Is there a difference between the two besides the name?

Yes, the power up system is a bit different.

In Life Force, you choose the power up you want at the power up's menu by collecting a certain number of power up capsule.

In Salamander, different power up just appear after you defeat a certain the enemies, and you just pick them up.

Parodius uses the Gradius/Life Force's power up system.
*Meow* I am as serious as a cat could possible be. *Meow*

Actually, the US arcade Life Force uses the same icon based power up system as the Japanese Salamander. The Japanese Life Force is the only arcade version with the Gradius power up bar. The MSX Salamander uses a Gradius style power up bar and has seperate power ups unique to that game. The NES Salamander/Life Force uses the Gradius power up bar.

The US Life Force isn't the same as the Japanese Salamander despite using the same power up system. Some new voices were added and, from what I heard, the mechanical stages were made organic.

That all depends on which Life Force you're talking about. See this thread.

That is correct...set'em straight!

How about "Noc tsu cow, the white warrior" or how ever you spell it. Heh heh.
