Shmups top list...?

Post by louisg »

What happened to the top shmups of all time poll? Is that not happening this year? I'd almost run it if nobody else wants to...

I think it would be a useful reference if the most current one were stickied.

I think the most recent results thread is here, there are links to related topics in the first post.

I'll ask around and see if anything's brewing...

People got tired of the fanboy circlejerking, so we've all decided to put it on hiatus.
Of course, that's just an opinion.

Cave should be excluded, that would at least make for an interesting list.

I found it interesting in that I knew nothing about the genre coming in, so the "Top 25" essentially gave me a shortlist of games to check out.

Very useful for newbies, imo.

The lists do seem to be a bit Cave-heavy, although the top game last year was from Raizing :D :!:

Yeah, last year only 2 cave games were in the top 5.

I'd like to see a list where people have to choose their favorite shmups from different eras and systems (e.g., arcade vs. console/computer, 80s vs. 90s vs. 2000s). That might change things up. Of course, then it wouldn't be a flat "best of all time" list.. but it'd be interesting to see how that changes things.

I'd like to see a year where we stop complaining about CAVE in all areas of the forum.

If we had a top horizontals of all time poll, it'd probably be more like 4.

I love lists. Love to read the lists of others and to think about my own. I really hope we manage to continue the tradition!

Me too. I've never actually contributed to the all-time lists because I've never felt qualified to do so, but I sure enjoy reading about the opinions of others who've invested a lot of time into these games.

Same here. Reading other peoples' votes is actually more fun than the final list. Bring it on. This year, there might actually be some minor changes to my own list, I think.

Hmm.. Maybe it's related to those two companies making some of the best shoot'em ups of all time.

I didn't know Dimahoo was one of the best shmups of all time. It's a fun game, but it's not anywhere near being one of the best. Best Raizing, yes, but near the best shmups overall, no.

You are the first person to mention Dimahoo in this thread, also Dimahoo received 50th place on the last list. Second, even if Dimahoo placed extremely high how does your opinion invalidate a list whose goal is to rank shmups by popular vote?

If you think that Raizing didn't make good STGs, I wish you would actually support your claim instead of just saying "no".

Bring the Top 25 back and I promise I will not put a single Cave game on my list.

I'm curious as to why you think cave hasn't made a single game that is deserving of the being on the list.

If a simple question offends you I have no idea why you are on a message board. Why share opinions if you are afraid to explain them?

You want me to justify why I didn't put something on my personal, hypothetical, currently non-existent list? How about I just keep you in suspense until I actually put up a list. I'm not going to have any Treasure shmups or anything from the Darius or R-Type series' either, if that will make you outraged and indignant too. (EDIT: well ... maybe R-Type Leo, depending on how angry that makes R-Type fans)

Drum wrote: You want me to justify why I didn't put something on my personal, hypothetical, currently non-existent list?
YES! You see the importance of what is not in a list is just as great as what is included. Also the fact that it is hypothetical and non-existent doesn't matter, it's immaterial if you have written the list down or not, you've already stated an element of your list that strikes me as peculiar, so I asked a question about it, and as far as hypothetical goes I'm not interested in the parts of your list that you haven't made up your mind about yet. You stated for a fact you wouldn't include Cave games so that's what I'm asking about.

Let me explain to you why this is normal for me to question you. Cave is the most active and most successful modern STG developer, and by and large every shooting game they release is critically acclaimed and most people who are very interested in STGs (the people on this forum) also take interest in Cave's works as shown by all of the top 25 lists. You posted something that is contrary to the overwhelming majority of the people who love STGs, so I am curious as to why your tastes differ so greatly from mine and others when we seemingly share a common interest in a genre. Why is that strange?

It's as if you said in a top 25 FPS list that you wouldn't include anything from ID software, and you won't tell why. Well it's cool that you have an opinion, but why did you share it? Just to act cool that you don't follow the group? You're acting like a child in this thread, you want to be different for the sake of being different.

Drum's top 25 list can include whatever games he wants, but the board at large should be able to vote democratically. If he insists on speaking for the whole board, it's fair that we should refer to him as Dear Leader and remove all mentions of the Great Satan from his glorious presence.

I might even be willing to handle voting algorithms if people refuse to cooperate.
