. Reference would be the Micomsoft XSelect-D4, but it's expensive, hard to find and uses J-Scart.
YUV (progressive) to VGA: cheap and good to be found with the Lenkeng PSP Scaler LKV7000. My reference is the Burosch Con-1 (extremely hard to find). Very good are those transcoders available at Curtpalme.com for about $120-160.
YUV (15khz) to RGB Scart: rarely seen. The Hama Video Converter 2-3 should do this.
VGA to YUV (progressive): Kramer FC-14 (reference) or the ones available at Curtpalme.com.
In other words: Scart to YUV and YUV to VGA are pretty easy and cheap to find. YUV to Scart is rare, but not impossible. VGA to YUV hardly used nowadays, so it's a bit pricey...
And (drumrolls....) the Burosch Con-2 should actually do all four kinds of conversions, but it's so damn rare that I haven't succeeded in finding one over the past 5 years. The XSelect-D4 also does VGA to YUVp, YUVp to VGA, RGBs to YUVi and in theory also YUVi to RGBs, but it uses D-Terminal for it's YUV output.

Thanks Fudoh,
I live in the United States but use primarily Japanese hardware so I prefer J-SCART.
I think I can get my hands on an XSelect-D4 so that's good news. I'll keep my eyes open for the Burosch Con series. Thanks again for the info.

Re: Question about Transcoders YPbPr>VGA YPbPr>RGBS & Vice Versa
Every RGB SCART to YUV adapter I've seen seems to be video only. I've found this but it doesn't even mention RGB anywhere so I'm suspicious of it. Can anyone point me to a SCART RGB to YUV box that also outputs audio?
Re: Question about Transcoders YPbPr>VGA YPbPr>RGBS & Vice Versa
you don't make very much sense. There is no such thing as a RGB Scart to YUV adapter. Adapters in general are used to trasmit a signal from one type of connector to another. Adapters don't convert anything. The cable you've linked is used for machines that output COMPONENT (YUV) through scart.Every RGB SCART to YUV adapter I've seen seems to be video only. there is none. You have to built a Scart breakout scable to accomplish this.Can anyone point me to a SCART RGB to YUV box that also outputs audio?

I apologise for the sloppy terminology, I was aware of the distinction in function but not in name, and meant converter, not adapter. Thanks for clarifying.Fudoh wrote:Adapters in general are used to trasmit a signal from one type of connector to another. Adapters don't convert anything. BTW, there are a bunch of CON-2 auctions at eBay right now.

thanks for the hint, haven't received the eBay alert mail yet....BTW, there are a bunch of CON-2 auctions at eBay right now.
PS: If you're in the market for a Scart to RCA/Cinch breakout cable for RGB you have to pay attention to the signal direction. Scart to Cinch is different as Cinch to Scart. This past week I talked to a guy who had lots of troubles and even his custom made cable had the wrong pin configuration.

Re: Question about Transcoders YPbPr>VGA YPbPr>RGBS & Vice Versa
It would be correct to assume that something like the XRGB-2, XRGB-2Plus, XRGB-3, iScan VP50, or DVDO Edge would be the best for
RGBs 15khz --> RGBHV 31khz
correct?
RGBs 15khz --> RGBHV 31khz
correct?
Re: Question about Transcoders YPbPr>VGA YPbPr>RGBS & Vice Versa
Something like those, yes.
It very much depends on your sources though, your games in particular, also your display and last your preferences. The Edge for example does not have a VGA output and the VP50 as another example can't handle 240p input.

I thought as much, as of now I already have an XRGB-3, I've only had it for a few weeks. I also just won an auction on an XSELECT-D4 so I'm happy about that.
I have been in the hobby of RGB, Jamma and JVS boards, superguns, and console gaming for awhile and love my supergrafx with Super CD-ROM 2 but am fairly new in the world of transcoders and upscan converters.
I read your website extensively probably about a year ago and then again about 6 months ago but only started getting the hardware in the last month or so.
